Welt: {1995} Better Days {@320kbps}

Welt's slightly derivative '90s punk has a youthful bounce on this debut, but when compared to their obvious influences (Face to Face, Social Distortion), the songwriting on Better Days just doesn't hold up. After the punkers dropped a couple 7" singles in their home town of Sacramento, CA, SoCal punk homestead Dr. Dream Records hooked up with Welt, eventually releasing three full-lengths before the label folded in the late '90s. Bassist/vocalist/songwriter Jason Cooper does a good job leading his bandmates through 14-tracks of punk-by-the-numbers, but his lyrics and choruses have a pedestrian flavor. Tracks like "Better Days" and "Always in My Way" are typically forgettable examples of Cooper's sketchy songwriting. Confident riffs and decent verses give way on these tracks (and others) to ill-conceived, often repetitive choruses that kill the music's momentum. Still, Better Days reveals Welt to be a fairly accomplished unit with a potential that more recording and touring would eventually help the group to realize. ~ Vincent Jeffries, All Music Guide

Welt: {1996} Kicked in the Teeth Again {@320kbps}

On Welt's second full-length release on Orange County's Dr. Dream Records, the California punk outfit displays more than a modicum of songwriting growth and delivers their improved material with an immediacy fans familiar with the group should expect. After the success of their raucous debut, Jason Cooper and his band seemed to have put in an extra compositional effort, and 1996's Kicked in the Teeth Again are tight and catchy as a result. Standout tracks include "The Usual" (possibly the record's best), "Half Way," with its hint of emo, and the classic Elvis cover, "Suspicious Minds," done up quick and tasty. While often compared to bands like Face to Face and Pennywise, Welt seemed to be finding their own niche in the crowded punk market place on this 1996 offering.
Definitely up to the standard of their first-rate influences, Welt put together solid performances of competent punk material on Kicked in the Teeth Again, earning themselves a spot on the list of formidable '90s SoCal punk bands. ~

Zoinks!: {1995} Bad Move Space Cadet {@320kbps}

A must have for any punkrocker. This was Zoinks first full length album put out by Dr.Strange records. It features their classic cover of the theme song from greatest american hero. And, as with Stranger Anxiety, it features original lead singer Zach. I loved Well and Good, but there was definitely something missing after Zach left the band. Soap Factory and Uma 14 Times and Susy Bright are some of my favorite tracks. BTW, check out Bob Conrad's website, secondguess.net, where you can learn more about Zoinks and his new band PrimaVolta, with zoinks member Rob.

NEW MODEL ARMY: Fuck Texas, Sing For Us

The album was recorded during the High tour of 2007/2008 and features selected recordings from a number of venues that have were spun together to form a single concert - much like as on "...& Nobody Else". Mixed by Justin, Michael and Dean in the band's Bradford studio, the album has been mastered by Jon Astley, whose recent projects have included the re-remastering of The Who's back catalogue, and Joolz' new album Spirit Stories. Leaning heavily on material from High, it also includes live recording of classics such as Poison Street, Family and 225 which have never been released on an official live album before. The version of Vagabonds is a re-working by Marshall, substituting a Les Paul Custom, a Marshall JCM800 and volume for a violin...

DARKBUSTER: A Weakness For Spirits

Darkbuster is a punk rock band hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, known largely for their songs about the joys of heavy drinking, which have earned them a strong following in the American Northeast.
The band was formed by singer/guitarist Lenny Lashley, drummer Eric Edmonston, and bassist Mike Gurley in 1996 and developed a following around Massachusetts. In 1997 the band recorded a nine-song demo tape, and in 2000 released their debut album, 22 Songs You'll Never Want To Hear Again! The album instantly cemented their reputation in the Boston punk scene, filled with songs about beer, being a loser, and even a few juvenile-but-hilarious potshots at other local bands (and even the group's own members).

