59 TIMES THE PAIN: [2001] Calling The Public

This Swedish quartet have established themselves as one of the hardest rocking punk bands around. In a scene mostly divided between speedy hardcore and melodic punk, 59 Times the Pain have taken a unique stance, creating a sound that's straight-ahead punk rock, but with strong melodies packing plenty of punch. The group's influences are an intriguing mix of late-'70s/early-'80s N.Y. hardcore, the Clash, and the tougher new schoolers like Rancid, Pennywise, et al. But even when they're wearing their influences on their sleeves, the group retain a distinctive sound all their own. The driving "Class Action," for instance, borrows liberally from the Clash's "Capitol Radio," but boasting a fuller sound and vocals that owe nothing to the Brits. Elsewhere they marry NY hardcore to Clashesque harmonies, and at one point even merge the Stooges with the Misfits.

trACks:  ROCK THE CITY / CLASSACTION / CALLING THE PUBLIC / WELCOME TO THE 25TH CENTURY / FREEDOM STATION / CASH ON DELIVERY / ROOM WITH A VIEW / DEAD ON A DAY LIKE THIS / UPGRADED SYSTEM / MY LIFE MY CHOICE MY CALL / ADDICTED / THE EMERGENCY.

THE DIRTYS: [1997] You Should Be Sinnin' [by request]

59 TIMES THE PAIN: [1999] End Of The Milenium

End of the Millennium consolidates the crushing strengths of Swedish hardcore punk revivalists 59 Times the Pain's debut, displaying a musical attack that proves the band worthy of naming itself after a Husker Du song. While the criticisms might be leveled that the band doesn't really offer anything new and often falls prey to writing hookless chants instead of melodies, their appeal to punk hardliners is without question, and their intensity often rivals that of Black Flag (albeit without Greg Ginn's atonal jazz influences). Still, a few more memorable choruses would provide a significant listenability upgrade. -- Steve Huey

trACks: WORKING MAN HERO / ME AGAINST THE WORLD / TURN AT 25TH / PRIORITY 1 / NEED NO ALIBI / WEAKEND REVOLUTION / FOUND HOME / BROKEN UNITY / GOT IT ALL IN SIGHT / MAKE IT GO AWAY / DAILY MIND DISTORTION / CLEAR ENOUGH / PUNKROCK COLLEGE (ON WITH THE SHOW).

ALL: [2000] Problematic

Can a band make the same album a dozen times and still be great? One wouldn't think so if one had never heard All or its predecessor and alter ego, the Descendents. Yet it doesn't matter. Not a lick. Problematic, like 1998's Mass Nerder, and the Descendents' 1996 comeback, Everything Sucks, is superb. Imagine your favorite meal in your favorite restaurant, year after year, and it's like this band's repeatable, steady formula. With each successive repetition, All seems to get even better. Chad Price, the third of the band's singers, proves again he's the best of the lot, with a real edge to match a sincerity not far removed from his incredible Descendents counterpart, Milo Aukerman. And the two deliberately stupid tracks like "She Broke My Dick" and "I Want Out" aside (a feature since 1981's "I Like Food"), each song chugs with urgency and supreme melody, and benefits from a band where all four members write, and write so effectively. As well, with their own Blasting Room studio in Fort Collins, CO, All's "blasting" sound just seems to become clearer as it cranks. Moreover, few bands express primal relationship angst better. The terrific "Carry You," "Teresa," and "www.sara" are the spiked soul-searchers one still delights in, that mix of heartburn and power guitars that the Buzzcocks all but trademarked circa 1977.

trACKs: CARRY YOU / SHE BROKE MY DICK / BETTER THAN THAT / WWW SARA / ROIR / WHAT ARE YOU FOR / STUPID KIND OF LOVE / ALIVE / REAL PEOPLE / LOCK 'EM AWAY / TERESA / I WANT OUT / CRUCIFICTION / THE SKIN / NOTHIN' TO LIVE FOR / NEVER TOOK / MAKE BELIEVE / DRIVE AWAY.

