Buzzcocks - Flat-Pack Philosophy (VBR)

The band was formed in 1975 by guitarist/singer Pete Shelley (real name Peter McNeish) and singer Howard Devoto (real name Howard Trafford), both students at Bolton Institute of Technology (now the University of Bolton). They shared common interests in electronic music, the idiosyncratic work of British musician Brian Eno, and American protopunk groups like The Stooges. In late 1975, Shelley and Devoto recruited a drummer and formed an embryonic version of Buzzcocks that never performed and which dissolved after a number of rehearsals.
After reading an NME review of the Sex Pistols' first performance, Shelley and Devoto travelled to London together to see the Sex Pistols in February 1976. Shelley and Devoto were impressed by what they saw and arranged for the Sex Pistols to come and perform at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester, in June 1976. Buzzcocks intended to play at this concert, but the other musicians dropped out, and Shelley and Devoto were unable to recruit other musicians in time for the gig. Once they had recruited bass guitarist Steve Diggle and drummer John Maher, they made their debut opening for the Sex Pistols' second Manchester concert in July 1976. A brief clip of Devoto-era Buzzcocks performing The Troggs "I Can't Control Myself" appears in the Punk: Attitude documentary directed by Don Letts. In September 1976 the band travelled to London to perform at the two-day 100 Club Punk Festival, organized by Malcolm McLaren. Other performers included: the Sex Pistols, Subway Sect, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Clash, The Vibrators, The Damned and the French band Stinky Toys.
By the end of the year, Buzzcocks had recorded and released a four-track EP, Spiral Scratch on their own New Hormones label, making them one of the first punk groups to establish an independent record label trailing only The Saints's "(I'm) Stranded". Produced by Martin Hannett, the music was roughly recorded, insistently repetitive, and energetic. "Boredom" announced punk's rebellion against the status quo while templating a strident musical minimalism (the guitar solo consisting of two repeated notes). The demos recorded while Devoto was in the band were later issued officially as Time's Up. Long available as a bootleg, this album includes the alternative takes of all the tracks from the Spiral Scratch EP as well as early version of tracks that later appeared on the official debut Another Music in a Different Kitchen. After a few months, Devoto left the group; he returned to school for a year, then formed Magazine. Pete Shelley continued as vocalist; his high-pitched, melodic singing stood in stark contrast to the gruff pub rock vocal stylings of many punk contemporaries. Diggle switched from bass to guitar, and Garth Smith joined on bass; Smith appeared on the band’s first Radio 1 Peel Session, in September 1977, but due to his alcoholism he was quickly replaced with Steve Garvey. This new line-up signed with United Artists Records.

Crispus Attucks - Crispus Attucks (VBR)

Crispus Attucks takes the focused rage of traditional D.C. hardcore and turns it up another notch. Loud and angry, the band's modern take on hardcore is a stark contrast to the melodic forms popular today.

Tear It Up - Taking You Down With Me (VBR)

This is the final release for Tear it Up, who I'm sure will be missed by many, and the CD version has the tracks from their split EP with Down in Flames added on along with a live set recorded in Maryland. For those uninitiated, these guys play straight hardcore/punk with no bullshit. You've got your gruff yelling, simple chord progressions, succinct lead riffs, ample tempo changes, etc. From super fast ragers like the 20-second "In Case You Didn't Notice, I'm a Martyr" to slower and longer tracks like the plodding title track (which is actually an instrumental complete with slightly heavier rhythms and tons of chaotic leads). The recording's not bad at all. The mix is really even and warm, with natural tones across the board. The guitar tone is pretty thin and lightly distorted, but it sounds perfect for their style, and lets the bass hold more weight. It sounds great for what they seem to have been going for, because most bands that shoot for a sound like this tend to fail on numerous levels... but not here. To my surprise the live set sounds pretty damn good, too. It's a little noisier, but the mastering of everything makes the live material fit in very nicely against the studio tracks, and the live mix is pretty fucking nice. I'm surprised... The layout's all in black and white with some band photos and one panel showing the cover from the Tear it Up/Down in Flames split 7", and the rest providing the lyrics and such. It looks alright, but it could definitely be more visually engaging. The lyrics are straightforward and deal with personal issues in the best possible way, just being honest and pissed: "Too many ideas not enough time, Too many thoughts fighting in my mind, Betrayal depression the usual themes, Striving for more than just being obscene..." I tend to get a little bored by this style of hardcore/punk in large doses, but there's only 18 minutes of studio material in this CD, of which only around 13 minutes is new, so they're able to hold my interest. The newer songs aren't quite as memorable or energetic as the split 7" tracks, as the chaotic tinges play more of a role, but nonetheless the bonus material does make this a keeper. The Undertones - The Story of The Undertones Teenage Kicks (DVDrip)

In 1975, in the North of Ireland, if live teenagers got together it would have been normal, even expected, for a riot to ensue - the outsider might not have been able to tell the difference standing in a crowded Casbah one Friday night...
Fronted with the unmistakable vocal style of lead singer Feargal Sharkey, with John and Damian O'Neill on guitars, Michael Bradley on bass, and Billy Doherty behind the drum kit, this is Teenage Kicks: The Story of the Undertones.
In his first pilgrimage to Derry, Northern Ireland, legendary BBC DJ John Peel meets the band behind his favourite pop song, Teenage Kicks. Revelling in his journey of discovery, John Peel is amazed at the band's apparent innocence. Reared in a town where the most abhorred social disgrace was to get above yourself. The Undertones simply tried not to take any of it too seriously.
The band parted ways in 1983 but 20 years down the line, The Undertones are still laid back. Re-forming to the delight of old and new fans, the band is prepared for it not to work - but it does. Damian says 'we didn't realise how good we were'... surely it's finally time the band grasped what we've known all along: The Undertones... absolutely bloody fantastic!

