UK SUBS: Left for Dead - Alive in Holland '86 [ROIR]

Once a major player in the second British punk explosion of 1979-1980, the UK Subs still retain a cult following whose tastes never left that era. This factor, coupled with singer Charlie Harper's boundless perseverance, has enabled the UK Subs -- short for "United Kingdom Subversives" -- to outlast first-generation peers like the Clash and Sex Pistols. Never a real presence in America, Harper's profile received an unexpected boost there from Guns N' Roses' inclusion of "Down on the Farm" on its dubious punk covers album, The Spaghetti Incident. Harper's own musical history stretches to the early '70s, with combos like Charlie Harper's Free Press and the Marauders. His career is an anomaly, by any measure; how many middle-aged former hairdressers are fronting punk groups with ever-fluctuating lineups? Left for Dead reissues a cassette-only recording of a 1986 gig first taped in Holland. Immediacy is the name of the game here, a point driven home by the cover packaging ("23 Songs! 60 Minutes!") and Harper's breathless delivery; he remains a presence unto himself, even if he is the sole surviving original member onstage. The band's style is agreeably diverse within punk's bass-drum-guitar constraints, a reflection of its flirtations with melodic punk (Another Kind of Blues(X), 1979), glossy experimental pop (Endangered Species, 1981), and primal proto-metal (Flood of Lies, 1984). Songs aim darts at cops ("CID," "New York State Police"), broken romance (the affecting "Fear of Girls"), rock biz hypocrisy ("Limo Life"), nuclear holocaust ("Warhead"), and homelessness (the sardonic "I Live in a Car"). The crowd howls along to every chorus, supplying an atmosphere airbrushed from the standard artfully dubbed live album. So do Big Takeover editor Jack Rabid's liner notes, which could have stood some updating (even while they cheerfully recount that Harper led three completely different bands in the years before Left for Dead's release). The UK Subs' persistence is unlikely to change the big-time rock scene, let alone their lowly cult stature, but punk fans will find plenty of delights here.

IN MY EYES: [1998] The Difference Between [REVELATION]

Boston hardcore quintet In My Eyes was formed in early 1997 by vocalist Sweet Pete, guitarists Jeff Neumann and Anthony Pappalardo, bassist Damian Genuardi and drummer Luke Garro. Signing to Revelation, the band issued their debut effort The Difference Between in 1998; Nothing to Hide followed two years later. In My Eyes is one of the few bands in the hardcore world that is creating new sounds and reviving a genre that has seen little change over the past decade. A professed Straight Edge band, In My Eyes takes positive messages, interweaves it into their heavy handed guitar tracks. "Why is it you can ruin everything we've made with one touch? And all the effort you waste lashing out...could get something done / I'll stay focused, you stay lost, " sings Sweet Pete on "The K.O.S.T." Anthony Pappalardo and Neil St. Clair add distorted rhythm along with a range of experimental guitar work, while bassist Damian Genuardi quietly lays down a foundation of basslines for the rest of the band to build on. In My Eyes is part of a new crop of hardcore bands that are reenergizing the genre. No longer are groups coming strictly from New York circuits. Instead bands are coming from all over the country, and they're offering a unique take on the classic style of hardcore.

12 CENTS FOR MARVIN: [2001] King of the Ring [CD BABY]

Twelve Cents for Marvin was formed by a group of Colorado State University students in Ft. Collins, CO, in late 1996 and early 1997. According to the liner notes of their debut album, the band got its unusual name when they went to Denver to see a concert and it was canceled. Walking around Denver, they came upon a vagrant named Marvin, who insisted they give him 12 cents. Twelve Cents for Marvin has a unique sound. It's as if a psychedelic band like Love invited a ska-tinged horn section to play for them. Their versatile instrumentation allows them to perform an unusually wide variety of music most bands usually need to bring in session musicians to create.

the ERGS!: [2005] Dorkrockcorkrod [WHOA OH]

