MOVING TARGETS - Brave Noise & Burning Water [.FLAC]

Boston legends Moving Targets released their second album, the Brave Noise LP, on Taang! in 1988. Listening years afterward, one is struck by how well the whole effort still holds together: the influential songwriting, musicianship, and above all Lou Giordano's production (with the up-and-coming Carl Plaster assisting). Moving Targets was a band who never got their due and remained largely unacknowledged -- even in Boston years down the line -- for their important contributions as a post-punk and pre-grunge link. Like their far better-known (and yet somehow still not recognized proportionally to their level of impact) colleagues Hüsker Dü, Moving Targets combined the ferocious spirit, energy, and alienated lyrics of hardcore with traditional rock & roll and pop songcraft. Still, the breakneck pace and attack of their 1986 debut Burning in Water had decidedly ebbed two years later. What listeners hear is the predictable maturing of a band, after their debut LP, doing a fine job of battling the sophomore slump. Bassist Pat Leonard had been replaced by Chuck Freeman, who makes significant vocal and instrumental contributions. On songs like "Carcrash," his backing vocals are far more pronounced and well-conceived than the seeming afterthoughts of lead singer Kenny Chambers' own voice-on-voice overdubs on Burning in Water. And on other songs, such as "Separate Hearts," Freeman's basslines take center stage, modulating with chorus and flanging effects in Cure-like intros and breaks. Chambers' guitars are still there, but at times his satisfyingly one-dimensional Angus Young/Pete Townsend/Ramones power chords of yore are offset by acoustic, clean electric, chorused, and backwards-tracked parts. Giordano opens up the band's sound to other possibilities on the record. He might have been encouraged by Chambers spreading his wings as a songwriter or vice-versa. Chambers still had one foot in his Boston's hardcore-scene upbringing, but more attention is spent on the melodic and layered side of pop and classic rock songwriting. The remaining nods to punk come in the eschewing of endless guitar soloing -- even when the timing seems to be begging for it (and he was fully capable of torrid leads, as heard in his contributions to the band Bullet Lavolta) -- and in the shorter bursts of rage and bombast than the extended anthems of Burning in Water. [Both of the first two LPs were packaged together on a 1993 CD.]

GUITAR WOLF - Jet Generation [.FLAC]

Tokyo's Guitar Wolf plays loud, fast, dirty punk rock. The trio -- which consists of guitarist Seiji, bassist Billy, and drummer Toru -- formed in the late '80s. Though the group's first two albums were released only in Japan, imports of the records and word of mouth about Guitar Wolf's incendiary live shows secured U.S. distribution for their next two releases, Wolf Rock and Kung Fu Ramone. An in-store performance at a New York record store impressed Matador Records enough to offer them a contract; 1996's Missile Me! was their first release for the prestigious indie imprint. In 2003, Guitar Wolf took their high-octane punk-a-billy to the punk-friendly Narnak label for the American release of 2003's UFO Romantics; Loverock followed in 2004. The busy noise-mongers managed to drop a second album by the end of 2004, the manic Rock 'n' Roll Etiquette. After completing a U.S. tour in early 2005, Guitar Wolf returned to Japan and Billy suffered a fatal heart attack on March 30 at the age of 38. The band soldiered on with new bassist, Ug.

GROOVIE GHOULIES - Appetite For Adrenochrome [.FLAC]

Horror movie-fueled Sacramento, CA, pop-punks the Groovie Ghoulies originally comprised singer/bassist Kepi, his guitarist wife Roach, and drummer Wendy. After debuting in 1989 with the album Appetite for Adrenochrome, the group spent the early '90s largely out of the spotlight, issuing only the occasional single (including 1990's "Lost Generation" and 1992's "Christmas on Mars") before finally releasing their sophomore album, Born in the Basement, in 1994. By now a hugely popular attraction on the Sacramento club circuit, in 1996 the Groovie Ghoulies signed to Lookout Records to release World Contact Day; Wendy left the lineup soon after, however, and was replaced by ex-Screeching Weasel drummer Dan Panic. In the wake of 1997's Re-Animation Festival, Panic exited as well and was eventually replaced by drummer Jaz Brown. The Ghoulies' fifth LP, Fun in the Dark, followed in 1999, and a year later the group resurfaced with Travels with My Amp. The band left Lookout! soon after, but showed up on Stardumb for the Freaks on Parade EP in 2002. Featuring new drummer Scampi, Go! Stories was the first full-length released on the label, appearing later in the summer and followed by a European tour. The group followed up in late 2003 with a record made up mostly of re-recorded versions of old singles and Lookout album tracks called Monster Club. After leaving Stardumb and starting their own imprint, Green Door Records, the group released an amped-up EP of Chuck Berry covers, Berry'd Alive, in August 2005, and proved they were still going strong in 2007 with their ninth release, 99 Lives.