New Model Army - Bizarre Festival Cologne (Aug. 17, 1996) (DVD-RIP)

New Model Army's earliest material on their debut album Vengeance (1984) could probably with some justification be regarded as modern punk, albeit more melodic than the works of many of their classic counterparts.
Through the years, however, New Model Army have experimented with a great number of musical styles and nurtured numerous different inspirations. As a rock band they generally stand out of the crowd having a greater emphasis on the rhythm section, which often contains references to R&B. Their music is often regarded as intense, angry, and powerful, some might even say militant. However their repertoire is much wider and more subtle than that and also includes quieter, more emotive and softer material often performed acoustically. Thus it would be inaccurate to simply classify them as any of these genres. Rather one should recognise them for what they really are: a very versatile underground cult rock band with many different musical roots. They have toured and recorded constantly for over 26 years and continue to do so and are considered a seminal influence by many contemporary younger rock bands.[citation needed]
Their lyrics are always very poetic, but still manage to express political and humanitarian messages. Songs like "51st State" (lyrics written by Ashley Cartwright of 'The Shakes') earned the band cult status in movements against American imperialism, but made it more difficult for the band to tour the US. The contradiction and search for deeper truths explored in New Model Army's lyrics stem from lyricist Justin Sullivan's deeply religious (Quaker) and literary upbringing.
Lyrically Justin Sullivan has had a very close relationship with British artist, novelist, and poet Joolz Denby, who is often credited as a consultant or Muse and sometimes even co-writer. She is also responsible for the characteristic artwork on their covers, merchandise, t-shirts etc. The Arts Council/Yorkshire Museums & Galleries international touring exhibition of Denby's artworks for NMA and their memorabilia is entitled with some accuracy 'One Family, One Tribe - The art & Artefacts Of New Model Army', and is unique in its presentation of the art of a working rock band.
As a music group, New Model Army also stand out because they tend to see themselves as an organisation rather than a business as the name of their homepage, www.newmodelarmy.org, signifies.

Iggy & The Stooges - Live in Detroit (DVD-Rip)

What hit me from the opening song, "Loose", was the killer tone from Ron Asheton's guitar; talk about a trip in the "way back" machine. It's 1969 all over again. If the fuzz-wah guitar from "Funhouse" still gives you goosebumps, I guarantee this dvd will not disappoint.
We're talkin' flat out in your face Marshall stacks. What follows is a true Stooges fan dream come true. Again, the sound throughout the performance is excellent. The mix between the bass, drums, guitar & Iggy's voice is perfect. Oh, and let's not forget Mr. Pop. Iggy is peerless when it comes to live performances, and he proves himself again on this dvd. The camera work gives the viewer a real sense of what being at this concert in person must have been like. This dvd is not plagued with the constant camera angle changes every two seconds like on many concert performances. We get a good look at all the performers throughout the show; especially Iggy & Ron Asheton during his guitar solos. (By the way....I don't get the reviews slamming the camera work here? I quess the fact I have all the original Stooges albums on vinyl & don't watch MTV must have something to do with it). Also included is some great bonus material including performance by the band in a small New York record store. While the sound on the record store show is only fair, it's Iggy live! Come on, how many dvds are out there capturing what this man is all about! Anyone who is reading this must be a Iggy & The Stooges fan and debating the purchase of this dvd. Add this to your cart & buy it ASAP! Do not shy away from this one iota. You will not regret this purchase.

Nomeansno - People Choices

Nomeansno is a punk rock music group originally from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada and now located in Vancouver, British Columbia. The band has never had, nor have they seemed to pursue, strong mainstream success, but they do have a devoted underground following in North America and Europe. They tour fairly often on both continents and maintain a dedicated fan base. The band was formed in 1979 by brothers Rob Wright (bass guitar and vocals) and John Wright (drums, keyboards and vocals). Their name derives from an anti-date rape slogan. For their first four years the duo's music would seem to be influenced as much by jazz and progressive rock as punk rock. The musical press described their earliest recordings as "Devo on a jazz trip, Motörhead after art school, or Wire on psychotic steroids." Nomeansno have been credited with being an influence on, and perhaps even the genesis of, math rock.
The brothers Wright began recording as a two-piece in their parents' basement in 1979. These recordings, heard on their first two self-released 7"s, consisted of full rock band arrangements and had a new wave, warped-pop sound, different from subsequent recordings. When, in the early 1980s, the duo began gigging simply with bass, drums and vocals, the present form of their distinct sound slowly took shape. The songs they played in this period are documented on the Mama LP (re-released in 2004 on their own Wrong Records.)
In 1983, they added Andy Kerr (who played with John Wright in Infamous Scientists) on guitar and vocals. Kerr preferred pseudonymity and used such pseudonyms as "Buttercup" or "None-Of-Your-Fucking-Business". He brought a distinct hardcore punk edge to the group, and stayed until 1992. He is often erroneously credited for penning the lyrics of Nomeansno songs on which he sang, perhaps due to deliberately vague liner notes and frequent vocal moonlighting (Kerr sings lead or co-lead vocals on nearly half the songs on Wrong for example). Kerr's vocals were a necessity for a period of time in the 1980s when Rob Wright was recovering from nodules on his vocal cords. While Rob Wright is the band's lyricist and main songwriter, all members have contributed songs to Nomeansno records, and nearly all their material is credited to the entire band. Wrong is widely considered the band's best and most representative record ("The playing is incredibly skilled, with the Wright brothers effortlessly shifting tempos and time signatures and Kerr's razor sharp lyrics clicking right into place.").
After Kerr's departure, the Wright brothers recorded Why Do They Call Me Mr. Happy? as a duo. They subsequently recruited guitarist Tom Holliston from Showbusiness Giants and The Hanson Brothers, and have continued touring and releasing records, including Worldhood of the World (as such), Dance of the Headless Bourgeoisie, One, and most recently, All Roads Lead to Ausfahrt which was released on August 22, 2006. The album was released by AntAcidAudio in the United States and Southern Records in Europe.
The album One, released in 2000, featured "two stunning covers that only make sense coming from Nomeansno": a slow stoner rock-styled version of The Ramones' Beat on the Brat, and rather authentic fifteen-minute version of Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, (complete with electric piano and congas) featuring lyrics by Rob. Nomeansno initially released records with seminal punk rock record label Alternative Tentacles. This relationship ended in 2002. The band has since been reissuing old albums through Southern Records under their own Wrong Records imprint.

