First time on CD for this album by the Punk/Glam Rock act. The album was recorded in 1979 and initially only released in Japan until 1981, when a UK version was finally issued. The CD features bonus material while the DVD features live and studio sessions plus an interview with the band. Cuddly Toys have recently reformed and will be touring in support of this release. Formed in early 1977. Originally going to be called The Solicitors they finally settled on the suitably shocking Raped. Featuring a guitarist with an unspellable first name who auditioned for the Pistols, a totally straight bass player who last played for Steppenwolf, A bizzare Japanese cross dressing drummer and the focal point of the band a spiky blonde haired, Iggy loving Brian Connelly cum Billy Idol look alike. Its curious that a movement that threw up swastikas as a fashion statement, gave us songs like 'Belsen Was A Gas' and bands like the 'Moors Murderers' could get so upset over a band that called itself 'Raped'. These boys did everything they could to ensure that they got nowhere while gaining massive publicity. From their name to the names of their songs and their image these boys pissed people off. In Mid 77 when everyone was trying to look like street punk these were dressing like their glam heroes in makeup. Particularly guilty was the Japanese drummer Paddy Fields who favoured pink and purple and blonde hair ,high heels, tights and hot pants which he could probably get away with hiding behind a drum kit !!! Frequent scams gave them publicity if nothing else. Deliberately playing on their sexuality ( kissing on stage and claiming bisexuality- Sean and Faebhean) they claimed in the Ripped & Torn interview that Faebhean was gay or that he was descended from Aleister Crowley or playing a gig in front of kids..
Unable to secure a recording contract they became part of the core of bands at that time that included Siouxsie, The Ants and The Slits who were deemed unsignable and commercial suicide. At the same time they attracted the same sort of fanatical following and had good press in the fanzines like Ripped & Torn, In The City and Trick. With this being the case their manager formed a record company and released two singles which kind of proved the above as they struggled to against the weight of negative publicity. Their first record said it all 'Not available in WH Smiths Boots or Woolies' yet was a good seller. When the resulting publicity failed to bring reward the name ' Raped' was a millstone around their necks.
As a result of this they changed their name to Cuddly Toys as well as their image and style of music. With Purcel's looks and glammy band image it was no suprise that they were quite big in Japan who seem to go for androgeny in a big way and I think they had success there along the way releasing two albums with a few more band twists and turns. In a way they missed the New Romantic /glammy years of the early eighties which they were probably more suited.
In an email to Punk 77 Faebhean writes "Cuddly Toys dissolved in 1980-81 - mainly due to the Japanese company running off with the money we had put to one side to 'buy' us into the British and Japanese charts!!! We were going to be managed by Marc Bolan but he died in the famous car crash. Paddy went back to Japan and changed sex (!) Sean died of a brain tumour 3 years ago, Tony became a market gardener! and I ...well, I'll tell you some day! Lots of love.......Faebhean Kwest

Their first gig was at the Tunbridge Wells annual carnival, at which they got arrested. This led to their first press coverage with the local newspaper describing their gig as a 'cacophony of noise'. In 1981, Gooky (who left the same year), Hopper and Clive "Winston" Blake came in on lead guitar, drums and bass respectively, although Hopper was quickly replaced with PJ ('Persian John') (real name Djahanshah Aghssa). They managed to get a slot in The Exploited's Apocalypse tour, along with Chron Gen and Anti Pasti. This led to them signing to John Curd's record label WXYZ, with Curd and Chris Gabrin co-managing the band. Later that year, they also opened for The Damned on a short tour round the north of England and Scotland. November 1981 saw the release of their first single, a cover version of Ralph McTell's "Streets of London". This single later became the group's anthem, "So What" on the B-side. In 1982, they took part in the 'So What Tour' in the company of such groups as Chelsea, Chron Gen and the Defects, and the release of their debut album We Are...The League. However, the Obscene Publications Squad seized all copies of their records, which were removed from retailers and they were banned from TV and radio. In addition, they were removed from the Top Of The Pops studio because Animal was carrying a 3ft axe around with him. The year finished with the 'Hardcore Storms America' tour with the UK Subs.
Gilly (real name Mark Gilham) joined the band in 1983 as an extra guitarist, which according to the bands website,, was because Magoo was drinking heavily and was often unable to carry out his commitments as guitarist. The band went to Yugoslavia to record a live album, called Live In Yugoslavia, but this was dogged by problems with the authorities insisting that references that Animal had made about their recently deceased president Tito be removed from the master tapes, and any language which they deemed to be offensive be bleeped.

The band formed in early 1978, with an original line-up of Phil Stanton (vocals), Rob "Spike" Harrington (guitar and vocals), Andy Lealand (guitar), Mark "Shark" Harris (drums), and Mark "Savage" Parsons (bass guitar). Parsons and Stanton left in 1979, with Spike moving to lead vocals, and Lealand's girlfriend Louise Wright joining on bass. Influenced by the likes of the Sex Pistols, The Clash, and The Ramones, the band started off covering punk rock hits and soon started to compose their own material. They were the second band signed to Chris Berry's No Future Records label, and their debut release, the double A-sided Police story/Killing machine was released September 28, 1981. It reached #5 on the UK Indie Chart, on the back of a tour with label-mates Blitz, and with strong support from Sounds writer Garry Bushell. Following the success of this single, The Partisans were included on the third volume of Bushell's Oi! compilation series Carry On Oi!, which reached #60 on the UK Album Chart, and won the band gig slots with Blitz, Peter and the Test Tube Babies and The Ejected, as well as a 'No Future' night at London's Zig Zag Club with Red Alert, The Lombardos, and Peter and the Test Tube Babies.
The band released its second single, 17 Years of Hell, on May 27, 1982, peaking at #2 on the Indie Charts. This was followed by their self-titled debut LP, released in February 1983. It hit #5 in the Indie Chart and #1 in the Punk Chart, amid considerable critical acclaim from the national press and the underground fanzine culture. After the departure of Louise Wright, the remaining members relocated to Bayswater in West London, with new bassist Dave Parsons to relaunch the band. Their next release was the three-track "Blind Ambition" EP on Cloak & Dagger Records, which peaked at #23 on the Indie Chart, and got played on Prime Time Radio 1. The LP, Time Was Right, followed in 1984, described as "The Professionals meets The Clash," and reaching #20 in the Indie Chart. The album featured live recordings from a gig at the Brixton Ace, at which The Partisans supported Anthrax, Lost Cherrees, Conflict and others. The band split up in 1984. Dave Parsons later found chart success with Transvision Vamp and is now in Bush. Shark took a filmmaking course, and Rob moved to Scandinavia. The latter two recorded one more session in late 1989 for Link Records under the name Agent Orange. In the late 1990s Lealand and Harrington reformed the band along with two of Lealand's Swedish friends, Magnus Neundorff and Mikael "Gustav" Gustavsson. The band signed to American label TKO who issued the "So Neat" single in 2001, followed by a new full-length CD in 2004 (Idiot Nation). Currently the band are writing and recording new material.