GOVERNMENT ISSUE - Government Issue [.FLAC]

One of the longest-lived bands on the Washington, D.C., hardcore scene, Government Issue (or G.I. for short) carried the torch for traditional hardcore punk on their early records, but evolved into something more adventurous by adding bits of metal, new wave pop, and psychedelia. Frontman John Stabb (born John Schroeder) guided the group through a legion of personnel shifts and several label changes, which made their nine-year lifespan all the more remarkable. Since their demise, G.I. has remained somewhat overlooked in relation to the rest of the D.C. hardcore bands of their time, in part because their music never really fit the proto-emo bent of much of the local Dischord stable.

GOOD RIDDANCE - Ballads From The Revolution [.FLAC]

Good Riddance is a straight-edge hardcore punk band from Santa Cruz, CA. Led by vocalist Russ Rankin, the band's longtime lineup included guitarist Luke Pabich, bassist Chuck Platt, and drummer Sean "SC" Sellers. Although it was formed in 1986 by ex-Fury 66 member Rankin as a voice for his political frustrations and protests, the band did not gel until Pabich's arrival. In 1990, they released their first 7", Gidget, on Little Deputy Records.

GOVERNMENT ISSUE - Finale, Live at Ritz, NYC and KJFC-FM '88/'89 [.FLAC]

Government Issue was an American hardcore punk band from Washington, D.C. active from 1980 to 1989. The band experienced many changes in membership during its nine-year existence, with singer John Stabb as the only consistent member in an ever-fluctuating lineup that at various times included notable musicians Brian Baker, Mike Fellows, Steve Hansgen, J. Robbins, and Peter Moffett. Government Issue originated from the Washington, D.C. hardcore scene but added elements of heavy metal, New Wave, and psychedelic rock on later records. Though this has caused the band to be sometimes overlooked in relation to other Washington, D.C. hardcore acts, their stylistic diversity made them influential to later punk rock groups.

GORILLA BISCUITS - Start Today [.FLAC]

Gorilla Biscuits were formed when Smilios and Nick Drysdale met Civarelli while they were both attending the same high school on Long Island. All three were fans of the band Agnostic Front, and started going to hardcore shows at CBGB on weekends. There they met people like Ray Cappo and John Porcelly of the band Youth Of Today.
Arthur sought to form a hardcore band and asked Civ to act as vocalist. However Civ was not interested in singing, and due to nerves had to face the floor or wall during early gigs. Members of the band Token Entry arranged a gig for the still unnamed band (Gorilla Biscuits used Token Entry's drummer, Ernie Parada for that first show), but needed a name to give it to the promoter. A popular drug in the area at that time was quaaludes, which people called "ape shit," or "gorilla biscuits" due to the pill's large size. Eventually the name evolved into Gorilla Biscuits, and though it was initially only meant to be temporary, they have continued to use it.
The band made a number of low-fi demo tapes which were sold at a dollar store. Their first official t-shirts were blue with an image of a gorilla riding a skateboard and were made using black magic markers and an ink blotter.