Flipper - Blown Chunks

Flipper was founded by former members of the Sleepers and Negative Trend. Founding member and original vocalist Ricky Williams was fired from the band before any recordings were made because he was deemed too messed up to remain in the band. The name is often seen to be a reference to thalidomide babies, such as the one featured on the cover of their early "Love Canal" single . In fact, the band was named Flipper after Ricky Williams' curious habit of naming all of his pets "Flipper", regardless of their species.
Flipper made their first recordings available in late 1979 via the SF Underground 7" compilation series released through Steve Tupper's newly-formed Subterranean Records. In 1981, a 7" comprising "Love Canal/Ha Ha Ha" followed, and the original lineup made two full-length studio albums on Subterranean, 1982's Generic and a 1984 follow up Gone Fishin'. Flipper's music was very shambolic and noisy, and often considered "slow" for a punk band of the time. In many early shows, the band had half the audience on stage with them singing backup vocals, and encouraged horn players to join them for their anthem, "Sex Bomb"; the crowding on stage usually knocked the stringed instruments out of tune. Guitarist Ted Falconi installed spikes in the head of his guitar to help prevent this, but blaring, out-of-tune dissonance became part of the band's signature sound.
Flipper was often as strongly in league with conceptual art and atonal music as with rock or punk. Years after the band's demise, its spray-painted dead fish logos were still visible in San Francisco (although signs on the city's Clipper Street have since been reverted from "Flipper Street"). Some[who?]say that Flipper's charm as a band lies in their ability to upset audiences, while attracting their undivided attention and curiosity at the same time. Their first single, "Love Canal"/"Ha Ha Ha", was widely derided, not only for its offensive cover art, but its bizarre sound, and yet sold many copies in the underground. This, in brief, was the band's concept: to be bad in ways that no band had ever been bad before. However, in true Flipper fashion, they even failed to fail, and their audience continued to grow as their outlandish approach appealed to those seeking something
different.
Two more singles on Subterranean followed, "Brainwash"/"Sex Bomb" and "Old Lady That Swallowed The Fly"/"Get Away" before Album (also known as Generic Flipper). Their debut LP sees the drone and blare molded into startlingly effective songs, with a lyrically bleak outlook, but humane vulnerability in the vocals, and flashes of genuine musicianship. It is widely considered a classic album of this era. The mayhem contained on the disc is infectious as Will Shatter repeats "Life! Life! Life is the only thing worth living for!" Similarly, "Sex Bomb" is a seven minute track with only one lyric, "She's a sex bomb, my baby, yeah.", intertwined with a raucous yet melodic musical interplay. The original release of the "Sex Bomb" single featured individually hand-made covers.
The follow-up studio album in 1984, Gone Fishin, was even darker and artier than the first LP. It featured the disorientating opening track "The Lights, The Sound, The Rhythm, The Noise", the haunting "Survivors of the Plague" and the decrying of the war machine in the song "Sacrifice". The multi-colored delivery step van pictured on the cover was also where Ted Falconi lived when the group was not on the road. The van, along with figures representing the band and their equipment could be cut out and folded with Subterranean offering extra covers through a small mail order fee.
In 1984, the ROIR cassette label released a live Flipper document of a CBGB's performance entitled "Blow'n Chunks" that became available on CD in 1990, and goes in and out of print. A 2001 reissue includes four outtakes from the live sessions. The performance included material from all phases of the band's existence thus far. John Lydon's Public Image Ltd was widely accused in the U.S. of stealing the cover art and concept of Flipper's album, Album. Consequently, Flipper entitled their 1986 double live album, Public Flipper Ltd. The album unfolded into a board game complete with a cutout spinner and game cards with Subterranean once again providing extra covers through mail order.
The original lineup began splintering after a long debauched period of touring, and singer and core member Will Shatter eventually died on December 9th, 1987 of a drug overdose after forming A3I (Any Three Initials, a punk outfit whose title mocked the prevalence of acronymic band names). Subterranean packaged the band's most popular recordings in a greatest hits collection titled "Sex Bomb Baby" released in 1987. The cassette edition and later CD rerelease featured three bonus tracks.-- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flipper_(band)

The Damned - Little Miss Disaster (Single)

The Damned played their first gig on 6 July 1976, supporting the Sex Pistols at the 100 Club. They were the first of the London punk bands to release a single on the independent record label Stiff Records. That single, "New Rose", was described by critic Ned Raggett as a "deathless anthem of nuclear-strength romantic angst". Vanian's deadpan intro — "Is she really going out with him?" — was borrowed from The Shangri-Las' 1964 "Leader of the Pack". The B-side of "New Rose" was a faster version of The Beatles' "Help!". Their first album, Damned Damned Damned, was the first album released by a British punk band, and it included several minor hits. In 1977, The Damned became the first British punk band to tour the United States. According to Brendan Mullen, founder of the Los Angeles club The Masque, the Damned's first tour of the U.S. found them favouring very fast tempos, helping to inspire the first wave of U.S. west coast hardcore punk.
In March 1977, The Damned opened for T.Rex on their final tour. The Damned then recruited a second guitarist, Lu Edmunds. This expanded line-up unsuccessfully tried to recruit the reclusive Syd Barrett to produce their second album Music For Pleasure. They settled for Barrett's Pink Floyd bandmate, Nick Mason, who they reported was generally uninterested in the task. Music for Pleasure flopped critically and commercially and the band broke up, ending their relationship with Stiff Records. The former members of the band worked on a series of brief side projects and solo recordings, all making little commercial impact. The Damned soon tentatively reformed, but without Brian James, who had been the groups main songwriter. Originally they performed as The Dimmed and The Doomed to avoid potential trademark problems. Captain Sensible switched to guitar and keyboards, and after a brief period with Lemmy of Hawkwind and Motörhead on bass for studio demos and a handful of live appearances, the bassist position was filled by Algy Ward, formerly of The Saints. The band signed a deal with Chiswick Records, and went back to the studio to record another album. Vanian's vocals had by now expanded from the high-baritone barks of the early records to a smooth, proto-Gothic crooning style. The Damned had established a dark, melodic style that was sometimes fast and loud, and at other times relaxed with dominant keyboards. The Damned released a series of singles leading up to 1979's Machine Gun Etiquette, and later a version of Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit", with a new Damned song, "Rabid", on the B-side.
Machine Gun Etiquette featured a strong 1960s garage rock influence, with Farfisa organ in several songs. Recording at Wessex Studios at the same time as The Clash were there to record London Calling, Joe Strummer and Mick Jones made an uncredited vocal appearance on the title track. Fans and critics were pleasantly surprised, and Machine Gun Etiquette received largely positive reviews; Ira Robbins and Jay Pattyn described it as "A great record by a band many had already counted out".

Dayglo Abortions - Holy Shiite

The Dayglo Abortions are a punk rock band from Victoria, British Columbia, whose style combines elements of punk, heavy metal and alternative rock. Their lyrics are informed by a complete disregard for societal norms. They formed in 1979 and released their first album in 1981. In 1988, an Ottawa, Ontario police officer instigated a criminal investigation of the Dayglos after his daughter brought home a copy of Here Today, Guano Tomorrow. Two albums featured in the resulting trial; the covers and the lyrical content being showcased by the prosecution. Here Today, Guano Tomorrow had a cover showing a picture of a hamster eating from a box of chocolates on nice satin sheets, along with a glass of wine. A gun points at the hamster, and the back cover shows a depiction of the resulting carnage.
The previous album, Feed Us A Fetus, was perhaps a little less graphic, with a depiction of a baked fetus on the table in front of Ronald and Nancy Reagan. This resulted in the criminal prosecution of Fringe Product, their label at the time, for distribution and possession with intent to distribute of obscene material—the first such prosecution since the offense entered the criminal code in 1959. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty. The Dayglos had musical revenge in the title song of their next album, Two Dogs Fucking, in which the supposed priggishness of Ottawa's public officials leads directly to the extinction of the human race. -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dayglo_Abortions

Thatcher on Acid - Curdled & Moondance @256k

Thatcher On Acid are an anarcho-punk band from the United Kingdom. They formed in Somerset during 1983. This is an awesome sounding after punk record with anarcho-political lyrics.2 albums on 1 cd,both of them lifted from their respective vinyl records, which exhibit some ticks and pops and a couple of skips here and there-nothing to worry about, though.Curdled, the studio album, date n/a,complete and brilliant lyrics supplied in an awesomely designed cd and sleeve. It's quite a departure from what someone might regard as crust, because it has a poppy and at the same time heavy side to it.The second album,10 songs in 1 cd track, features a live set from '87,with mostly the same songs but for one,in faster, rawer, heavier and very exciting versions, with excellent sound yet again.
The guitar work is out of this world,it's barb wired, hipnotic and intricate and minimalistic at the same time,no doubt this guy can play some serious guitar with a punk sound to it.On top of it all, this cd clocks in at an incredible76' + of serious KILLER music,no filler/higly recommended !!!!!!!