Three willfully geeky guys from New Jersey who play pop-punk with speed, power, and a mighty smirk (which occasionally belies the fact they sometimes mean what they say), the Ergs (or, as they like to call themselves, "The Near-Sighted Three") came together in 2000, with Jeffrey Erg (Jeff Schroeck) on guitar and vocals, Joey Erg (Joe Keller) on bass, and Mikey Erg (Mike Yannich) on drums and lead vocals. The band wasted no time preserving their music for posterity, putting out two self-released CD-Rs in their first year as a band, but the group first attracted attention outside their peer group with the five-song Three Guys, Twelve Eyes EP, released by the Whoa Oh label in 2001. In a bid to raise their profile by being sued, the Ergs next issued The Ben Kweller EP in 2002. It borrowed the artwork from Kweller's disc EP Phone Home and featured a song poking less-than-charitable fun at the indie rock protégé. In 2003, the Ergs put out their first full-length album, Dorkrockcorkrod, which earned enthusiastic reviews in the punk press and spread word about the band outside of their home state. After an initial release on Whoa Oh, the album was picked up by Don Giovanni Records, which distributed the Ergs' next EP, 2005's Jersey's Best Prancers (whose title and artwork was a play on the 1997 Lifetime album). In 2006, the group was chosen to back Dave Parasite of The Parasites as he launched a tour to support a Parasites best-of CD, and they signed with Dirtnap Records, which scheduled the band's second full-length album, tentatively called Upstairs/Downstairs, for the spring of 2007.

NRA: Machine [GEARHEAD Recs.]
Sixth go-round for veteran Dutch punks NRA is aptly titled - first song "Why Did I Listen To You" fairly busts out of your speakers like that snarling fumetti android Ranxerox from Heavy Metal and proceeds to batter you around the room for the next fifteen tracks with a potent left-right combo of boundless energy and Black Flag/Husker Du-style hooks. But also like dear old Ranx, there's a heart bristling under that leathery hide, and you can hear it beat in frontman Aziz's war-weary vocals, and in the band's relentless drive (boosted again by Dutch engineer supreme Menno Bakker), which hasn't flagged much over its fifteen-year history. Sometimes taking a punch can be the best thing you can do to clear your head, so if the armies of faceless punk outfits have you in a haze, step up to NRA and let them clean your clock. You'll thank us for it later.

MURDER INC.: [1992] Murder Inc. [Invisible Recs.]
During one of the many breakups of Killing Joke, key members of the band joined with industrial vocalist Chris Connelly to kick out the crunchy jams. For the most part, Murder Inc. sounds like Killing Joke on a bad day, with little thought given toward melody or playing more than a couple of the same chords repeatedly. The problem certainly isn't with Chris Connelly's aggressive vocals; the part-time member of Ministry and Revolting Cocks brings exactly the right swagger to the collaboration. He varies his approach and tone from snarling anger to decadent crooning. The Killing Joke boys, on the other hand, seem content to play the same Killing Joke riffs and chords repeatedly. Murder Inc. is a hit and miss affair. Other than the amazing album opener "Murder Inc.," where the music matches Connelly's efforts and energy, the other players rip off their own Extremities, Dirt & Various Repressed Emotions sound a few too many times. When they relax a bit and stop trying to repeat past glories they achieve their best sonic stew. Connelly's vocal style is such that the standard Killing Joke murkiness mires many of his efforts to bring emotion to the songs. Only when his bandmates allow him room to breathe, as on "Supergrass," "Hole in the Wall," "Uninvited Guest," "Motion Sickness," "Last of the Biomechanical Urgents," and the title song, do the dynamics make for a thrilling beast. This is ultimately a rather pale imitation of Killing Joke, and it's not up to par with Chris Connelly's amazing solo albums, but it's an interesting experiment that works here and there.