GANG OF FOUR - Solid Gold & Another Day, Another Dollar [.FLAC]

Formed in 1977 by Leeds University students Jon King (vocals), Andy Gill (guitar), Dave Allen (bass), and Hugo Burnham (drums), Gang of Four (along with the Fall, Mekons, and Liliput) produced some of the most exhilarating and lasting music of the early English post-punk era of 1978-1983. Fueled by the fury of punk rock and radical political theory, Gang of Four successfully welded the two in an inspired display of polemics and music that addressed the vagaries of life in the modern world (including love and romance) as matters of political inquiry.
Despite the fact that this sounds rife with the potential for being long on rhetoric and short on groove, such was not the case. What made Gang of Four's polemical clang'n'roll so compelling was that it worked as harsh, bracing, and ultimately liberating rock & roll. With Allen and Burnham combining as a formidable and frequently very funky rhythm section, Gill didn't play guitar as much as emit thick wads of semi-tuneful distortion, while King "sang" in a dry, declamatory fashion similar to that of the Fall's Mark E. Smith. The rhythms were stripped down and jagged; at times Gill would dispense with guitar solos entirely and "play" non-solos, which were (surprise!) silence. Song titles sounded like the titles of radical political essays: "At Home He's a Tourist," "Damaged Goods," "It's Her Factory," "Anthrax," "To Hell with Poverty," all of it openly challenging the audience's preconceived notions about rock music, performance, the cult of celebrity, and the nature of politics. And in doing so, GOF conveyed rage, confusion, and loss of identity as well as any band of their time.

CITIZEN FISH - Wider Than A Postcard [.FLAC]

Citizen Fish are essentially a reconstituted version of England's Subhumans, except with a marked tendency toward ska-punk rather than straight-ahead punk rock. Growing out of vocalist Dick Lukas' previous ska project, Culture Shock, Citizen Fish feature two other ex-Subhumans -- guitarist Phil and drummer Trotsky -- plus bassist Jasper. The group debuted in 1990 with Free Souls in a Trapped Environment, following it with Wider Than a Postcard; Flinch appeared in 1994. Signing a distribution deal with Lookout Records, Citizen Fish issued Millennia Madness in 1995 and Thirst in 1996, returning in 1999 with Active Ingredients. Life Size, released in spring 2001, marked the band's first for Honest Don's Hardly Recordings. In early 2007, they appeared on a split with Leftöver Crack entitled Deadline and issued via Fat Wreck Chords (the vinyl, however, came out on Alternative Tentacles). In 2011, the band reunited to release its first full-length album in ten years, Goods, on Alternative Tentacles.

BUZZCOCKS - Entertaining Friends Live at The Hammersmith Odeon '79 [.FLAC]

Formed in Manchester, England, in 1975, the Buzzcocks were one of the most influential bands to emerge in the initial wave of punk rock. With their crisp melodies, driving guitars, and guitarist Pete Shelley's biting lyrics, the Buzzcocks were one of the best, most influential punk bands. The Buzzcocks were inspired by the Sex Pistols' energy, yet they didn't copy the Pistols' angry political stance. Instead, they brought that intense, brilliant energy to the three-minute pop song. Shelley's alternately funny and anguished lyrics about adolescence and love were some of the best and smartest of his era; similarly, the Buzzcocks' melodies and hooks were concise and memorable. Over the years, their powerful punk-pop has proven enormously influential, with echoes of their music being apparent in everyone from Hüsker Dü to Nirvana.

BUCK-O-NINE - Libido [.FLAC]

Buck-O-Nine is an American ska punk band which was formed in San Diego in 1991. The band has toured internationally and released several albums and e.p.'s, as well as appearing on compilations and film soundtracks. During the mid-to-late 1990s, they experienced mainstream success with the release of the album Twenty-Eight Teeth and its most successful single, My Town. Estimates put combined worldwide album sales at approximately 400,000. As the popularity of third-wave ska waned, Buck-O-Nine stopped touring full-time in 2000, but continues to perform regularly throughout California and much of the southwestern United States. Since 2001, the band has also performed in the UK and Hawaii.

Beowülf is a crossover thrash metal band formed Venice Beach, California in 1981 by Michael Alvarado, Dale Henderson, Mike Jensen and Paul Yamada. The group never gained a large mainstream success, but is considered one of the first bands that defined the "Venice Scene" in the 1980s, along with Suicidal Tendencies, Neighborhood Watch, No Mercy, Excel and Uncle Slam, who all played a mix of skate punk, hardcore, heavy metal and thrash.
So far, Beowülf has released five studio albums (with a sixth due in 2011). They split up in 1995, but reformed in 2000. The band has had numerous line-up changes and Henderson has been the only constant member.
Their classic line-up is Henderson (vocals), Mike Jensen (guitar), Paul Yamada (bass) and Michael Alvarado (drums).
