The Morning Shakes - Lotta Trash Lotta Action + 7 inches

Jose, Brent, & Chris started playing together in September 1992 or so. Our first drummer was Skinny Dave because he could play jazz drums & had access to the music practice room at Manhattanville College where Jose, Brent, & Dave attended school. That line-up played one show on campus. Dave was replaced the following summer by Scott, who provided the backbone to make the 'Shakes actually almost sound like music. Jose was the only one who could sort of play to that point. Lots of shows & 7"s later, the band recorded "Lotta Trash! Lotta Action!!" in 1995, I think, to be released on 40 Watt the following year & then quickly released by Cacophone. A one-week tour of the midwest followed. The next year "Switchblades & Sideburns" was recorded for Stiff Pole Records & released in 1998 or so. The band broke up in Atlanta after its last show there at the Star Bar in the parking lot of the infamous Clermont Lounge while on another one-week tour for "Switchblades." We were overlooked because we were so friggin' sloppy for most of our 6 years together, but by the end we were smokin' hot live. I think the albums & many of the 7"s attest to that. All the recordings were done in conjunction with Steve Baise of the Devil Dogs, who helped us get what we were looking for & knew what was underneath the slop we adored & perpetrated, apparently to our detriment. Though who the hell knows? We had our fans, so it wasn't just us, right? Anyway, enjoy these tunes. They're probably hard to find. I think Stiff destroyed his back stock of "Switchblades," which is my personal fave. We'll change them occasionally. Oh, & Rockin' Bones put out a posthumous album of B-sides & cool unreleased stuff, which is probably readily available on vinyl. We'll post some of that down the road too. Highlights I remember offhand were being called a prig by Billy Childish when we toured with Thee Headcoats & The Makers for a few nights & of him being a bit of a bad sport when Brent beat him at pool. We played with Teengenerate a few times, who got us the Wallabies 7". We played with The Oblivians, The Detroit Cobras, The Brides...Probably some other bands I'd be proud to recall too, but it's all a little fuzzy. But the best shows were always when it was with our local friends The Heartdrops, Malibu Lou & the Attackers, & Electraluxx & an out-of-town friend band like The Gotohells, The Spills, or The Pink Lincolns. And of course, I met Loretta Jenkins (now Loretta Lynn) on the roof of Cacophone Records HQ when the 'Shakes played the Cacophone Showcase in Albany. That was a blast. I'll put up those old photos up soon. -Chris

The Silver Bullets - Out At Least

Absolutely fantastic real Rock 'n' Roll which is inspired by both the original American Rockabilly and the Great British Rock 'n' Roll sound. The Silver Bullets manage to capture the best of both style, blending them together into their own explosive brand of Rock 'n' Roll. Superb guitar playing and excellent vocals take the lead, with the drums and bass providing a tight and solid beat. Excellent. The Silver Bullets are guitar based Rock'n'roll from Finland. Somehow, Finland seems to churn out excellent guitar bands. Maybe it's those long cold Winter nights spent practising. Like so many of them, this is nicely produced, and while it is totally authentic and well-produced, it's not trying to sound like it was made in a small-time studio in 1955. There are some really nice 'twangy' bits here. If you like your Rock'n'roll to give your stereo something to get its tweeters into, you'll like this. Obviously, the Silver Bullets are not a bunch of hopped-up kids - they've been around a while, and years of listening to Rock'n'roll shine through this CD. Track four is an excellent cover of the Bobby Fuller Four song. Darrel Higham should have covered it!

Step Lively - The Trigger Effect

Several things divide the worthwhile from the mediocre when it comes to ska-punk. A good horn section, a decent singer, an acquaintance with more than two chords -- all of these indicate a band with more going for it than the simple ability to comp on the offbeat. Too many groups on the skacore scene are operating without any of those qualifications. But Step Lively have done their homework, and the evidence of that work is clear on their debut album. Everything is in place: a tight and substantial horn section, a good (if not awe-inspiring) singer, and, most importantly, tunes you're likely to remember supported by chord progressions that draw you in. The guitars are big and crunchy on "Price I Pay" and the synth is reminiscent of the Cars on "Give You Up"; the horns really shine on the swinging "Parker's Last Stand." There are a couple of nice cameo appearances, one by Jeff "King Django" Baker, who toasts up a storm on "Scorpio's Revenge." Recommended. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music Guide