The Traitors - Traitors @256k

Beer + No Talent + Homosexual tension + Beer + Violence = Traitors. Members of this band went on to form other bands. Like The Atari Star, Alkaline Trio, Crimson Teeth, Rape-Ape, Das Kapital, Haymarket Riot, Bruised Pussy, Pegboy, Weather, Small Bathroom Fire, Glory Holes, Thingvilla, Aqua-TOT, Gasoline Fight and WHALER. Seach for yourself. Punk rock and roll blah blah blah ex-members of....blah blah blah beer guzzling blah blah blah. Look. The Traitors are Chicago's most feared band. They've been kicked out of the Empty Bottle, Metro TWICE, Fireside 11 times, Gilman St.(Fucking Hippie Punks, fuck that club membership my ass.), EMO'S, Elvis Room, The Mutiny, Fuse Box, Gold Dollar and Florida. They were "too much" for Jenny Jones' pro wrestling episode. Damn it, they've even kicked out their own members on occasion. They're Steve Albini and David Yow's favorite band. Maybe they're alien freakazoids, too, but they're definitely on a mission. With an atomic mix of violently raw rawkers that Estrus Records would kill to have and the fastest songs this side of 1978, the Traitors are just that, traitors to the world of "punk" they were weened on, so much so that they don't even call it punk. "What kind of music do they play?" LOUD AND FAST. The white belts (i.e. indie hipsters) don't want you to know The Traitors are out there, cause a Traitors show is too much fun and you'd give up on all that posturing indie drivel. More than that, the white belts don't want you to know THEY listen to the Traitors, because the Traitors are what every band wants to be: good music and good times, exactly why you, they, and everyone began to listen to the music in the first place. Go start a fight with the White-Belts!

J. Church *** Thread*** all 256kbps

J Church was a punk rock band fronted by Lance Hahn, which was formed in 1992. Hahn was responsible for the majority of writing and singing in the band and also played lead guitar. He can be seen as the sole creative force behind the band. Gardner Maxam played bass in the band until 1998, at which point the bass position became as the drums had always been; a quickly revolving door. Current members other than Lance include Ben White as well as Chris Pfeffer of Severed Head of State.
The group was named for the San Francisco Muni Metro line that Hahn took down Church Street to band practice (in the beginning) and to work every day. The band has an extensive discography including numerous singles and splits with fellow punk rock bands including Discount and Less Than Jake. On July 7, 2007, a benefit entitled "Let's Do It For Lance!" was released to help defray the cost of his medical bills.Lance Hahn was a punk rock history writer. He wrote many pieces for Maximum Rock 'n' Roll, the San Francisco music zine. Additionally, he also found time to run Honey Bear Records and work on a book compiling various writings on anarcho-punk bands. He died on October 21, 2007, aged 40, after falling into a coma nine days earlier due to complications from kidney dialysis.

Lord High Fixers - When the Revolution Comes @256k

The Austin, Texas-based garage-punk quintet Lord High Fixers was the mid-’90s project of longtime indie vet Tim Kerr, an alumnus of bands ranging from the Big Boys to the Monkeywrench (the blues-grunge side project of members of Mudhoney and other Seattle scenesters). Also comprised of vocalist Mike Carroll, guitarist Andy Wright, bassist Robbie Becklund and drummer Stefanie Friedman, Lord High Fixers issued a barrage of singles, EPs and compilation tracks before releasing the full-length When the Revolution Comes in early 1997. Is Your Club a Secret Weapon followed two years later.

Cletus - Horseplay Leads to Tragedy @256k

CLETUS' third full-length is by far their best work to date. With the same great production as their previous two LP's(thanks to veteran punk producer Mass Giorgini), "Horseplay..." is a non-stop hit machine. My personal favorites this time around are "I Don't Mind"(the most radio-friendly cut) and the scorching fast number "Don't Touch Me". But it's almost impossible to single out individual songs over the others because this whole record is so good! And to top it all off, seeing the band live is an amazing experience as well. This band is really at the top of their game, and we in South Carolina(CLETUS' home state) really hope this record brings them all the attention they deserve.

The Damned - So, Who's Paranoid

The Damned are an English rock band formed in London in 1976, notable for being the first punk rock band from England to release a single ("New Rose"), an album (Damned Damned Damned), and to tour the United States. The Damned later evolved into one of the forerunners of the gothic rock genre.
They have incorporated numerous styles into their music and image, including: garage rock, psychedelic rock, cabaret, and the theatrical rock of Screaming Lord Sutch and Alex Harvey. Lead singer Dave Vanian's vocal style has been described as similar to a crooner. The Damned have dissolved and reformed many times, with Vanian as the sole constant member, however, the lineups have always included either guitarist Captain Sensible and/or drummer Rat Scabies, who are both founding members. The current line-up includes Vanian, Captain Sensible, Monty Oxy Moron, Pinch and Stu West. Dave Vanian (David Lett), Captain Sensible (Raymond Burns) and Rat Scabies (Chris Millar) had been members of the band Masters of the Backside, which also included future Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde. Brian James (Brian Robertson) had been a member of the punk band London SS, who never played live but included musicians who later found fame in The Clash and Generation X. Scabies knew James through a failed audition as drummer for London SS. When the two decided to start their own band, James and Scabies had invited Sid Vicious and Dave Vanian to audition to be the singer of The Damned. Only Vanian showed up, and so he became the frontman of the band.