JEFF DAHL: [1994] Leather Frankenstein [by request]

Are you ready to listen to an album by an eclectic pop artist named Jeff Dahl? It's a shame more people weren't, as there is plenty of fine music on this release. The albums opens with the crunching title track, but after that things get eclectic, with Dahl veering into pop and jazz territory. "Only Lovers Left Alive" is a fine alternative pop tune with inspired violin work by Robert Brock. Brock also adds weepy piano to "I Think I Lost My Mind," which sounds almost like a particularly good Mott the Hoople outtake. There is some aggressive punk in here, too, like "European Vacation" and "Marianne" (which is dedicated to Ms. Faithful), and "?Hot Rods To Hell?." On the whole Leather Frankenstein is an impressive and daring album, one that may have alienated some of the hardcore exclusives in the audience, but delighted those who didn't try to straightjacket their heroes into just one style of music. by Richard Foss

trACks: Leather Frankenstein / Can't Keep From Crying / Surf TV / Only Lovers Left Alive / Stars and Morons / European Vacation / Dead Heroes / Marianne / Hotrods to Hell / I Think I Lost My Mind / Waitin' For You.

59 TIMES THE PAIN: [1995] More Out Of Today

Named in honor of the Hüsker Dü classic, Swedish hardcore band 59 Times the Pain consisted of singer/guitarist Magnus, guitarist Kai, bassist Micke, and drummer Toni. Debuting with Blind Anger and Hate, the group resurfaced in 1997 with Twenty Percent of My Hand; End of the Millennium, 59 Times the Pain's first album for new label Epitaph, followed two years later.

trACks: STAY / MORE OUT OF TODAY / SOMETHING YOU'RE NOT / LEADERS & FOLLOWERS / GOTTA BE READY / SO BLIND / AS THINGS WERE BEFORE / WHEN IT ALL ALL COMES DOWN / ONE AFTER ANOTHER / TO ME YOU'RE DEAD / IS THIS IT? / ALL YOU GOT / WE'RE IN, NOW WHAT? / 2MIN REMAINING IN THE 3RD / FOR NOW / TIME TO CHILL.

ALL: [1998] Mass Nerder

The times change, but All stays the same. Ten years into their career, the descendents of the Descendents are keeping true to their post-hardcore punk roots, turning out an album that sounds a lot like all their other records. On the surface, Mass Nerder sounds like all their other records, and there isn't much underneath the surface, either -- it's just straight-ahead, loud, reasonably catchy hardcore punk.

trACks: WORLD'S ON HEROIN / I'LL GET THERE / LIFE ON THE ROAD / FAIRWEATHER FRIEND / PERFECTION / GREEDY / UNTIL I SAY SO / THINK THE WORLD / HONEY PEEPS / REFRAIN / SILLY ME / ROMANTIC JUNKIE / VIDA BLUE / UNTIL THEN / GOOD AS MY WORD / SILENCE.

VA: [1997] Tokyo Trashville!

Offering a slightly exotic twist on the crude butt-kickin' mayhem that garage punk fans love, this compilation documents an underground scene that began with occasional "Back from the Grave" nights at a club in Tokyo's red-light district. At first people just drank and listened to their favorite records; then they formed bands, performed themselves, and unleashed this music on the rest of the world. This album provides an overview of this scene, starting at full throttle with Supersnazz pushing the spirit of the Pebbles compilations into the 1990s. Another highlight is hearing the 5.6.7.8's barrel through "Ki-Kiya Shout" with the off-kilter enthusiasm of a band just learning how to play its instruments. Elsewhere on this album, Guitar Wolf steamrolls through the heavy guitar rock of "Kung Fu Ramone"; Teengenerate shows their '70s punk roots with "Johnny and Dee Dee"; Jackie & the Cedrics and Mad 3 indicate they've been listening to Dick Dale and the Ventures; and the remaining bands evoke the spirit (if not quite the quality) of the Stooges, MC5, Radio Birdman, and the great rockabilly artists. Tokyo Trashville isn't consistently brilliant, and it certainly doesn't feature lush production or pristine performances, but it's definitely a lot of fun.

trACks: YEAR 1 (SUPERSNAZZ) / CHOCOLATE (MUDDY FRANKENSTEIN) / HE'S WAITIN' (GUINNY VAMPS) / JOHNNY & DEE DEE (TEENGENERATE) / KUNG FU RAMONE (GUITAR WOLF) / PHOTOGRAPHER (TEXACO LEATHERMAN) / MOTORBIKIN' SHAKE (MUTANT MONSTER BEACH PARTY) / LET'S DANCE (GREAT MONGOOSE) / SQUAD CAR (JACKIE & THE CEDRICS) / KI-KYA SHOUT (5.6.7.8'S) / ALI BABA (MAD 3).