LUDICHRIST: [1998] Immaculate Deception
Ludichrist was an American hardcore punk/speed metal band formed in the 1980s in New York. Their musical style broke from traditional New York hardcore roots by adding aspects of rock, heavy metal and jazz, like extended guitar solos and musical interludes. After their second proper album, lead singer Tommy Christ and guitarist Glen Cummings broke up the band and reformed with a new rhythm section as the more humor-oriented, style-jumping Scatterbrain. Original guitarist Mark Kanabrocki, who had written most of the first albums songs, left the band before it was recorded and appears only on the record release issued from CBGB called Off the Board. On their debut album Immaculate Deception, one track featured guest vocalists from fellow New York bands Agnostic Front, Nuclear Assault, The Crumbsuckers and Leeway. The original drummer and founder of Ludichrist (also the guy who named the band), Al Batross, left after the first album Immaculate Deception was recorded.
Incredibly, Immaculate Deception was reviewed in the May 11, 1987 issue of People between Bryan Adams Into the Fire and The Kinks Think Visual! By the time Ludichrist's second album Powertrip was released, the band only retained two original members, vocalist Tommy and guitarist Glen which naturally lead to a drastic change in style and sound. The band became far more metallic in style, while retaining a range of musical influences and being more overtly humorous, they abandoned the early hardcore style, leaving many of the band's early fans sorely disappointed. But the new style won them many new metal crossover fans and featured stellar muscicianship by Paul Neider (guitar) and Dave Miranda (drums) in particular. Many have noted that the track "Green Eggs and Ham" (on "Immaculate Deception") was possibly the first example of a hard core or metal band paying homage to rap music, as a break in the middle of this song is a cover of the Run DMC song "Rock Box" (with self-mocking, humorous lyrics added.) This for, example, pre-dates songs by bands like Anthrax which later received heavy rotation on MTV.

NEKROMANTIX: [1996] Demons Are A Girls Best Friend [ESP recs.-Denmark]
Nekromantix counts as one of the wilder bands working in psychobilly. Kim Nekroman (bass, vocals) quit an eight-year career as a submarine operator in the Royal Danish Navy to found the band in 1989; Peter Sandorff (guitar, vocals) and Kristian Sandorff (drums) joined him in the trio soon after. After performing live on two occasions, the band immediately gained an enthusiastic following, not only in Denmark but also in Germany, where they made their first festival showing in Hamburg. That performance led to a record deal for the first Nekromantix album, Hellbound. With a sound once described as "Elvis meets the Wolfman," the band toured extensively throughout Europe in 1991, releasing Curse of the Coffin, their classic second full-length album, that same year. The Brought Back to Life EP appeared in 1994, and two years later Nekromantix offered up Demons Are a Girl's Best Friend. A tour in Japan followed, as well as a 2000 live set for Kick Music. Nekromantix signed with Hellcat Records, a vanity label of the respected punk indie Epitaph, for 2002's Return of the Loving Dead, their U.S. debut. The guys stayed with the label through 2004's Dead Girls Don't Cry, which appeared after Nekroman's relocation from Copenhagen to Los Angeles (the Sandorff brothers stayed put in Denmark). Brought Back to Life Again followed a year later, which was actually a reissue of the by then out of print 1994 release. The Nekromantix lineup did see some turnover over time, and backing up Nekroman's signature coffin-shaped bass and vocals in 2005 were guitarist Trouble Tony and drummer Wasted James. By the April 2007 release of Life Is a Grave & I Dig It!, however, he was instead joined by guitarist Tröy Deströy and drummer Andy DeMize.

NEUROSIS: [1994] The Word as Law + Aberration [ep][Lookout Recs.]
Formed in Oakland, CA in late 1985, Neurosis developed a style blending industrial, heavy metal, and alternative rock with often spiritually focused lyrics. Members Steve Von Till (guitar, vocals, percussion), Dave Edwardson (bass, vocals), Scott Kelly (bass, vocals), Jason Roeder (drums), Noah Landis (keyboards, samples, tape effects), and Pete Inc. (visuals) debuted in 1987 with the album Pain of Mind, but it took nearly five years for any follow-up to be released. Both Souls at Zero and The Word as Law appeared in 1992, followed by Enemy of the Sun a year later. 1996's Through Silver in Blood became the band's most popular release, and 1999's Steve Albini-produced Times of Grace helped build upon that breakthrough. Sovereign followed a year later. 2001's Sun That Never Sets stuck with more tribal-like beats and composition.