The Insurgence - Never Surrender (EP)

The Insurgence began in 2004 in the rain soaked city of Seattle, WA. They quickly gained a reputation as one of the hardest working bands in the Northwest. Gaining such attentioned landed them support slots for such heavy hitters as RANCID, DROPKICK MURPHY'S, CIRCLE JERKS, SUBHUMANS, US BOMBS, ZEKE, AVAIL, MISFITS, & STREET DOGS just to name a few.
It didnt take long for people to take notice and the guys were in the studio with legendary producer Jack Endino (Nirvana, Dwarves, Zeke, Valient Thorr) working on material for an upcoming full length. What was squeezed out of those sessions was also the four songs that appear here on the "Never Surrender" ep. Jumping out at you like nothing you've come accostomed to from the traditional "Seattle Sound", The Insurgence crank it up a notch, or two, or three, well quite frankly I think they crank it up to the proverbial 11. They also got the attention of booking agent Ron Martinez of Crawlspace Booking through Jibo's old friend and a&r guy for SOS Records Todd Radict (of the band The Radicts). That led to an opening slot in Seattle for THE CASUALTIES. This was the kind of crowd that thrives for the kind of brutality that The Insurgence deliver live. Keep your eyes peeled for tour dates and for one of the best live bands around today.
The release will be available in download form, cd, and multi-colored vinyl. There will also be ranomly inserted cds into the 7" version so you'll get both versions for the price of one, but only while supplies last.

Bluetip - Dischord No. 101 @ 256kbps

This, the debut CD from Washington DC's BLUETIP, is their best. The songs are upbeat, the guitar-playing is at turns intricate and heavy, and the melodies are great. The album starts off with the classic opening line "F--- this sh--!" and rarely lets up from there.
One needn't know it to enjoy the CD, but BLUETIP are part of a small nexus of other DC hardcore bands: SWIZ, FURY, and SWEETBELLY FREAKDOWN, for example. In fact, BLUETIP are essentially DC hardcore band SWIZ minus that band's vocalist, Shawn Brown. SWIZ lead guitarist Jason Farrell [who is also a graphic designer in real life, and has designed all of BLUETIP's album covers, logos, etc.] steps up to the plate as vocalist for this and all other BLUETIP albums; his vocals are mature, melodic, and reveal a surprising, Cher-like, Virginian drawl that actually works quite well with the music [Check out how he sings the last few lines of "Texas 10 West" to see what I mean]. The band's sound has moved out of the hardcore territory inhabited by SWIZ and is informed by the success of Dischord bands FUGAZI, JAWBOX, and SHUDDER TO THINK. In fact, Ian MacKaye of FUGAZI produced BLUETIP's "Dischord No. 101" here--and it shows. The same high-pitched, wailing, dissonant, atonal guitar work that is so often encountered in FUGAZI can also be heard here, but it's constantly tempered by solid power-chord riffing, acknowledging the band's hardcore roots. The dugga-dugga factor Farrell played up when in SWIZ is gone for the most, part, though, and is replaced with rapid down-stroking. "Dischord No. 101" is probably the strongest release to come out of Dischord's late 1990s catalogue. But while SHUDDER TO THINK and JAWBOX left Dischord to go onto major labels, BLUETIP never took off, though they very well could have; they're just as good as those two bands, and far superior to most of the stuff Dischord was releasing at the time of this LP.
The songs "Precious," "Nickelback," "Texas 10 West," and "Gainer" are the real barnstormers on this album, but even the quieter ones don't bore. My only complaint about the album is that, like a lot of Dischord releases from the 1990s, it is recorded at low-ish volume, so that you have to turn it up sort of high just to hear it at a decent volume. That is, while most CDs I can hear just fine at let's say volume 5 [on the 1 - 10 scale], most Dischord CDs from this period I have to crank up an extra few notches to hear adequately. This is true with FUGAZI's "Repeater" and with NATION OF ULYSSES' "13 Point Program" albums as well. This is just a minor complaint, but I'm an audiophile so things like this jump out at me every now and then. If you like post-hardcore rock in the vein of QUICKSAND, SEAWEED, JAWBOX, FUGAZI, etc., then you simply can't go wrong with this.

THE QUEERS --- thread --- all 320kbps

The Queers are an American pop punk band formed in 1982 by Portsmouth, New Hampshire native Joe King (A.K.A. Joe Queer). Supposedly, the name 'Queers' was used simply to poke fun at what he called the "Art Fag" community in New Hampshire. The band originally broke up in 1984, but reformed with Joe Queer and a new line-up in 1990. That year, the band signed with Shakin' Street Records and released their first album Grow Up. The album earned the band notoriety within New England, but with the release of their next album 1993's Love Songs for the Retarded, on Lookout! Records, their following grew to larger proportions. In 2006, after releasing six albums on Lookout!, the band rescinded their master rights from the label, citing breach of contract over unpaid royalties. Later that year they signed with Asian Man Records. The Queers play a Ramones-derived style of pop punk. Much like the Ramones, common lyrical themes are girls, drugs, alcohol and having fun. Musically the band deviates slightly from the driving rhythm guitar sound of the Ramones and augments their songs with harmony vocals, handclaps, keyboards and guitar solos. They have been described as "The Ramones meets The Beach Boys". Ben Weasel of Screeching Weasel frequently collaborates with Joe Queer to write their songs. The band are well known for the variety of cover versions they include on their records and in live appearances. Bands/artists covered by The Queers include The Beach Boys, The Ramones (including a complete re-recording of the Rocket to Russia album), The Mr T Experience, Skeeter Davis, The Fantastic Baggys, The Who, The Undertones, The Hobos, Tommy James and The Shondells, Helen Love and many more.-- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Queers

V.A. - Freakout Episode 2

Lookout! Freakout, Vol. 2 assembles some of the better-known artists from the Lookout label's roster of punk rock bands and some of their most representative songs. Highlights include the Donnas' "Do You Wanna Hit It," Bratmobile's "90s Nomad," Bis' "Dead Wrestlers," Screeching Weasel's "Pauline," the Mr. T Experience's "Mr. Ramones," and American Steel's "Turn It Out," to name a few. A great introduction to the punk label and its many talented bands. Since these are previously released songs, anyone who owns a lot of Lookout LPs might want to consider skipping this, though -- there's a good chance you may already own many of these songs.