The Bruisers were pioneers of the American streetpunk/oi! movement, formed in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1988. The original lineup included: Al Barr (vocals, now the lead singer of the Boston Celtic punk band Dropkick Murphys), Scotty Davies (bass), Jeff Morris (guitar) and Rodger Shosa (drums). Morris is now a guitarist and lead vocalist for Death & Taxes, and a guitarist for Mark Lind & the Unloved. The first band members were skinheads (although not white power skinheads). After a few short years and lineup changes, the band and their style changed slightly. The Bruisers released a 7" split with the Dropkick Murphys in 1997 (while Mike McColgan was still that band's singer). By mid 1998, Al Barr was the only remaining original member of The Bruisers. The Bruisers reunited on September 14, 2005 to perform a concert at The Roxy in Boston. The bill included local acts The Ducky Boys and Tommy & The Terrors, as well as The Casualties from New York City.
The year was 1982. The place was New York City. Who’d guess that almost twenty years later a band first called Zoo Crew would emerge as the seldom contested, always respected Godfathers of Hardcore – Agnostic Front? AF has outlived their peers and is going strong after more than 20 years of punk rock and hardcore.

The Oppressed is a Welsh anti-fascist Oi! band that was formed in 1981 in Cardiff. Most of the musicians in the band's various lineups were skinheads. Throughout the band's career, the members (especially vocalist Roddy Moreno) openly expressed opposition to racism and fascism; in their lyrics, interviews, on-stage comments and other actions. In 1989, Moreno visited New York City and met many members of Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice (SHARP) members. On his return to the United Kingdom, he started promoting SHARP ideals to British skinheads. The band has also had ties to other anti-racist groups, such as Anti-Fascist Action. The band's lead singer, Roddy Moreno, is a Cardiff City F.C. supporter.

Hard and driving, L.E.S. Stitches crank out uncompromising straight-up punk. With a pair of punishing guitars cranking out Ramones style riffs, the band's cranks out a relentless sonic attack. While not hardcore, L.E.S. Stitches manage a no-holds-barred east coast sound thick with the smoke and grime of small clubs.
Don’t look now, but punk is still refusing to die. It’s a refreshing switch to see a punk band putting its efforts where it belongs—into its music—rather than concentrating on half-baked schemes to prove just how punk it is. Confident in its abilities and style, Lower East Side Stitches crank out a self-assured platter balancing its solid, anthemic punk sounds against a reserved, though in no way apologetic, atmosphere. Mixing full-bodied riffs thick with the aura of the Ramones with an attitude reminiscent of British realpunk bands, Staja 98 L.E.S. is nothing if not a tribute to the ghosts of punk rock past. Thankfully, however, the Stitches avoid knocking out hack-worthy imitations of their elders, blowing out a string of tracks capturing the paradoxically nihilistic and hopeful attitude found in the punk through its history. At its best when the band delivers matter-of-fact glimpses of life, the Stitches display a flair for almost journalistic paintings of urban life. With an almost off-handed causality, the Stitches capture the pangs of desperation with startlingly powerful tracks such as "NYC Is Dead," "Frustration," and "Down the Drain." Though nearly overflowing with despondency, the Stitches don’t glorify a lifestyle, or complain or boast of their street credibility. They simply tell it like it is.
While not breaking any new ground musically, the Stitches musical attack suits its aims. Snare and high hat patterns provide the background for stripped-down Ramones-style guitar and bass. Though not groundbreaking, the Stitches pull off their sound with a relaxed capability often absent in bands desperate to prove themselves. At times, however, Staja strays from its strengths, with tracks dabbling in some of punk’s characteristic short-sidedness. While rarely glorifying the hand-to-mouth world of punk, songs like "Naked A" and "ID" do little but enshrine long-held views on the links between alcoholism and punk cred. Other songs simply lack the vision of the band’s better material, such as "Unload Reload," a typical look at the trials of touring, and the simply pointless "Jungle Man" and "Tiger Boy."

13 furious spit-in-your-face tracks with the angst, speed, and balls that you have come to expect from Lars. This record is full of classic California aggro-punk anthems that will leave your head aching and ears ringing...straight-up thrash!
A very solid album overall. Lars Frederiksen is kind of the "other" guy from Rancid as he came into Rancid after a few years. This album shows his background and is more 80's metal (Motorhead) than a straight up punk album. "To Have or Have Not" is a classic and is often played at Rancid shows. "Dead American" and "Skunx" are great songs as well.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Champaign/Urbana, IL, gained some notoriety as a college town with a surprisingly great independent music scene (along the lines of Athens, GA) -- one of the bands that pioneered and set the tone for the town's scene in the '80s was the Vertebrats, whose occasionally wonderful post-punk tunes gained enough recognition for the Replacements to cover one of them. A Thousand Day Dream, released through the C/U label Parasol, collects a great deal of the band's recordings, some of which is semi-brilliant and some of which is not -- the band takes its Clash, Rockpile, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Ramones, and Neil Young influences into the sort of American post-punk territory (Replacements, Husker Du, Mission of Burma) one would expect, and with laudable results. Parasol's package includes extensive liner notes from members of the band and from Paul Budin of the Outnumbered, a C/U band that followed very directly in the Vertebrats' footsteps.