McManus, vocals and lyrics, Eric Squadroni, lead guitar, Mark Pingitore, bass, Dan McGinnis, rhythm guitar, and Bruce Boyd, drums. F-MINUS: [2001] Suburban Blight [Hellcat]

SoCal punks F-Minus comprised singer/guitarist Brad Logan, guitarist Sarah Lee, bassist Jennifer Johnson, and drummer Chris Lagerborg. The group debuted in 1998 with a pair of 7" EPs -- the Hellcat release Failed Society and Pelado Records' Won't Bleed Me -- featuring 19 songs spread between them. Next entering the studio with producer Tim Armstrong of Rancid, F-Minus -- swapping Lee for guitarist Erica Daking and Lagerborg for drummer John Guerra -- released their self-titled full-length debut in the fall of 1999. Suburban Blight followed two years later. Shifts inside the band continued. Bass player Joe Steinbrick and drummer Adam Zuckert solidified F-Minus' lineup by 2002, allowing the band to finally head into the studio for a third album. F-Minus joined producer Steve Albini for the anxious Wake Up Screaming, which appeared on Epitaph in March 2003.

F-MINUS: [1999] F-Minus [Hellcat]

F-Minus' self-titled debut album harks back to the old school of early '80s California hardcore, as brief songs rocket past in a blur of speed. While the group does have a distinctly '90s sensibility, its raw production gives the music a bite that often gets ironed out of many '90s punk releases. Some songs don't quite hit the mark, but they're surrounded by enough good ones that it isn't quite as noticeable.

trACks: SLAVE LABOR / I.H.G.I. / NOTHING EVER / WE'RE ALL DEADMEN / HOSTAGE / BETTER TO DIE / PARTY'S OVER / TOMORROW BURNS / DISFIGURED / BRAVE NEW WARRIORS / DROPOUTS / SOMEONE'S DREAM / DRAGON'S TEETH / IDOLS / CLASS MACHINE / SPIT AT THE TRUTH / I'M SO EMPTY / YOU OWE ME / RUINED / PEER PRESSURE.

MIDNIGHT THUNDER EXPRESS: [2002] Midnight Thunder Express

The Midnight Thunder Express have exploded like a runaway freight train leaping off the tracks. This hard working five piece came out of the gates running, forming mere months ago from the ashes of Seattle stalwarts the Valentine Killers and other less notables. Twin guitar madness courtesy of Stu Miller's Chuck Berry rhythm style mixing perfectly with Brian's scorching leads, a one two punch indeed. This while Willie sings about dirty women, good times had, and those unshakeable blues. The solid bottom end is the glue that holds the Express together, Scott's masterful bass lines falling right in place with Jimmy Flame's heavy hitting drum style.
trACks: ACE UP MY SLEEVE / DRIVIN' RIGHT ON THRU / MIDNIGHT THUNDER / STICK TO YOUR GUNS / FIXIN' TO DIE / BLURRED VISION / CALLING YOU OUT / HANGOVER & HEARTACHES / NO ONE RIDES FOR FREE / LAY IT DOWN.

Perfecting their power pop rock since the mid-'90s, New Jersey's Saves the Day call it like it is. They refrain from characteristic pogo-bouncing anthems for their own quirky post-punk and energetic live shows, influencing a new school of emo/punk bands along the way.