V.A. - Someone's Gonna Get Their Head To Believe in Something

Culled almost entirely from two important, early-'80s So-Cal punk compilations, this CD is red hot a decade later. This is 15/18ths of 1982's Someone Got Their Head Kicked In (all but the three Blades tracks, which though good were the least of the LP), and 10/16ths of 1984's Something to Believe In (missing are the tracks by Unwanted -- L.A.'s, not 1977 London's -- Tourists, Youth Youth Youth, Young Lions, Zeroption, and D.O.A.; some good, some eh, though D.O.A.'s hot, funny "Tits on the Beach" -- another look at that same subject as the Stranglers' "Peaches" -- is sadly missed). Though it's likely an issue of rights to the material for re-release, it would have been better to reissue the two LPs as was, rather than stripping them of nine tracks to replace them with six songs (albeit equally good ones) from later BYO releases. From Head Kicked In, the two old, pre-first LP demos by the Adolescents are vital, great-sounding punk history, plus the 1982 Social Distortion's otherwise unknown masher "Mass Hysteria," a couple of the finest Youth Brigade songs -- including "Look in the Mirror," which should have made one of the two versions of its debut LP Sound and Fury the next year. The two tracks by the Joneses (the L.A. Dolls' rock, not the later crap Joneses) are fun, Aggression still rocks, and Battallion of Saints shreds. From Something, there's no arguing with Channel 3's proud punk-pop "Indian Summer," which came just before the bandmembers became alcoholics and got into the Alarm. And best of all, the Nils' stunning "Scratches and Needles," one of the defining moments by Montreal's best band ever, is so good it was the opening track on that LP despite the band's obscurity (they should've used the original version from the stupidly limited-edition, 300-print Now EP cassette, which is even more awesome). Youth Brigade (again) and Personality Crisis are terrific. If you care at all about U.S. classic punk, this is a super guide because it has so many great songs in one place by so many great bands. The BYO's Stern brothers (of Youth Brigade) had ears for melodies and tunes were abundant in L.A. (and Canada) back then, and that's why it's dated well. ~~ by Jack Rabid, The Big Takeover, allmusic.com

Tracks
Violence (Youth Brigade) - Intense (Energy Agression) - Beefmasters (Battalion of Saints) - Pil Box (Joneses) - In the Night (Bad Religion) - Dear John Letter (Agression) - No More Lies (Battalion Of saints) - Who is who (Adolescents) - Mass Hysteria (Social Distortion) - Graveyeard Rock (Joneses) - Boys in the Brigade (Youth Brigade) - Rat Race (Agression) - Wrecking Crew (Adolescents) - Look in the Mirror (Youth Brigade) - Cops are Out (Battalion Of Saints) - Scratches Needless (NILS) - Silent Scream (Rigor Mortis) - History (Big Boys) - Pyramids (Kraut) - Care (Youth Brigade) - Victims Of The Womanizer (SNFU) - Piss on You Personality (Crisis) - Indian Summer (Channel 3) - Out of Touch (7 Seconds) - Foreign Policy (Stretch Marks) - San Francisco (Smarties) - The War Goes On (Hungry for What) - Tragedy In E (Jr. Gone Wild) - Hey Pachuco (Royal Crown Revue) - Who's Life is It Anyway (Thats It) - One In Five (Youth Brigade).

V.A. - Brain Candy Music Matador

The soundtrack to the The Kids in the Hall's motion picture Brain Candy combines tracks by members of the irreverent Canadian comedy troupe with generous performances by indie rock superstars such as Guided By Voices, Yo La Tengo, and Liz Phair. The album leads off with the metal sludge of "Some Days It's Dark" by Death Lurks, a band consisting of Bruce McCulloch and the Odds that is also represented by the markedly more pleasant "Happiness Pie," a sugary ode to the miracle drug that is the movie's focal point. Not to be outdone, Scott Thompson performs his piece "I'm Gay," which is also featured prominently in Brain Candy. The serious musical highlights are the quirky but catchy "Painted Soldiers" by Pavement, Matthew Sweet's shining, hook-laden "Happiness," and They Might Be Giants' "Spiraling Shape." Also included is Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet's "Having an Average Weekend," which Kids in the Hall fans will recognize as the Kids' theme song.

The Lawrence Arms - The Greatest Story Ever Told

The band's records and touring schedule had brought them to the attention of Fat Mike of NOFX, who signed them to his Fat Wreck Chords label in late 2001. Their first release on the label was a 7" vinyl single, part of the label's "Fat Club" series of 7" records. This was followed by the full-length album Apathy and Exhaustion, released in 2002. The album spawned the band's second music video, for the song "Porno and Snuff Films," and they toured extensively with NOFX and other bands from the Fat label.
Their next album was 2003's The Greatest Story Ever Told. Their most ambitious album to date, it demonstrated the band members' continued growth as musicians and songwriters and included extensive footnotes to the lyrics detailing their many references to history, literature and pop culture. It also showed an evolution in the band's vocal style. Kelly had sung most of the vocals on their first album, while on subsequent releases he and McCaughan had split vocal duties almost equally from one song to the next, with Kelly's voice tending to sound more harsh and urgent while McCaughan's sounds more relaxed and melodic. With this release, however, the two began to move towards more of a duet style of singing which would feature prominently on their next album. Extensive touring following the album's release saw the band on the road for much of 2003 and 2004. They also contributed a song to the Fat Wreck Chords Rock Against Bush, Vol. 2 compilation, leading up to the 2004 presidential election and became involved with the Punk Voter campaign.
The Lawrence Arms also played a portion of the 2004 Warped Tour, but the band's attitude towards the tour resulted in controversy. In a 2006 interview, Kelly claimed that the band "did like seven days of it and we got kicked off it, banned for life" for "pointing out the obvious flaws of the Warped Tour, on stage while the people running the Warped Tour were watching us."[1] When asked his opinion of the tour, Kelly responded:
“ Warped Tour, it’s destroying the economy of DIY; and it’s doing it very methodically and very successfully in that [the] summer touring season used to involve a bunch of bands, like Alkaline Trio for example, jumping on buses and taking smaller bands, like us and The Black Maria for example, on tour. There would be all these bands that would do that, so all these support bands would have great tours to go on. Kids in every town would have a bunch of different shows to go see, like over the summer. Small clubs would have big, good shows at least once a week if not twice a week, three times a week; and kids would have stuff to do. Now, all those big bands go on the Warped Tour. When they come to town, it’s for one day. It’s in a band shell, small clubs all across the US are closing down, they can’t afford to be open. Bands like us have to tour against the Warped Tour, which sucks; or tour on the Warped Tour, which sucks even more.[1] ”
He further likened the experience of Warped Tour to "going to a band shell and buying twelve dollar bottles of water and standing there watching your favorite band play from like a million feet away." He also criticized the tour's effect on punk rock and independent music as a whole: "Now people talk about the Warped Tour like it’s the greatest thing to ever happen to punk rock, it’s not the greatest thing to ever happen to punk rock - it’s single handedly dismantling the whole thing we’ve been fucking building for all this time and nobody gives a fuck...And that’s why it’s the worst thing to ever happen to punk rock, or DIY music in general."[1] Their next album, 2006's Oh! Calcutta!, included a hidden track entitled "Warped Summer Extravaganza (Major Excellent)" referencing their attitude towards the tour.