Voodoo Glow Skulls are an American third-wave ska-punk band formed in 1988 in Riverside, California by brothers Frank, Eddie and Jorge Casillas and their longtime friend Jerry O'Neill. Voodoo Glow Skulls first played out at backyard parties and later at Spanky's Café, where they played shows with the Angry Samoans, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Firehose, Murphy's Law and The Dickies. In 1990 VGS put out their first EP with the help of local band Public Humiliation and also booked their own DIY US tour.
In 1991, the band added a horn section, consisting of Joey Hernandez on saxophone, Joe McNally on trumpet and Brodie Johnson on trombone. The band's first independent release came out in 1992 with the "Rasta Mis Huevos" 7" EP for Signal Sound Systems Records, and performed as headliners and support act for The Offspring, No Doubt, Reverend Horton Heat, and 311. Voodoo Glow Skulls recorded their debut album Who Is, This Is? for Dr. Strange Records in 1993, selling 200,000 copies worldwide. The band then signed to Epitaph Records and released four albums that collectively sold over 750,000 copies worldwide. Voodoo Glow Skulls soon began receiving positive critical reviews and the mainstream support of commercial radio and MTV. Eventually they had main stage spot on the 1998 Warped Tour. In 2001 VGS left Epitaph records and signed to Victory records. The band has released 3 albums on victory and continue to tour.....

Wow! What do you get when you mix equal parts Green Day brand enthusiasism and pop sensibility, with Descendent's-like musical complexity and deconstruction of the worlds of both "alternative" and punk rock? You get this record. This record is packed with great songs and gems like their brilliant cover of the Power Rangers' theme song that remind me of the Dickies. This is not your typical Lookout Records three chord punk rock, by the numbers outing. This is a real album that's obviously planned and well thought out.
Songs like "Rescue", "Pack Rat", "Childhood Game" and "Dylan" just make me keep putting this one back in my CD player. Why didn't these guys get huge? I predict that this record will, like great underappreciated-in-their-time bands such as the Velvet Underground and Wire, inspire dozens of other bands to take up the punk rock cause and not fear injecting humor into their work. Damn fine record.

Some of the best 18 minutes and 21 seconds on an album ever. yes the cd is short, but these five songs can carry the whole album alone. yes it's only five songs, atleast in my copy. "master race" is changed to "masquerade" ,typo, who knows. "corrupted" seems to be "corrupted to hell" as the fourth track. anyway great album, find it buy it enjoy it. :) - - John (amazon.com)

If ever there was a group that could have been the result of a tragic rock n’ roll hybrid of The Ramones and Black Sabbath (God forbid), that band could only be Motochrist. Formed on June 6, 1998, primarily as a way to get free drinks, the band rapidly became a force to be reckoned with as a result of their electrifying and often destructive live shows. Singer/bassist Danny Nordahl (New York Loose, Faster Pussycat, Stiv Bators, The Throbs) and lead guitarist Marc Diamond (New York Loose, The Dwarves, Blister) teamed up with local gunslinger Ricky Vodka (Humble Gods, Doggy Style) to forge a unique sound that blended pop with power. Motochrist began their sonic assault with cuts on compilation albums such as The Best of the Cadillac Club and Dr. Wu Compilation Volume 2 (available through Dr. Wu Records) which gave the public their first taste of The Christ. Their lineup solidified with the addition of drummer Tom Brayton (The Dwarves, Psychotica), Motochrist hit the studio to create 666 Pack, an homage to all that is rock. With themes running the gamut from Evel Knievel to the most common of voices, 666 Pack is an album which only Motochrist could have made. The volume might crush you, but the hooks stay deeply imbedded in the brain; from the hook laden chorus of “To Evel” to the bone crushing stomp of “Dig Your Hole,” no rock n’ roll stone is left unturned. Don’t confuse them with the angry frat-boy “New Metal” currently poisoning our youth, Motochrist take over where The Dead Boys and AC/DC left off. Tom departed from the band and Chad Stewart (Faster Pussycat, every other band in L.A.) stepped up to the riser. Although Chad has been with Moto for a few years now, he is still known as "The New Guy" to many. With the upcoming release of Greetings from The Bonneville Salt Flats on Heatslick Records, Motochrist plan to tour as much as possible and bring mayhem to a town near you. If this sounds good to you, then come see Motochrist when they play a club near you. If not your cup of tea, then tell someone you hate.

Gogol Bordello is a multi-ethnic Gypsy punk band from the Lower East Side of New York City that formed in 1999 and is known for its theatrical stage shows. Much of the band's sound is inspired by Gypsy music, as its core members are immigrants from Eastern Europe. The band incorporates minor-key accordion and fiddle (and on some albums, saxophone) mixed with cabaret, punk, and dub as well as multiple languages. Phill Jupitus has once described the band as "a bit like The Clash and The Pogues having a fight... in Eastern Europe," while Kenneth Partridge of The Hartford Courant described lead singer Eugene Hütz's voice as "somewhere between that of Borat and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog". Nikolai Gogol, the band's namesake, was an ideological influence because he "smuggled" Ukrainian culture into Russian society, which Gogol Bordello intends to do with Gypsy/East-European music in the English-speaking world. "Bordello" refers to a brothel or a "gentleman's club". The band was originally titled Hütz and the Béla Bartóks, but Eugene Hütz says that they decided to change the name because "nobody knows who the hell Béla Bartók is in the United States". The band played their first show as the unofficial band at an after-hours club called Pizdetz on Ridge Street, where they became the house band and DJ Hütz became the house DJ.
Gogol Bordello's first single was released in 1999, and since then they have released four full-length albums, and one EP. In 2005 the band signed to punk label SideOneDummy Records. The band has toured tirelessly throughout Europe and America on numerous international festivals and toured with such diverse bands as Primus, Flogging Molly, and Cake. In an interview with NPR, frontman Eugene Hütz cites Jimi Hendrix and Parliament-Funkadelic as among the band's main musical influences.