Teengenerate - Live At Shelter

You've seen Guitar Wolf, you know The 5678s, you heard about The Gimmies, now you can get the real action. Bop Records and The Tote announce two exclusive Australian shows of the true kings of Tokyo Garage Punk, Teengenerate. The Tokyo quartet 2were at the spearhead of the mid 90s Japanese Garage Rock Craze. Although they only existed between 1993 and 1995, their impact on rock 'n' roll was enormous: garage rock would not be what it is now without them. Centered around long term musical collaborators (& brothers) Fink & Fifi, together with Sammy and Shoe, Teengenerate recorded everything in the red - the fuzz became a fifth member. Far from a gimmick, as their stand out long player Get Action suggests, (along with a hoard of 7 inches, split singles and comps), these guys were wild and tight. Their records have also included covers of Radio Birdman's "Burn My Eye", The Eastern Dark's "Johnny and Dee Dee", "Savage" by The Fun Things and "All I Want" by the Dirty Lovers. Following the demise of Teengenerate, members continued playing in other name droppers, including Firestarter, Supersnazz, and most recently the reformed Raydios. Teengenerate's "Live at Shelter" confirms what fans of the band who never saw them live assumed; few acts could ever hope to match their no-frills but manic live energy. For the others who dismiss this kind of timeless garage/punk trash and the greatness of Teengenerate, well this'll be forever lost on them!!! (Recorded at Shelter Club 23/Dec/1995 - enginieered by Yokoyama)

Frampton Brothers - File Under F Failure

Produced by Uno in Seattle ("42 hrs from Pittsburgh with us at the wheel"), the Framptons institutionalize their despair on File Under F (for Failure) but retain a sense of indignant amusement and ironic wit about the futility of it all. (Actually, on balance, the album is not as downhearted as the title promises.) "The Beginning of the End of the Fun Years," "My Little Sense of Doom," "Budge" and the title track mine frustration and pessimism with stirring rock guitars and a minimum of loser self-pity; on the other hand, "Drag," "Fucked" and "Shit-Colored Glasses" turn the loathing outward. Masley's day job as the Pittsburgh paper's music critic meet his fanboy sensibilities to fun insider effect in "Dressing Room" and "She's Reading All the Wrong Fanzines (Again)." All buoyed by music that is diverse, tuneful and catchy (don't miss "Evil Twin" and the country-western "Drunk"), File Under F proves that failure is a perfectly valid option.
After five years away from the studio and two years after they broke up, Ed Masley and Sean Lally reformed the Frampton Brothers in 1999 to give the world one last chance to find out what they were missing. And the results were certainly worth the effort; File Under F (For Failure) is easily the band's best album to date, boasting a ragged-but-right intensity their previous work only hinted at and a forceful punch that's a far cry from the polite power pop of their debut. File Under F's subtext is the story of a band that failed to grab the brass ring, and if songwriter Ed Masley is bitter about his failure to become a rock star (or at least quit his day job), these tunes are the best sort of therapy, spinning tales of life on the bottom of the rock food chain that are by turns hilarious and heartbreaking. "The Beginning of the End of the Fun Years" may be one of the best songs ever about a band grinding to an uncomfortable halt, and "Dressing Room" is a well-aimed rant at how little it takes to turn someone into the worst sort of rock star. There's no small irony in the fact that the Frampton Brothers made a great album about how they didn't make it, but from a musical standpoint, File Under F (For Failure) is a blazing success. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide

The Frantic Flattops - Cheap Woome Cheap Booze Cheaper Thrills

If the Frantic Flattops have their way, the next big thing in music will be a blast from the past: sounds produced by musical instruments, not machines. There are no computer-derived bleeps or bloots or anything remotely sounding like a drum machine on the Rochester, N.Y.-based band's album, Cheap Women, Cheap Booze, Cheaper Thrills, (Pravda Records). This solid collection is a pointed reminder of the band's mission to resurrect real rock 'n' roll.
The album is filled with tales of dark, seedy bars and the people who frequent them. Most of the songs deal with the difficulties of relationships and countless failed attempts to find the right woman. Songs like Sweeter 17, Black Eye Blues, and The Black Widow are dark love stories. The Flattops are a rockabilly act music, more along the lines of the Flat Duo Jets than the Stray Cats. The rejection and self-doubt conveyed in the songs can be felt with each wild guitar solo, each bass and drum line. But the band is not some sort of melancholy rockabilly Morrissey, hoping death will come soon. The songs serve as a record of experiences, best told over drinks, at late-night bars and venues where the band has played during its seemingly endless touring schedule. The Flattops' lineup came together six years ago in Rochester, N.Y. It consists of lead singer and guitarist Frantic Frank DeBlase, percussionist Too Tall Paul and bassist Sid Baker. The trio's musical ability is solid, and each track comes through with honest feeling and emotion. Though the songs tell vivid stories about bad relationships, listening to the album's 16 tracks at one sittingmakes the album seem repetitive. It's like listening to a friend tell his same woeful stories over and over. But by the end of the album, the listeners feels he knows the Flattops well.

Miss Mary Ann & The Ragtime Wrangles - Mad Mama

Solo album by Mary Ann - she is known from the well known dutch vocal duet "The Ranch Girls". In the early nineties Mary Ann was playing in a band "The Greyhounds" with Joe Sixpack on guitar and Sietse (now both members of the Ragtime Wranglers). After eight years being a 'Ranch Girl' Mary Ann decided -besides the Ranch Girls- to start a solo career. Miss Mary Ann is founder of the vocal duet "The Ranch Girls" from Rotterdam NL, who need no further introduction. After having played all over the world with the latter for the last 10 years, she has recently been successfully touring with her solo act as well.
A different act, less Western flavoured, more in the rockabilly tradition. A solo EP and "Mad Mama", her solo CD, have been issued on Goofin’ Records from Finland and new recordings are being made. She played major festivals like the "Rockabilly Rave" in the UK and the "Oneida’s Rockin’ Fifties Fest" in Wisconsin USA early this year 2002. Mad Mama is living in London but she still relies on her faithful backing band from Rotterdam "The Ragtime Wranglers": Joe Sixpack on guitar; Sexy Sietse on drums and Huey Moore on double-bass; musicians who have also been the favourite accompanists of no-one less than: Sid King, Hardrock Gunter, Curtis Gordon, the Collins Kids and many more . . . . . . Besides obscure forties and fifties material she alway sings many songs of her own, with her special characteristic style, sweet and mellow to loud and rocking. Each set is interchanged with some crazy, wild instumentals peppered with tape-echoes, temple blocks and peculiarities.
The band, dressed in vintage fezzed, glittering Shriner costumes, rocks on . . . . . until the break of day !

Anti Social - Battle Scarred Skinheads!

Hailing from Blackpool Anti Social issued three singles in the early 80`s on the Beat The System label and this 17 track collection includes them all plus eight previously unreleased cuts including a version of Sham 69`s ''What Have We Got''. WE WERE A BAND FORMED Summer of 1979-Summer of July 1984 Blackpool’s second best punk band, formed 1979, split by 1984. 3 singles and some demos which are all on a Captain Oi! retro CD now. Became more skinhead influenced as they went on and underwent a change of singer. Bassist Daz later formed Skin Up, who recorded a promising demo but split before they got to release anything on vinyl. What ever happened to this lot, both bands were unheard of in Leeds at the time so only about 30 people turned up even though it was only about 50p to get in but they were both really good. This looks like a home made cd of their first (and maybe only though I’m not sure) single. 4 tracks "Back Street Boys", "Your Choice", "New Punks" and "Screw U". All very basic sounding punk/oi and not that well recorded and you have to remember how old this is and back then bands didn’t have any fancy gizmos or computers or even the money to produce a masterpiece, still they made a better job than some bands today. Flitox - Cet Homme est Mort il Faut Prevenir La Police