the Reputation - {2002} The Reputation {Initial}

With its intelligent, nouveau-feminist lyrics and timely riffery, Elizabeth Elmore's mid-'90s Champaign, OH, outfit Sarge seemed ever on the verge of breaking through, but could never quite reach the success its critical raves would suggest. Elmore dissolved the band in 1999 to study litigation at Northwestern Law, but two years later the rock bug bit again and she recruited guitarist Shawn Hewitt, bassist Joel Root, and a parade of drummers to form the Reputation. The Reputation never veered far from the formula of her former band, aside from perhaps slightly softer edges. Elmore's melodic, hyper-hooky indie power rock still teemed with flawed, fully formed anti-heroes and heroines on verge of multiple breakdowns, and stories peppered with polysyllabic words tossed-off nimbly, never for show.
Unfortunately, also as with her former band, the act's following lagged behind its positive critical reception. After two LPs, a solid, but straightforward self-titled debut on Initial Records in 2002 and the darker, more diverse To Force a Fate in 2004 on Lookout!, Elmore posted of the demise of the Reputation on the band's website.

Evil Mothers - {1994} Crossdresser {Invisible}

EVIL MOTHERS' 1992 debut, the Lee Popa (MINISTRY) produced Crossdresser, effectively captured the enthusiastic Tribal-Industrial-Punk essence of the young band. With the release of I Like Fur, the band continues to transcend the Industrial, Metal, and Alternative Rock genres with their own mix of realism and surrealism. FLASH FORWARD TO 1997....the killings continue. The Spirits continue to inspire this nocturnal gallery of perverts with their latest incantation, Spider Sex and Car Wrecks; an ectoplasmic body of work that feeds on the literary bones of J.G. Ballard, (f.y.i......recent film "Crash"....banned in the UK), Von Sacher-Masoch, Katherine Dunn, Tod Browning, and Jim Jones among others. Coupled with Evil Mothers trademark aural sects (including drum-circles, analogs & sick strings) and heavy knocking beats - some of which are courtesy of Martin Atkins - a carnival of percussion transpires. Loaded with menacing samples, twisted subcultural lyrics, oil drums and bagpipes, Evil Mothers create a massive wall of sound. On This journey through the darkside, with Atkins also serving as executive producer, the band's already complex songwriting is taken to another level.
Aggressive, hypnotic, and tribal, Spider Sex and Car Wrecks captures the power of the Evil Mothers live show. An energy that has been with the band since they first began kickin' up dust along the border of Texas an hell in 1992.

Evil Mothers - {1994} Pitchforks and Perverts {Invisible}

Created in 1990 as a sountrack to the ritual murders being committed at the time, EVIL MOTHERS welcomed us to the Texan darkside, where fact and fiction are a blurred reality of tribal rhythms and melodic noise. In the summer of 1995, EVIL MOTHERS headlined the notorious Invisible Route 666 Tour. The twisted brainchild of Martin Atkins and Curse Mackey, the well-received tour (which featured several Invisible acts including PSYCHIC TV) hit 51 cities and bolstered the band's evergrowing fanbase. To coincide with the tour, Invisible released the Invisible Route 666 compilation CD which featured 3 tracks from EVIL MOTHERS' 1994 album Pitchforks and Perverts. It was this release (produced by Martin Atkins and recorded at the renowned Chicago Trax Studio) that established EVIL MOTHERS as one of the most exciting and innovative 'industrial?' bands on the circuit.

Rock 'N' Roll Summercamp '98 - {2000} Self Titled {Black Dog}

It's kinda hard to call this Rock 'n Roll, except maybe in a 'roots' sort of sense. More likely you'd find this under Americana or alt-country. In any case, it's a bomber album. Some of these tracks are excellent (Crow Jane, SOB, The River, Part of Me) some are pretty good (Not So Far Away), and some will BLOW YOUR MIND: (Livin' on the Road, Grey and Blue). Gotta love the flute on Livin' on the Road, and the lyrics to Grey and Blue are simply stunning. Download this album. Love it.