The Sauce is the first solo release of Eddie Spaghetti of the American rock and roll band The Supersuckers. It is a collection of country drinking songs released in 2003 on Mid-Fi Records. After the success of "Must've Been High" the band tried (and failed) to work their way up the corporate record label ladder. Spaghetti: "That was a confusing time and it really slowed us down. I felt like we were making some of our best rock ever," (true enough, 2000's "The Evil Powers Of Rock-N-Roll" (Koch) is widely considered one of the groups best records) "but the labels just kept jerkin' us around. I learned a lot about the business and about myself and what truly makes me happy about making music. And that happiness has nothing to do with what some fat-cat sitting behind a desk spending some young kid's hopes and dreams on a recoupable expense account thinks about my art" Enter Mid-Fi Recordings. "This fella named Chris Neal came scouting us for RCA. But after talking to each other after the show we both realized that we wanted something else, something outside the system. No bosses! So now Chris is The Mid-Fi Guy and The Supersuckers are more successful than ever!" Mid-Fi has enabled Eddie and the band to finally take matters into their own hands and get the music to the people. Starting with a live country record, Must've Been Live, Mid-Fi has been cranking out the product including (but not limited to) 2003's Motherfuckers Be Trippin' and Eddie's first solo record, The Sauce.
The Sauce was such a happy accident. There were a few days open at this studio here in town and I just grabbed them and knocked it out. I can't believe how happy I am with something that took so little time to create!" A stripped down acoustified collection of some of Eddie's favorite covers ("And two originals!") featuring Eddie on guitar, bass and vocals with Mike Murderburger on drums and few guests sprinkled in, The Sauce has become a fan favorite.
"I don't look at these records as something born of 'creative frustrations' or whatever typical reasons singers do these things. I see them as extensions of the story of the Supersuckers. I am and always will be a Supersucker, no matter what I do with the rest of my life, you know? That said, this record is ridiculous. It's so good. I've never been more proud of anything I've ever done. Toot-toot! Is that my own horn I'm blowing? I guess it is. Well, somebody's gotta do it!"

"Bela Lugosi's Dead" is a gothic rock song written by the band Bauhaus. The song was the band's first single, released in August 1979, which is often considered to be the first gothic rock record released.[1] It did not enter the UK pop charts, but remained on sale for many years thereafter. The b-side features the song "Boys" and some versions also include an early demo recording of what would be their next single, "Dark Entries." Due to licensing restrictions, the original version of the title track was not made available on any other format until the 1998 album, Crackle - The Best of Bauhaus. The song is over nine minutes in length and was recorded "live in the studio" in a single take. David J, the band's bassist, claims on his website to have written the lyrics. By far their most famous work, its minimalist, free-form nature evoked a mixture of The Doors, early Pink Floyd and experimental Krautrock bands such as Can and Neu! The singing does not start (in the studio version) until several minutes into the track. The distinctive guitar sound was achieved by using partial barre chords and allowing the top E and B strings open, adding to the drone-like quality of the song.

Bulemics are a five piece punk rock outfit from Austin, Texas that formed in a drunken haze in early 1996. Although many line-up changes have occurred, their attitude has remained the same; have fun while you can at any cost, because you never know when it'll all be over. Over the years, they have released many singles, and four albums-"old enough to know better...too young to care" (junk records), "blurred vision and twisted thoughts" (man's ruin records), "talk dirty to me" (tsb records), and 2002's "soundtrack to the apocalypse"(steelcage records). With their abilty to play circles around the average punk band and filthy subject matter, they're not for the faint of heart, and definately not what you want influencing young impressionable minds. When they bring it all to the stage, a good time is guaranteed, and they always more than live up to their reputation as a live band not to be missed. With no signs of slowing down, and a total disregard for human decency, the Bulemics will not rest until their photos are plastered on the bedroom wall of every teenage girl in the free world...

J Church's 'garage' EP, all recorded to 8-track at the same time as the Arbor Vitae sessions. The CD track list states that Zero=Zero is track four but it actually forms the first half of track five and segues seemlessly into Beverly Hills, which is a Circle Jerks song from their Group Sex album. The uncredited fourth track - which was never actually meant to appear on here - is You Fucking Trick, a little over two minutes of noise in the style of Nirvana's Endless, Nameless, with Lance swearing at the top of his voice at some unfortunate individual. This was the band's last release on Allied and according to Lance, it was a "going away present".