SHAM 69: [1978] Tell Us The Truth

Side one of Tell Us the Truth was recorded live, and it's inarguably fascinating as an anthropological document, capturing the Cockney yob in his native environment, complete with football chants and a spontaneous chorus of "Knees Up, Mother Brown." Jimmy Pursey's communication with his audience is inarguably impressive, and some of the songs have a good head of straight-ahead energy (especially "Borstal Breakout"), but the sound is thin and the band seems to have a hard time getting into fifth gear. The studio side actually sounds more impressive; the performances are tighter, Dave Parsons' guitar benefits from a bit of double-tracking, and Pursey sings more than he hectors. But Pursey was already starting to sound a bit pompous, and time has not been the least bit kind to songs like "I'm a Man I'm a Boy" and "Hey Little Rich Boy," which for all their sincerity don't say anything dozens of other bands haven't said better.
Tell Us the Truth sounds passionate, belligerent, and kinda dumb, but that's an improvement over Sham 69's later work, where the band sounds overblown, strident, and really, really dumb. The 2000 CD reissue features two bonus cuts, including a studio version of "Borstal Breakout."

trACks: WE GOT A FIGHT / RIP OFF / ULSTER / GEORGIA DAVIS IS INNOCENT / THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND / BORSTAL BREAKOUT / FAMILY LIFE / HEY LITTLE RICH BOY / I'M A MAN I'M A BOY / WHAT ABOUT THE LONELY / TELL US THE TRUTH / IT'S NEVER TOO LATE / WHO'S GENERATION / WHAT HAVE WE GOT.
 (BONUS).

ANGELIC UPSTART: [1994] Power of the Press [Step-1]

Formed on a South Shields council estate in 1977, the Upstarts soon attracted notoriety due to their aggressive music and uncompromising attitude. Their debut single "The Murder Of Liddle Towers" was self-released in 1978 and then picked up by Rough Trade and went on to sell many thousands of copies. It told the story of a boxing coach who was killed while in police custody and is one of the most incendiary punk 45s ever released. Even today it sounds incredible, dripping with anger, and its less than polished production being perfect. The B-side "Police Oppression" was also a brilliant track and singer Thomas "Mensi" Mensforth still gets harrassed from the police who have never forgiven him for these tunes.

trACks: I STAND ACCUSED / NOTTINGHAM SLAG / JOE WHERE ARE YOU NOW / SOLDIER / EMPTY STREET / BRIGHTON BOMB / POWER OF THE PRESS / STAB IN THE BACK / HERE I COME / THIN RED LINE / I'D KILL HER FOR SIXPENCE / GREENFIELDS OF FRANCE.

SHAM 69: [1980] The Game

Sham 69 are an English punk band that formed in Hersham in 1975.
Although not as commercially successful as many of their contemporaries, albeit with a greater number of chart entries, Sham 69 has been a huge musical and lyrical influence on the Oi! and streetpunk genres. The band allegedly derived their name from a piece of football-related graffiti that founder Jimmy Pursey saw on a wall, which originally said Walton and Hersham '69 but had partly faded away.

trACks: THE GAME / HUMAN ZOO / LORD OF THE FLIES / GIVE A DOG A BONE / IN AND OUT / TELL THE CHILDREN / SPRAY IT ON THE WALL / DEAD OR ALIVE / SIMON / DEJA VU / POOR COW / RUN WILD RUN FREE / UNITE AND WIN / DAYTRIPPER.

AGNOSTIC FRONT: [1999] Riot Riot Upstart [Epitah]

Agnostic Front is an American hardcore band that formed in New York City in 1980. The band began playing hardcore punk similar to bands like Black Flag and Negative Approach, and were thrust to the forefront of the burgeoning New York hardcore scene in the mid-1980s with their widely regarded 1984 classic Victim in Pain before evolving to incorporate thrash metal elements into their music. By the late '90s, Agnostic Front had signed with Epitaph Records and adopted a street punk sound before growing into a crossover metallic hardcore hybrid similar to bands like Hatebreed and Madball

the MOB: Let The Tribe Increase

There was something uniquely English about The Mob which to this day is difficult to define. A loose, understated eccentricity. A strangeness, fuelled by their association with free festivals and LSD. I can remember the Porky Prime Cut messages scratched on the inner groove of their records: ‘Acid Punks’, ‘Take a trip down’ etc. Unlike most of the Crass-type bands, The Mob never offered any solutions or calls for action.