Skatalites - Hi-Bop Ska

The founders of Skatalites were Tommy McCook (died 1998), Rolando Alphonso (died 1998), Lloyd Brevett, Lloyd Knibb, Lester Sterling, Don Drummond (died 1969), Jah Jerry Haynes (died 2007), Jackie Mittoo (died 1990), Johnny Moore (died 2008), Jackie Opel (died 1970). These nine musicians started to play together from 1955, when Kingston's recording studios started to develop. Tommy McCook was the first member of the band to record, though not for commercial release: he played with Don Hitchman's Group in 1953. Archie Lindo asked Hitchman to play few tunes for his pioneer radio station, "ZQI", on their new equipment. Soon after that, sound system pioneer Stanley Motta began to operate his studio, where he recorded calypso and mento that were released on 78's. Rolando Alphonso was one of the first to record with him, probably in 1954.Though McCook was the first in the band to record, he did not participate in recording sessions with other eight musicians. He left Jamaica in 1954 for a jazz gig at the Zanzibar Club in Nassau, Bahamas. He returned to Jamaica in June of 1962, and began playing regular jazz sessions around Kingston.
Coxsone Dodd searched jazz players around Kingston and was impressed by McCook's playing. Tommy McCook heard some ska, but initially resisted Coxsone Dodd's offers to record and to lead a studio group, because he was a committed jazzman. In 1962 Dodd released I Cover The Waterfront (Port-O-Jam) with Roland Aplhonso and Don Drummond, who did solo and brass sections. In 1963 he released Jazz Jamaica From the Workshop (Port-O-Jam/Studio One), where McCook played first time since returning to Jamaica. Don Drummond has two tunes on Jazz Jamaica and McCook's has one, "The Answer".

The Lawrence Arms - Apathy and Exhaustion

The Lawrence Arms are an American punk rock band from Chicago, Illinois, formed in 1999 and currently recording for Fat Wreck Chords. They have released five full-length albums and toured extensively. Their music and lyrics juxtapose references from history and literature with Americanpop culture.Prior to forming the Lawrence Arms, the three band members were active in other Chicago -area bands. Brendan Kelly had played in the ska punk band Slapstick alongside Dan Andriano, who would later join Alkaline Trio (the two would reunite in 2004 to form The Falcon). Chris McCaughan had played in Tricky Dick before joining Kelly in The Broadways. McCaughan and Kelly also shared an apartment together on Chicago's north side. Neil Hennessy, meanwhile, had played in a band called Baxter. Both Slapstick and the Broadways released albums on Asian Man Records, a small record label based in Monte Sereno, California that would later release albums by the Lawrence Arms. The three musicians came together to form the Lawrence Arms in 1999, taking their name from the apartment complex in which Kelly and McCaughan had lived before being evicted in the middle of the night.
Although punk rock bands in their infancy generally start out by releasing EPs and 7" vinyl singles, the band members used their existing relationship with Asian Man Records to immediately begin recording a full-length album, A Guided Tour of Chicago, which was released later that year. A second album, Ghost Stories, followed in 2000. Both albums focused heavily on the members' own stories of growing up and living in Chicago.
The band's next two releases were split EPs with other bands. The first, a split with Shady View Terrace, was released in 2000 and was their first release to be recorded by Matt Allison, who would continue to record and produce all of their subsequent releases. A second EP, Present Day Memories, was released in 2001 and was a split with the band The Chinkees.

Conflict - There's No Power Without Control @VBR

Anarchy in the U.K., indeed -- such was the ultimate goal for the fiercely political British punk band Conflict, a group fueled by its hatred of Thatcher's England, the media, the military, and the general status quo of late 20th century life. Conflict played its first gig in 1981 led by vocalist Colin Jerwood, who would remain one of the group's few constants throughout its fluid existence. Much more permanent was the group's political agenda, which was already firmly ensconced by the release of their 1983 debut It's Time to See Who's Who; songs took on topics like Vietnam, nuclear arms, and vegetarianism. The animal liberation movement, which would remain one of Conflict's central concerns throughout their career, returned to the fore on the next year's Increase the Pressure, with its cover art's focus on the Save the Seals fight.
The band's increased political involvement, often in support of unpopular causes, led a number of their concerts to be broken up by the police; a 1987 appearance at the Brixton Academy even ended in widescale rioting (as documented on the live record Turning Rebellion Into Money, named after a Clash lyric). At about the same time, ex-Crass member Steve Ignorant joined Conflict as a joint vocalist. His tenure ended in 1989, the year the band released three different records: The Final Conflict, Against All Odds, and Standard Issue 82-87, a compilation of rare singles and album cuts. After four years of inactivity, Conflict released a single in 1993, followed later in the year by the album Conclusion. The record's title proved premature, however; by 1996, the group was back on tour, in support of a re-recorded, re-titled, and re-issued It's Time to See Who's Who Now.

Angelic Upstarts - The Last Tango in Moscow @VBR

Formed in South Shields, England in 1977, the Angelic Upstarts was one of the period's most politically-charged and thought-provoking groups; though technically a skinhead band, their records attacked the racism and fascism so prevalent throughout the skinhead community, and while also technically a punk unit, their music quickly evolved beyond the movement's limited scope.

Angelic Upstarts - Reason Why ? @VBR

The Angelic Upstarts are an anti-fascist, socialist working class Oi! punk and skinhead band formed in South Shields, North-East England in 1977. More than two decades after its release, their debut single, "The Murder Of Liddle Towers", was included in Mojo magazine’s list of the best punk rock singles of all time. The original lineup was Thomas Mensforth (Mensi) on vocals, Ray Cowie (Mond) on guitar, Steve Forsten on bass guitar, and Decca Wade on drums. The band has reformed and split a few times, and former members include bassists Ronnie Wooden, Glyn Warren, Tony Feedback, Ronnie Rocker and Max Splodge (who also had a stint playing drums). Other drummers have included Sticks (who later joined Cockney Rejects), Paul Thompson (ex-Roxy Music) and Chris White. Wade rejoined the band for a few years before leaving again. Hayes originally joined the band as second guitarist until Mond left, leaving Hayes as the only guitarist. Mensi was the only original member still in the band.
In August 2006, Mensi announced he was resigning, however he requested that the band continue with Chris Wright (of the band Crashed Out) on vocals. The band's lineup became Wright on vocals, Dickie Hammond on guitar, Neil Newton on guitar, Gaz Stoker on bass and Wade on drums. In the latter part of 2007, Mensi rejoined the band and the lineup became Mensi on vocals, Stoker on bass, Hammon on guitar, Newton on guitar and Brett Mulvaney on drums.