Blondie was the most commercially successful band to emerge from the punk/new wave movement of the late 1970s. The lineup changed a lot over the years but at the core of the group from the day it was formed in August 1974 was singer Deborah Harry and guitarist Chris Stein, who had both been in the Stilettos. This debut album was released in late 1976 by Private Stock Records and clearly defines the group's style as taking the girl group sound of the Sixties and fusing it with the punk sensibilities of the Seventies to become new wave icons. Blondie was never punk the way the Ramones or the Talking Heads were punk, but they still had serious attitude.
This is amply proven by this album's first track and the group's first single, "X Offender." The song was originally entitled "Sex Offender," before the record company changed it, and the lyrics tell of a criminal falling for the cop who busts her. At the same time that the song fits the formula of the teenager in love angst songs of the 1950s and 1960s it also clearly mocks such songs as well. "In the Flesh," one of the few songs where Harry tries to sound really sexy, sounds like it should have come out of the Brill Building a decade earlier except Harry's vocal performance here, with its echoes of Marilyn Monroe, keys you in that there is some serious deconstruction at work here. Just listen to the final line of "Look Good in Blue" and clearly there is a tongue in cheek attitude to the double-entendres. --- Lawrance M. Bernabo

Ex-Cathedra are an anarcho punk band from Glasgow, Scotland. They got together in 1991 and in late 1993 we heard about them after buying a copy of their first single on their own label. We did a single 'Tresspass' and then offered them an album. Their debut album, 'Tartan Material' was produced by Frankie (Leatherface) Stubbs. One more single followed a cover of Culture Club's 'Karma Chameleon' then they were off. They are still going strong and I think they have a second album out on MoonSka records as well as a new compilation of early stuff including the 'Tresspass' E.P. You can usually catch them on tour playing all around the UK and Europe.

Grin and Bear It, the second album by the Ruts, was hastily cobbled together in the wake of frontman Malcolm Owen's death, a ragbag of material that reached from their "In a Rut" debut single through to an alternate mix of their "West One" swan song (via their final John Peel session) and three live tracks. It was a shambolic offering -- the Ruts deserved far more. However, Grin and Bear It lines up alongside their debut album, the rest of the Peel sessions, and assorted live recordings to remind listeners that, though the Ruts never came close to fulfilling their promise, the promise itself was spellbinding.

The Ripcordz haven’t been around forever -- it just seems that way.
Formed in 1980, the band played various basements and dives before deciding they really didn’t have anything better to do and really started paying attention to what they were doing. The result, their first album, “Ripcordz Are Go(d)” released in 1988. Since then, they’ve released ten full-length albums, gone on 13 cross-Canada tours and played well over a thousand shows (they stopped counting a while back). The sound includes a mix of rock ‘n roll, hardcore, Punk and pop (mostly Punk, we’d say). They like to describe it as a glob of distortion that bursts out of your speakers and soils the rug so your parents have to clean it up. (The band likes to say that, but the record company wishes they would stop…) They’ve played with a wide variety of alternative bands including Rancid, Nirvana, Anti-Flag, Lydia Lunch, DOA, The Misfits and a host of others. Rancid was even nice enough to call them “Canada’s best Punk band.”
With Alex on bass, and François Demers rejoining the band on drums -- it’s their strongest line-up yet. And Paul vows that he’ll learn how to play guitar any day now. The band’s latest album, “What if they held a revolution and nobody came?” has been getting some rave reviews. And they’re happy to keep playing and releasing new material as long as the fans like the new stuff more than the old. Paul describes it this way: “We may be an old band, but we’re playing new music. Once we become our own cover band, I’m gonna quit and take up knitting or politics or something...”

Battle of Disarm is a crust punk band from Isigawa, Japan. They originally formed over rising concerns on the cruel treatment of animals, & high usage of vivisection by major corporations. Since they first formed in 1989, they have refused to release any material on compact disk, in protest of the technological advances that has swept across Japan, which they say has lead to worldwide "corruption and murder". Other issues they have focused on is the disarming of nuclear weapons, by releasing songs like Disarm or Die! and , in concern that more bombings, like the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, might occur.

Formed in 1989 from the ashes of The Untouchables, this London three piece sought a return to the powerful guitar based rock'n'roll that inspired them to first pick up their instruments in the late seventies. Influenced by The Jam, The Ruts, Ramones and of course the Pistols the Guitar Gangsters produced a debut album of melodic power punk gems that made "Prohibition" a sort after release. This, together with tracks on Link Records' "Underground Rockers" compilation album (Manic Street Preachers, Senseless Things and Mega City Four were also featured) brought the band to the attention of Stiff Little Fingers who invited the Gangsters as guests on the Fingers' comeback UK tour. 1992 saw the release of the Guitar Gangsters' second album "Money With Menaces" on Communique Records and the band continue to gig throughout the UK. Occasional airplays on evening Radio One created a buzz about the band but a reluctance by the Gangsters to soften their musical style discouraged major label interest. Another one album deal was done - this time with Anagram, a division of Cherry Red and "Power Chords For England" was recorded and released on CD in 1994 In 1995 the Guitar Gangsters began to discover European audiences and toured with 999, The Lurkers, Vibrators and others and recorded "Skweeler!" for release on the band's own Rampant Music label. Recognising the new European interest in the band, Captain Oi! Records have released a double CD of the first two albums that had been unavailable since 1994. A live album recorded in Germany and Poland in 1998, "Made In England - Live In Europe" was released early in 1999 on the Rampant label. The band were out touring Europe again in 2000 with Vice Squad and in July of that year the UK streetpunk label Captain Oi! released the Gangsters' first studio album since "Skweeler!" -"Road To Reality" pulling together songs written over a three year period - the early punk influences were still evident and the band stuck to what they do best and for this they make no apology. Tales of suburbia and failed ambition hung on a wall of guitars played with passion and honesty.
In May 2001 the band travelled to Los Angeles as guests of The Generators to play a tour of the West Coast and begin recording for a new album. USA's premier streetpunk label, TKO released a sample track "Safety Pin Through My Heart" from the forthcoming album on a compilation "Punch Drunk III" put out in September 2001. In July of that year Guitar Gangsters joined over 100 other punk bands to celebrate 25 years of punk at Holidays In The Sun festival at Morecombe. In October 2002 Captain Oi! will release the band's 6th studio album titled "Another Day In Pleasantville" and a track from the album titled "Rattle My Cage" can be found on the Captain Oi! sampler out soon. In August this year the band play a short tour in Germany taking in the ANTIfest near Prague as they go. In November, to promote the release of the new album Guitar Gangsters will be touring the UK and Eastern Europe.