THE UNDERTONES: [1981] Positive Touch [Rykodisc]
The Undertones' third album is a marked departure from the speedy pop-punk of their first two. The Buzzcocks-derived ramalama is almost entirely gone, replaced by a more varied and softer instrumental palette that features new textures like piano (courtesy of Paul Carrack, then in Squeeze) and trumpet. Oddly, the new arrangements, when mixed with Feargal Sharkey's tightly wound vocals, have the effect of actually increasing the tension. Even tender, largely acoustic tunes like the lovely "Julie Ocean" have an undercurrent of anxiety, and faster tracks like the pounding opener "Fascination" and the near-paranoid "His Goodlooking Girlfriend" are downright nerve-wracking. The combination is best heard in the panicky "Crisis of Mine" and the sardonic "Life's Too Easy," two of the album's better tracks, but even the buzzy "Hannah Doot," one of the few songs that sounds like it would fit on the Undertones' earlier albums, is enhanced by the nervy production. The Rykodisc reissue adds four bonus tracks, including a less-interesting early version of "Life's Too Easy."... by Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

DIE FORM: [1996] L'ame Electrique [Hyperium]
Die Form is chiefly the project of French artist Philippe Fichot, who is usually accompanied by singer Eliane P. Primarily an industrial band, Die Form possess a strong gothic sensibility that is manifested in both the music and in the fetishistic sexual imagery of Fichot's lyrics. Die Form's albums include Rose au Coeur Violet (1994), L'Ame Electronique (1996), and Duality (1998) Extremum was issued in fall 2000. The double-disc Akt: Best of the Side Projects followed in spring 2001. Die Form's slickest production to date is captured on L'Ame Electronique. It's a 15-song storybook of dark passion around the French world and vocal wizardry. Phillipe Fichot's impurely charged lyrics are frightening; however, chanteuse Elaine P. finds a balance with her heavenly vocal presentation. The members of Die Form aim to make goth rock artistically sophisticated, and they do it the way they see fit. Album highlights include "Martyrium 2," "La Machine Moderne," and "Unreal Cinema 1."

HORACE PINKER: [2000] Pop Culture Failure [Jump Up]
This album, Horace Pinker's third full-length, created a bit of confusion upon its release in June 2000, for not only did the set boast a quite different sound, but a different lineup from their Copper Regret EP, which arrived just two months earlier. In fact, the release dates were deceptive: the album predated the EP, having been recorded between fall 1998 and early spring 1999. Earlier in 1998, bassist Miguel Barron departed the band, just as new guitarist Matt Arluck arrived. Keen to get into the studio, Lynyrd's Innards bassist Karl Eifrig was brought in as a stopgap, but ended up making significant contributions to Pop Culture Failure, co-writing a number of the tracks. However, by the time the Pinkers came to record Copper Regret, Eifrig had been replaced by the newly recruited Chris Bauermeister. In any event, the album is more than just a snapshot in time, and takes the band to a grand new level of musicianship, songwriting, and performance. The entire set fizzes with energy and bristles with intent, encompassing a wider spectrum of styles than listeners would expect from Horace Pinker, as the band shifts agilely from the jubilant punk rock of "Second Best" to the pummeling hardcore of "Doorway" to the fist-in-the-air power ballad opening of "Refined" to the pop/rock and punk of "Nothing at All." The entire album is drenched in strong melodies and awash in equally powerful emotions, with some of the numbers straying straight into emo territory. Unusually for this genre, though, the intensity of delivery is matched by the depth of the band's sharply edged lyrics. The guitar work is its equal, whether roaring through "Closed" or tossing out rousing rock leads and chiming, poppier chords. The rhythm section is solid as a rock, but as exhilarating as fireworks on the Fourth of July. All in all, Pop Culture Failure is a superb set that deserves to punt the Pinkers straight to punk superstardom.