Flitox formed in January 1986, with ex-members of Sherwood, Ludwig Von 88 (not a Nazi band, LV88 had many members of foreign origin), and Hanky Panky. After eight rehearsals, the band played their first gig, at l'USINE ("The Factory") in Montreuil (Paris suburbs). At this time Flitox rehearsed in the basement of a retired pension where Eric/Hanky Panky used to rehearse in. Four rehearsals later, the band went to a studio and recorded five songs which ended up on a 7", released by the very new label Jungle Hop International in May 1986. While everything seemed to be going well for the band, it was at this point that the first problems came up: their singer Eric left in June of 1986, due to musical differences. After trying out many singers, the band finally settled on Pee Wee in November. Ten days after this, the drummer left the band for any number of reasons possible or imagined. The day after he was replaced by Alex, who ended up staying in the band until March '87 (meanwhile the bassist Stef spent a short time in the army). Pee-Wee, who was singing at first, moved to drums. Finally by the end of May '87, Ian joined, thanks to an announcement he passed on RTH. Three weeks after his arrival, Flitox played three gigs.
At the end of the summer, Flitox departed for London (in a R5!) with enough material for a full-length, and recorded 15 songs in 6 1/2 days. The LP, titled Cet homme est mort..., was released by Jungle Hop in November 1987. There followed many concerts in France, as well as shows in RFA, Switzerland and Belgium. After a concert with Scream in February '88, Flitox made plans travel to the US and record their second LP, as well as play 20 dates with the band Dissent (South Dakota). Everything was OK until Ian was denied a visa from the US immigration services, due to his precarious social situation. The second LP ended up being recorded at WW (Paris) and mixed in Southern Studio.
Flitox Radio TV Active was released in October of 1988, which was followed by concerts, problems, etc, etc... In May '89 Flitox recruited a second guitarist, Hervé (ex-Blade), as other guitarist Lôrent seemed to have other priorities that came before Flitox. In July, after a month of tensions within the band, Flitox broke up. Soon after, Lôrent decided to reform the group with a new singer, and in September of 1989, songs for a third LP were written. After a few months of rehearsals and two concerts, however, Flitox split definitively.

Assück - Misery Index

Great shit, this is pure fucking crustcore if you have never heard them then you will like this if you like bands like Phobia,Extreme noise terror,Nausea,Doom,Anti product,Disrupt,Destroy,Resist and exist and other crust, grind, peace, anarcho bands. Yeah this is ASSUCK. brutal, short, heavy, loud, and fast. i don't know any other way to explain this thing. for any fans of Charles Bronson Capitilist Casualties or Spazz. i give it a 4 cause it is just to damn short only about 15 minutes of all out distuction. Florida Grind act ASSUCK made quite an impression despite their brief lifespan. Founded in 1992 by vocalist / guitarist Steve Heritage the band went through a succession of line ups. The 1995 line up included vocalist Paul Pavlovich, bassist Pete Jay and the NASTY SAVAGE credited drummer Rob Proctor. Bass guitar during 1996 was delegated to INHUMANITY and SCROTUM GRINDER's Steve Kosiba.
Daryl Kahan, erstwhile drummer for New York Hardcore act CITIZEN'S ARREST as well as figuring on the debut BORN AGAINST single, would front the band for a European tour. He would subsequently join arch Black Metal act ABAZAGORATH under the stage pseudonym of 'Morgul'. He would also lead FUNEBRARUM. During 2001 Daryl Kahan would also be located fronting Spanish band VOICE OF HATE.

Electro Hippies - The Peaceville Recordings

Electro Hippies was a crust punk/thrashcore band formed in St Helens/Wigan, United Kingdom in 1985.
Though they were short-lived and underground through their career, their music influenced many future crust, hardcore punk, and grindcore bands. The band relied heavily on low bass end sounds to create their low-fi, primitively-produced music. The band strongly embraced the D.I.Y. (do it yourself) ethic which was very common among many early crust punk bands. The band's lyrics spoke heavily about animal rights and vegetarianism. A reoccurring lyrical theme on each LP targeted the McDonalds corporation, evidenced by the lyrics to "Run Ronald" and "Scum". The Electro Hippies were most notable for including Jeff Walker (guitar, vocals) in their ranks. He later would join extreme metal band Carcass. When Jeff joined Carcass full time, Simon (drums) and Andy (guitar) assumed vocal duties in the band. Eventually, the band split up sometime in 1989, playing one last gig and releasing the show as their final album.