Edward Carlyle Daly III, better known as Eddie Spaghetti, or "Your Worst F*#@ing Nightmare"[who?] is the lead singer and bassist for the American rock and roll band The Supersuckers. He has a penchant for wearing cowboy hats and aviator-style sunglasses. In addition to playing with The Supersuckers, he has a solo career that started with the 2003 release of his album of country drinking songs, The Sauce. Eddie Spaghetti grew up in Tucson, Arizona trying desperately to ignore the country music that floated all around him. Seems like every pick-up truck and storefront speaker was cranking out the syrupy wails of some heartbroken hick and he just wasn't having it. So, as a kid, he turned to Heavy Metal, then Punk Rock, to block out the noise and that's how his band, The Supersuckers, was born. Formed in late '88, The Supersuckers aim was to strip away some of the pretense of late '80's Heavy Metal and put a little showmanship into the Punk scene. It was a tightrope act few bands could achieve but, by the beginning of '89, not only had the band done it, they were ready to make a move away from the dirt roads, dead ends and dust of their hometown.
“The Supersuckers make me want to fight and frug, but that damn Spaghetti makes me want to lilt and lager, I love that man, I wanna to steal all his pens. One guy talkin’ about rock…Bonafide!” -Tim Rogers from You Am I
“Eddie is replacing me in the world of harmonica.” -Mickey Raphael, harmonica player for Willie Nelson

Only released after Smogtown split up following the release of the band's second album, 2001's Domesticviolenceland, Tales of Gross Pollution 1995-1996 gathers all of Smogtown's early demos -- which, it turns out, sound pretty much exactly like the finished tracks on the two later albums. There's little that's particularly original about Smogtown; if the band had been around in 1980, Greg Ginn would have signed them to SST Records in a heartbeat. These 19 songs are brief (two-thirds under the two-minute mark) blurts of skate punk powered by shout-along choruses and some memorable guitar riffs. Singer Chavez has the yobbish charm of Black Flag's Dez Cadena or the Circle Jerks' Keith Morris, although here he offers considerably less personality than either. Basically, Tales of Gross Pollution 1995-1996 sounds exactly like what it is: the skeletal early recordings of a band that never did much with its potential but was sloppily entertaining while it lasted.

Undoubtedly, The Gee Strings are one of the outstanding '77 punkrock bands in Europe. With authentic and sovereign raw energy, they passionately blast their 2 minute songs through the speakers, always with the optimal doses of sex, sweat, and rock & roll.
Influenced by the Sex Pistols, Heartbreakers, The Stooges, and of course, the Ramones, The Gee Strings create their own convincing punk rock & roll of international quality, not only regarding their live performance. Their dirty, catchy songs, somewhere between Detroit and New York '74 and London '77, are crowned with the voice and inimitable stage show by female lead singer Ingi Pop.

The McRackins are a Canadian pop punk band that was formed in 1994. Their song and album titles revolve around egg puns (i.e. "Bat Out of Shell") They have had approximately 70 releases from over 30 different record labels.
The McRackins nearly always play live in full costume and made up to look like two eggs and a dog. The band claims that they were transformed from men to two eggs and a dog and given super pop-punk powers as the result of a freak nuclear accident. Since then, twin eggs Bil (guitar, vocals), Fil (bass) and dog Spot (drums). With sporadic touring throughout their native Canada and the US up until that point, 1996 saw the band take their live show to Europe. Dubbed the European Eggvasion, the McRackins toured seven countries as well as recording some live electric and acoustic sessions for the BBC. The band has made several music videos, which have received light to medium rotation on music channels in Canada, the US, and Europe. Further media exposure includes an appearance in a Molson Canadian beer television commercial, a cameo role in an independently produced motion picture titled Downhill Willy, and various television and radio features. The band came out of hiatus to finish their album Bat Out of Shell. Their twelfth full length album, it was released worldwide in 2006 by Wynona Records, Italy and contained twelve new tracks. A full European tour followed in Jan/Feb 2007 in support, visiting over 30 cities in 12 countries over a 6 week span.
In early 2007 they released MCRACKINS VS JOKERS with Italy's JOKERS on San Martin Records, Italy. The band is currently completing their latest CD which will be released in North America and Europe by New York based label "Cheapskate Records" in summer of 2008. The CD will also be released in Japan by new label "Suggoi Records" in Sept/October with their first ever tour of Japan in the spring of 2009.

The Lillingtons blasted their way out of the sleepy cowtown of Newcastle, WY, in 1996 high off the influence of spirited bands like the Ramones, Screeching Weasel, and the Queers. Comprised of Kody Templeman (vocals/guitar), Cory Laurence (bass), and Tim O'Hara aka Timmy V (drums), the band also later included Zachary Rawhouser (guitar). Self-releasing their first album, 1996's Shit Out of Luck, the Lillingtons initially coupled their direct pop-punk approach with adolescent-styled lyrics about girls and high school. But after a succession of vinyl-only releases, the guys got sick of singing about broken hearts and decidedly changed their lyrical line of attack. Their subsequent album, Death by Television, was issued in 1999 on the Lookout! imprint Panic Button (run by Ben Weasel and John Jughead). Produced by Mass Giorgini -- of Screeching Weasel, Squirtgun, and Queers fame -- the album was thematically based around sci-fi movies. NOFX's Fat Mike has been quoted praising the fan-favorite record as "the best pop-punk album of all time." Heavily touring the punk circuit with bands like Teen Idols, the Lillingtons were becoming underground favorites. Again with Giorgini behind the controls, their spy-themed follow-up, The Backchannel Broadcast, appeared in February 2001.
By the end of the year, however, the band had called it quits. Following the group's dissolution, Kody moved on to play with Laramie-based (and similarly minded) Teenage Bottlerocket. Tim moved to New Mexico, where he played with the Eyeliners before starting his own hardcore outfit, Stabbed in Back. Clearview issued the three-CD box set Technically Unsound in 2005; it contained the out of print Shit Out of Luck (the original album mix and a new one by Giorgini), tracks from a 10" split with Nothing Cool, the Lost My Marbles 7" (recorded by Joe Queer), live tracks, and unreleased material for the Stupid World 7". The Lillingtons reunited in early 2006 with plans for a new album on Red Scare that fall. The label re-released Death by Television in June 2006, and as promised, the all-new The Too Late Show appeared that October.