SLAPSHOT: (2001) Greatest Hits, Slashes and Crosschecks [[#320kbps]]

In July 1997, Slapshot played what was to be their last concert in the United States for five years, in Plymouth, Massachusetts. They toured Europe in 1999, including a stop at the Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium. In December 1999, a Slapshot tribute album called Boston Drops The Gloves - A Tribute To Slapshot was released by Flat Records (the label owned by Ken Casey of the Dropkick Murphys) and San Francisco-based TKO Records. The album included covers by 22 Boston bands.
In 2001, Slapshot issued a new album entitled Greatest Hits, Slashes and Crosschecks featuring re-recorded versions of classic Slapshot songs. They followed up with 2003's Digital Warfare (I Scream Records) and 2005's Tear It Down, along with several more European tours. In 2006, Slapshot released a statement on their website announcing that the band was defunct. However, on June 30, 2007, they played at the Significant Fest 2007 in Clearwater, Florida. Also on the bill were Killing Time, 108 and Uppercut. In July 2008, they played a couple of dates in Europe, with a stop at the With Full Force festival in Leipzig, Germany.
Slapshot played a show in Haverhill, Massachusetts on November 8th, 2008 with Ten Yard Fight, Step Forward, and Word For Word, and on December 28 in Boston at the Middle East with The Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

JAWBOX: (1994) For Your Own Special Sweetheart (Atlantic/WEA)

"For Your Own Special Sweetheart" is one of the great rock albums of the 90s. Their's was a noisy, often dissonant, angular sound, firmly rooted in the post-Fugazi D.C. sound, which, of course, means hardcore energy, post-punk structures, and sheets upon sheets of guitar. So what's the big deal? Songs, baby: the ability to write memorable tunes. Jawbox had melodies that traversed the emotional spectrum, but always tinged with elements of bittersweet, melancholy dissonance. The haunting overtones of Sonic Youth, at their most transcendent, are channeled into high-energy, rhythmically dynamic tunes. This mixture of the subtle and the muscular carries over into the vocals, where thoughtful, allusive lyrics are belted out with conviction and power. By the time this album was recorded, Jawbox were a tight, kinetic force, and the pristine recording successfully captures their unstoppable live energy.
It's too bad this album didn't sell better. In a decade when scores indie rock bands, in the wake of Nirvana's success, were being signed to major labels, Jawbox were particularly unfortunate victims of the indie snobbery that caused many of these endeavors to tank. They were a band that were able to succesfully combine musical professionalism with noisy rock of the post-punk lineage, and there's little doubt that had they chosen to continue into this century, they could have provided a valuable example for younger bands, showing that accessibile guitar rock need not be retro.-- Phil Avetxori

MADBALL: (1995) Droppin' Many Suckers (Wreckage Recs.)

Simply, one of the best New York Hardcore releases ever. Honestly, forget about the metal-core stuff they're doing today. This is aggressive, ugly, in-your-face, brutal old school New York hardcore at it's finest. I can't believe that upon playing this cd that my teeth didn't get punched out by the ferocity of this friggin album. Some songs are old Agnostic Front tunes, Roger from A.F. plays bass on this.

KLAMYDIA: (2009) Rujoa Taidetta

The title track, "Miljoonan Kilsan Tennarit", "m+ñ oon tyhm+ñ", "haaveet el+ñtt+ñ+ñ", and "h+ñn on poissa" are the highlights of the album, fusing together the catchy choruses and raw punk energy to the extent that the songs can still be called punk rock and played at the radio stations simultaneously. In other words, they present a good mix of pop and punk rock, appealing to people all over the music spectrum. The only problem is that Klamydia sing in Finnish so I don't expect most readers of Rockfreaks.net to even give a damn, but I'm sure there are a few Finns out there who will appreciate some positive comments about the band that the media loves to hate. I'm not calling "Rujoa Taidetta" an artistic masterpieces, because it's far from that, but it's a great record to stick on during those times when you just don't wanna think.

