VA - A punk+new wave Explosion

Punk Rock. The very words now seem antiquated, a phrase that has passed both into common usage and the collective memory. It is amazing to think that in 2001 we are already 25 long years away from that drought-ridden summer that incubated the British punk (and its bastard offspring New Wave) explosion.
All rock & roll is based on shock value and when punk appeared it really did up the ante: Most people remember the moment punk went overground in Britain in late 1976, when the SEX PISTOLS made their famous appearance on the Tonight programme with Bill Grundy. "The Filth and the fury" was suddenly everywhere... The tabloids pounced upon the movement and overnight, you couldn't move for spiky haired urchins giving it plenty. However, punk had been gestating for some years previously, in the pub rock scene in Britain and the garage band scene in America.
Guitarist Lenny Kaye's collection LP of US garage bands, Nuggets, released in 1972, helped to define punk. It showed that it was not all sweet Mersey pop in the 1960's. Full of snarling bands like The Standells and the 13th Floor Elevators, Nuggets became an underground success, and helped inform US groups of the early 70's such as The Stooges and The New York Dolls. British entrepeneur Malcolm McLaren briefly managed the latter group in 1975 and brought a lot of their ideas over to Britain. He and fellow travellers took this basic template, added the disafectation of British youth and launched punk into a largely complacent music scene that didn't know its Topographic Ocean from its Tubular Bell.