Sex Pistols - The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle @320kbps

An odd, occasionally hilarious, hodge-podge from those notorious yobs of the late seventies that transcends vulgarity and low brow humor and drifts into the realm of the truly bizarre. Certain tracks will raise questions of not only how much the band was involved, but how these tracks came into existence, but if your taste veers into warped humor, you'll probably have a lot of fun along the way. There's a handful of loud, gritty Pistol's type punk with Rotton's notorious scathing vocals. Some are covers, (e.g.) "Substitute", "(I'm not your) Stepping Stone", some are originals, "I Wanna Be Me", "Belson Was A Gas" (for bad taste fans), and there's also an alternate take, though not much different from the original version, of "Anarchy In the U.K.". Actually there are several different versions of Anarchy, and here is were things get weird, one is part of a disco medley and the other is the French accordion version. Who's responsible for this is unclear. Guitarist Steve Jones and drummer Paul Cook, who originally started the group and expected little more than your standard hard rock band, put in a couple of good originals. The songs "Silly Thing" and "Lonely Boy", not surprisingly, sound closer to standard, crude hard rock. Infamous dervish nitwit Sid Vicious does a trio of surprisingly great covers. He covers two Eddie Cochran numbers ("Something Else" and "C'mon Everybody") and his "singing" has an on target sly but energetic rockabilly delivery, which sounds great with Steve Jones' crude (but often under appreciated) guitar playing. Vicious also turns in a humorous parody of Paul Anka's "My Way". Another great track is Steve Jones' arrangement of an old sea shanty, complete with orchestral backing (Once again, we wonder, how and whom?) titled "Frigging in the Rigging". Be forewarned, the song is credited as traditional and if the lyrics are all original, amusingly, this centuries old sea shanty puts any of the Pistol's original material to shame in the vulgarity department. This track, along with Sid's "My Way", also shows Jones' thick Chuck Berry riff guitar style sounds great with a string section (Who'da thunk?). Also, there's a great track to annoy music "purists" with, a hilariously botched "Johnny B. Goode" and Modern Lovers "RoadRunner" medley recorded live in the studio, presumably from the early days. The best moments are when Jones stumbles over a generic Chuck Berry riff, Rotten exclaims "Oh god, I hate songs like that" and Rotten at one point forgetting the words starts screaming "Stop it, that's f***ing awful! Torrtuure! Elsewhere on the album there's a version of "Rock Around The Clock" with hiccuping strangled unintelligible vocals. You'll probably surmise the album is going to be a bit unusual from the first track. A rasping voice claiming to be band manager Malcolm McLaren, though the voice sounds more like Gollum from Tolkien's "The Lord of The Rings", explaining how the Sex Pistols were a plot to swindle the Rock and Roll music industry. To top it off, a chamber orchestra plays "God Save the Queen" in the background. People expecting only the raging bile of the "Never Mind the Bollocks" album may be disappointed (as well as confused), but I always get a laugh out of it.~~ By David L. Mccabe

Sex Pistols - There is No Future

The Sex Pistols are an English punk rock band that formed in London in 1975. The band originally comprised vocalist Johnny Rotten, guitarist Steve Jones, drummer Paul Cook and bassist Glen Matlock. Matlock was replaced by Sid Vicious in early 1977. The Sex Pistols are widely credited with initiating the punk movement in the United Kingdom and creating the first generation gap within rock and roll. Although their initial career lasted only three years and produced only four singles and one studio album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, the group has been described by the BBC as "the definitive English punk rock band."
The Sex Pistols emerged as a response to the bombastic progressive rock and sentimental pop music that predominated in the mid-1970s. Under the guidance of impresario Malcolm McLaren, the band created controversies which captivated Britain, but often eclipsed their music.[6] Their concerts repeatedly faced difficulties with organisers and authorities, and public appearances often ended in mayhem. Their 1977 single "God Save the Queen" was regarded as an attack on the monarchy and British nationalism. In January 1978, at the end of a turbulent US tour, Rotten left the band and announced its breakup. Over the next several months, the three other band members recorded songs for McLaren's film version of the Sex Pistols' story, The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle. Vicious died of a heroin overdose in February 1979. In 1996, Rotten, Jones, Cook and Matlock reunited for the Filthy Lucre Tour; they staged two further reunion shows in 2002, and undertook tours in 2003, 2007 and 2008. On 24 February 2006, the Sex Pistols were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but they refused to attend the ceremony, calling the museum "a piss stain".

Scared Of Chaka - Masonic Youth

Scared Of Chaka were a punk rock band based in Albuquerque, New Mexico who formed in 1993 by guitarist/vocalist David Yanul Hernandez, bassist Dameon Waggoner, and drummer Jeff Jones who was later replaced by Ron Skrasek. The band played a Dickies inspired mix of garage and pop-punk, following in the footsteps of local Albuquerque act the Drags. The band released a number of full lengths, 7" EPs, and split records throughout their career for labels like 702 Records, Empty Records, Dirtnap Records and Hopeless spin off Sub City Records. With the release of 2001's Crossing with Switchblades the band called it quits. The band will be and has been playing a number of reunion shows in 2008. On September 20 they will be performing with Dillinger Four as part of the inaugural year of Madison's Forward Music Fest.Following the break up of Scared of Chaka, Dave Hernandez formed Broadcast Oblivion in 2002 with Coady Willis (of Murder City Devils, Dead Low Tide and Big Business) and Andrew Church (of The Droo Church and The Supersuckers).
Hernandez had previously performed in projects with James Mercer, who went on to form popular indie rock act The Shins (Scared of Chaka also released a split 7" with the pre-Shins act Flake Music). The original lineup of The Shins featured Hernandez on Bass. After a year, however, he left the band to pursue a personal relationship in New York. [1] In 2003 when Shins bassist Neal Langford left the group, Hernandez re-joined the Shins as a bassist. He now resides along with the rest of the band in Portland, Oregon.
Scared of Chaka's music was influential in the U.S. garage / punk rock scene. Current bands that have continued similar musical threads, such as the Riverboat Gamblers and Noise Noise Noise have cited Scared of Chaka as an influence.

The Suicided Machines - The Suicide Machines

The Suicide Machines were an American punk rock band formed in March 1991 in Detroit, Michigan and disbanded in May of 2006. During the course of their career the band released six full-length albums on the labels Hollywood Records and Side One Dummy Records. Though they experienced several lineup changes over the years, founding members Jason Navarro and Dan Lukacinsky remained regular fixtures.
The band's musical style initially blended elements of punk rock, ska, and hardcore into a genre popularly known as ska punk or "ska-core," which characterized their first two albums. During the middle of their career they shifted gears, moving away from this sound and producing two albums with a heavy pop rock influence. Their final two albums moved back towards their mid-1990s style, bringing back heavy ska punk and hardcore elements.
Despite being signed to a major record label for their first four albums, The Suicide Machines did not experience significant mainstream success. However, they did achieve a relatively high level of underground recognition through relentless touring, including multiple performances on the Warped Tour. This trend continued when the band moved to an independent label for their last four years, before their breakup brought an abrupt end to the band's career.