SIN DIOS: Ruido Anticapitalista & Alerta Antifascista [[#320kbps]]

Sin Dios (English: Godless) is a hardcore/anarcho-punk band from Spain that formed in 1988 in Madrid. Their first gigs were held in squatted houses (in Spanish Casa Okupa). In 1990 they released their first demo "...Ni amo"which contained 13 tracks and took them to their first tour across Spain always playing within autonomous and libertarian surroundings. In 1991 they recorded with another band a split L.P., "Ruido Anticapitalista" (Anticapitalist Noise), produced by the band's Potential Hardcore (alternative label). Since then, they have produced five albums and many eps and complitaions. Also been to numerous concert tours across Europe, Latin America and Japan.
On the 30th of July 2006 the band announced that they would "cease its musical activity". The announcement was followed among other things by "TO OUR ENEMIES: WE CONTINUE ON OTHER FRONTS" and by denunciations to the Israeli aggression, American imperialism and the like.

SLAPSHOT: (1996) Olde Tyme Hardcore (Century Media Recs.) [[#320kbps]]

Slapshot is a straight edge hardcore band from Boston, Massachusetts. Slapshot was formed in 1985 by Steve Risteen and Mark McKay, formerly of Terminally Ill; Jack "Choke" Kelly, formerly of Negative FX and Last Rights; and Jonathan Anastas, formerly of Decadence and DYS. Due to the reputations of its members, the band had a relatively high profile even before its debut; the zine writer Mike Gitter (who was also an A&R executive) wrote that "Slapshot is a great live act", before they had ever played in public.
Diverging from their counterparts in the Boston hardcore scene, Slapshot decided to make the first album a 24 track recording as opposed to the usual 8 or 16-track hardcore album. To reduce costs, they recorded at night and completed the album in four sessions. Back On The Map was released by Taang! Records in 1986.
The band's lineup underwent a number of changes in its first few years, although its sound remained consistent. Jordan Wood, formerly of S.T.P., joined as an additional guitarist, but took over bass guitar when Anastas left the band to continue his education. In July 1988, Jamie Sciarappa, former bass player of SS Decontrol, joined the band. He left in 1990 and was replaced by Chris Lauria.
Their 1993 album Blast Furnace was a move into sample-based industrial/metal/hardcore and only included one original member, Choke, along with a more metal-based backing band including members of Slaughter Shack. Slapshot toured Europe that spring, and on the second date of the tour, they recorded a live album in Berlin called Live At SO36. The following year, they recorded Unconsciousness in Chicago with Steve Albini, ex-member of Big Black and producer for Nirvana.

CARBONAS: Carbonas (Goner Records)

The much-anticipated third album from Atlanta pop-edged punkers THE CARBONAS.
“A taut, brilliant blast of both pop and punk. Given the record's running time, there's 'nary a wasted moment, riff or breath, as the band crams in a host of late-'70s/early-'80s Antipodean and East Coast rock influences, and strains those sounds through the Carbonas' distinctively greasy Southern sonic filter.”--Bob Mehr, Commercial Appeal

HUDSON FALCONS: (2008) Desire To Burn

In the late nineties cities like Boston and San Fransisco delivered top quality streetpunk, but there was one band from Jersey who ranked amongst The Forgotten, The Ducky Boys, Dropkick Murphys and One Man Army. And that band was (and is) the Hudson Falcons.
Compared to their previous work Desire to Burn has a slightly more rock’n’roll-approach to it (read: even more Springsteen in its sound). So alittle less punkrock and alittle more rock’n’roll, but not in bad way. People who liked the bands previous work know what I mean and know this is a good thing. I also see a couple of oldies on the tracklist which is nice. I’m not pointing at Evil van Howlin’ Wolf, Night by Springsteen or Got To Be A Better Way Home by Steven van Zandt, but at Desire to Burn, We’ll Survive and Drinkin’ With The Band which are songs the true Hudson Falcons fan already know, but these are new versions.