Portland's punk-pop outfit Moral Crux is another rollicking rock band with a musical and political outlet that resembles the intensity of the Queers. Having played to SoCal crowds and surroudings punk pockets since the early '90s, Moral Crux built themselves a name and landed a deal with Lookout!, the label that brought Green Day, Rancid, and the Donnas to the mainstream. Something More Dangerous was issued in fall 1999 and Side Effects of Thinking followed a year later. I Was a Teenage Teenager and And Nothing But the Truth were both issued on Coldfront in early 2001.

If the Queers had been more enamored of London Calling-era Clash than the early Ramones, they might have turned out something like Portland's Moral Crux. The 14 songs on ...And Nothing But the Truth are super-catchy two-minute three-chord punk-pop with sweetly ingenuous, boyish vocals and politely distorted guitars. But instead of enthusing about the joys of cars, girls, and junk culture, Moral Crux have bigger things on their minds. Songs like "Soldier Boy" (an antiwar screed about men in uniform "dying for the president's image") and the self-explanatory "Tienanmen '89" prove that not all political punk needs to sound like Crass in order to be effective, and that catchy punk-pop songs can contain a weightier message than the relative hotness of the girls in homeroom. This is surprisingly effective stuff.

Based in San Francisco during the '80s, MDC trumped the Dead Kennedys by performing politically charged hardcore punk that was arguably more extreme than what got the Kennedys into trouble. Alternately known as Multi-Death Corporation, Millions of Dead Cops, or Millions of Damn Christians, the group formed in Texas in 1980 but moved to the West Coast by the time of their first release, a 1981 7" titled "John Wayne Was a Nazi." After their album debut, 1982's Millions of Dead Cops, the band released a 1983 EP but then was silent for several years.
MDC returned in 1986 with their second album, Smoke Signals, a musically mature record which didn't leaven the political content one bit. MDC aimed their sights at religion for 1987's This Blood's for You -- recorded as Millions of Damn Christians -- and began to expand their sound on the album, using acoustic guitar and definite attempts at melody. After releasing some rare and unreleased material on More Dead Cops, MDC returned to their hardcore roots on 1989's Metal Devil Cokes. Issued the same year, Elvis: In the Rheinland consists of a 1988 show recorded in Berlin.

Portland (by way of Alaska) post-hardcore outfit Anatomy of a Ghost formed in the second half of 2002 and quickly built up a notable underground following though their heavy Internet presence and energetic live show. Within months, the guys -- vocalist John Gourley, drummer Nick Simon, bassist Zach Carothers, and guitarists Joe Simon and Dewey Halpaus -- had signed to local indie Rise Records. They toured nationwide during summer 2003 with Saosin and Boys Night Out, releasing their debut, Evanesce, that October (licensed to Fearless Records). The album garnered the group comparisons to acts like Thrice, Thursday, and Coheed & Cambria, the last band mostly due to Gourley's higher pitched vocals. Anatomy of a Ghost broke up in May 2004, as the bandmembers wanted to explore other musical avenues; Gourley and Carothers soon resurfaced in Portugal. The Man. By early 2005, Anatomy had re-formed with plans for a new album, but by midsummer, Gourley and Carothers had turned their attention back to Portugal instead, releasing that group's first album in early 2006. Halpaus also released a record with his new metal-leaning project, the Burning Room, in June 2006 through Mediaskare.

The Planet Smashers' third album, Life of the Party has more than enough catchy tunes and skanking ska grooves to help the record live up to its title; the group offers its warped sense of humor to go along with a set of fairly consistent songs, among them "Super Orgy Porno Party" and "All Men Fear Women."

The second full-length from Rye Coalition not only continues in the aggressively discordant style of their debut, but builds to an even higher plateau with new sounds directions and ideas. The opening pound of "The Prosthetic Aesthetic" is brutal but enveloping, and the chaotic sounds continue for the rest of the recording. With their second record the band finally seems comfortable and competent in the studio, and the resulting sounds are all over the map of charming musical atonality. The Shellac and even Fugazi influences still shine through, but the band is starting to sound more like a peer than an emulator on this LP; the songs are much more varied, and while the overall similarities of their powerful sound continue from track to track, each piece stands on its own. The Lipstick Game is a huge sounding rock record, and, on cuts like the title track, the group shows an outstanding grip on the science of writing loud rock tunes. There are changes, stops, and breakdowns all over the record, and these moments show Rye Coalition to be true innovators capable of doing whatever they want and somehow always pulling it off. Even the acoustic-tinged "Tangiers" and the instrumental closer "Through the Years" succeed, the second as a gorgeous soaring finale that avoids the band's usual in-your-face approach, and manages to prove their ability to write a subtle and still effective piece. Rye Coalition are still a raw rock force, and The Lipstick Game is their best release yet -- it would be a shame for anyone interested in cutting edge (or just plain cutting) rock to miss out on it.

Childhood friends Ralph Cuseglio (vocals) and Jon Gonnelli (guitar) yearned to play rock music and at the helm of grunge, the two formed Rye Coalition. David Leto joined in to play drums and brought along his childhood mate, Justin Morey, to play bass. A dynamic within the group was tight, while Herb Wiley was added to make it a sure fit. The members of Rye Coalition were barely 20 when they issued their five-song demo, The Dancing Man, in 1994. A few shows in and around their native New York sparked a fervent desire, but they were a working-class band who came from well-educated households. Cuseglio and Gonnelli attended college in New Jersey, whereas Wiley left the group in 1996 to do the same. Now a four-piece, Rye Coalition issued several 7" EPs, one split with Karp, and toured the country. Hee Saw Dhuh Kaet, the band's first studio effort, was released on Gern Blandsten in 1997; however, Morey departed for a West Coast venture. Leto's brother, Gregg Leto, moved in on drums, allowing Dave to take over bass duties. Rye Coalition, who's driving punk snarls were taking hold of scenes overseas, embarked on their first European tour in late 1997. Two years later, The Lipstick Game appeared and Morey returned after Gregg Leto left for college. By the new millennium, the band's regular responsibilities fell short when Cuseglio went to graduate school and the others took on day jobs in education. A six-month break was well-deserved, but Rye Coalition came out to play a gig with Shellac, Seam, Don Cab, and Uzeda in mid-2000. After such a powerful performance, they finally decided to make Rye Coalition a full-time thing. A deal with Tiger Style surfaced in 2001 and Wiley came back in time to record On Top with producer Steve Albini. A shared tour with Trans Am followed that winter, prepping Rye Coalition for the release of their third album.

Emerging from the rather unlikely locale of Montreal, Quebec, ska revivalists the Planet Smashers were formed in 1994 by singer/guitarist Matt Collyer, bassist Dave Cooper, saxophonist Leon Kingston, trombonist Kurt Ruzenisky, and drummer Tim Doyle. Debuting with a 1996 self-titled effort for their own STOMP imprint, later that year they also issued the EP Inflate to 45 RPM. Attack of the Planet Smashers appeared in 1998, followed by Life of the Party a year later. By this point the band's lineup had shifted to include Collyer, Cooper, saxophonist Neil "Lonestar" Johnson, trombonist Andrew Lattoni, and drummer Scott Russell. They'd also built a respectable following throughout North America, touring with bands like Mustard Plug, AFI, Samiam, and the Aquabats, among others, and STOMP was doing well as a ska- and punk-flavored indie. The Planet Smashers remained consistent over the years, dropping No Self Control in 2001, Fabricated in 2002, and Mighty in 2004. The DVD Ten appeared in 2004 as well, documenting the band's first ten years together with interviews, music videos, live footage, and more, while the band spent several weeks on the summer's Vans Warped Tour. Unstoppable was next issued in 2005.

Take the more insanely violent elements of hardcore and death metal, throw in a few Moogs, put them into a blender, speed up the rmps as high as they'll go, and out comes the Locust. Granted, that's an oversimplification, but it works. The Atari Teenage Riot for the arty hardcore set, the Locust display all of their trademark characteristics on their first self-titled, full-length release on GSL: short, spastic blurts of overblown nervous energy held together by massive blast beats and an impeccable sense of split-second timing that never lets up, cryptic song titles (examples: "How to Build a Pessimistic Lie Detector," "Fixed Companionship, Ghost Town Irrationality") and equally cryptic lyrics, and a penchant for the paramilitary in terms of design. Following in the footsteps of such noisecore merchants as Angel Hair and Heroin, the Locust take Gravity-style hardcore and blow it to smithereens. In the end, though, this record is not that unique or groundbreaking in many respects, and the songs start to resemble each other more and more the more they are listened to; there is also somewhat of a shock value element to the record that diminishes with each subsequent listening. But few of their contemporaries come close to matching their incinerating intensity and sheer firepower. The manic energy and flagrant masochism of the Locust is very primal and infectious, and can keep the listener coming back again and again.

The Figgs formed in 1987 in Saratoga Springs, NY. Mike Gent (guitar, vocals), Pete Donnelly (bass), Pete Hayes (drums), and Guy Lyons (lead guitar) were power pop and brash punk freaks, recklessly mixing elements of each but rarely losing sight of a solid hook. The combo issued 7" and cassette releases on the area indie Absolute-a-Go-Go before making their official debut with the 1994 Imago LP Low-Fi at Society High. The Hi-Fi Dropouts EP followed that same year; both received solid notices from critics and college radio. Imago's sudden loss of financing and distribution left the Figgs and material for their follow-up high and dry, but the band landed on its feet at Capitol, which issued Banda Macho in 1996. However, despite some touring and promotion, Capital wasn't really sure what to do with the ambitious Banda or the guys who made it, and the Figgs were kicked to the curb. Their next opportunity came as the backing band for Graham Parker, who tapped them for a tour after hearing their version of "Passion Is No Ordinary Word." The jaunt spawned a live set called The Last Rock N Roll Tour (Razor and Tie, 1997), but it was mostly a great excuse for the Figgs to play with one of their heroes. The Couldn't Get High LP appeared from Absolute-a-Go-Go in 1998, followed by an EP for Hearbox a year later. 2000 saw issue of both the vinyl-only Rejects (Philthyrex) and Sucking in Stereo (Hearbox), which emphasized the early new wave side of the Figgs' engaging, bratty pop. Stereo was hailed by some as a return to stripped-down, happily rocking form for the group, which by this point had endured its unfair share of label woe and teasing success. The 2001 EP Badger built on Stereo's success, as did the Hearbox full-length Slow Charm a year later. Touring for that album included a stint with Tommy Stinson; the ex-Replacement returned the favor in 2004, guesting on the Figgs' self-released double album Palais. Two years later the Bloodshot label released 103 Degrees in June, a mail-order and download-only live album with the Figgs backing Graham Parker at Chicago's Double Door. By the end of the year, the new album Follow Jean Through the Sea appeared.