The Vibrators - Live Near The Seedy Mill Golf Club

With a career lasting thirty-one years, vocalist/guitarist IAN "KNOX" CARNOCHAN, bassist PAT COLLIER, guitarist JOHN ELLIS and drummer EDDIE originally formed the VIBRATORS in February 1976, and their first gig was supporting THE STRANGLERS at Hornsey Art College in North London. They supported THE SEX PISTOLS at the 100 CLUB and were one of the bands playing at the now legendary 100 CLUB PUNK ROCK FESTIVAL, where as well as doing their own set they supported guitar hero CHRIS SPEDDING. CHRIS recommended the band to his then record company, RAK. The band's debut single "WE VIBRATE" came out in November (one of the first punk singles) and was followed two weeks later by CHRIS SPEDDING'S "POGO DANCING" single with the VIBRATORS as the band on that.
Early in 1977 the band supported IGGY POP (with DAVID BOWIE on keyboards) on a UK tour, then moved to EPIC RECORDS and released the classic "BABY BABY" single, followed by their first album "PURE MANIA" which spent five weeks in the UK Top 75, peaking at number 49. A second single from the album - but a live version - "LONDON GIRLS", came out in the summer of 1977 and was promoted by a tour supporting ex-MOTT THE HOOPLE mainman IAN HUNTER. Bassist PAT COLLIER left soon after and was replaced by GARY TIBBS. The band released the single "AUTOMATIC LOVER" (March 1978), which not only reached 35 in the charts but also got the band on TOP OF THE POPS. A second LP, "V2" was released in April and reached number 33 in the British Charts, and is still regarded today as one of New Waves finest moments. JOHN ELLIS left soon after to follow a solo career and to work with PETER GABRIEL, and was replaced by DAVE BIRCH, whilst a fifth member was added with keyboard/saxophonist DON SNOW. However this line up of the band only recorded the "JUDY SAYS (KNOCK YOU IN THE HEAD)" single (a UK No 70 single in the summer of 1978). There then followed a new line up of the band: KNOX - guitar/vocals, EDDIE - drums, with new members BEN BRIERLY - bass, and GREG VAN COOK - guitar. This again proved to be short lived and KNOX left to have a go at being a solo artist towards the end of 1978.

The Ruts - Live At Deeply Vale

The sound quality is rough and the band is certainly raw, but there's so much excitement bleeding out of this disc that it's difficult to fault it for any of the failings that would normally condemn a recording of this nature. When the Ruts appeared at the 1978 Deeply Vale Festival they were still largely unheard outside of London (and a very small part of that as well). But, having traveled up to the festival with friends Misty in Roots, the quartet put on a fiery show that already blisters with all the manic magic that the Ruts would soon be taking nationwide, and a repertoire that would remain more or less intact until their debut LP was recorded. Then as now, "Babylon's Burning" and the dramatic dub stylings of "Jah Wars" illustrate the band at its incendiary best; several of the other songs do fall a little too close to rentapunk basics to endure protracted listens. But slam the disc into the player and pump up the volume, and you will understand why the Ruts remain so highly regarded today, no matter how short-lived they turned out to be.

Agriculture Club - Farmageddon

While most contemporary trends in alt-country tend towards the earnest and the sparse, Calgary’s Agriculture Club sow their sonic seeds with the hard-hitting ferocity of a drunken tractor fight. This latest full-length effort from the Stetson-sporting quartet kicks off with a muscled-up, spaghetti western-style instrumental lifted straight out of the Ennio Morricone songbook before being doused in purple gasoline and set ablaze in the burning barrel. A triptych of trucking songs follows, each one written and presented with enough knowing confidence to suggest these Cowtowners have probably run real rigs through a dozen-or-so gears on more than a few occasions. The band maintain a keen balance between rip-snorting rock and wailing twang throughout the disc’s dozen tracks without getting bogged down in formulaic ground. Though the tunes are typically informed with humour, a prevailing element of reverence indicates these guys take their rock a little more seriously than appearances may suggest. -- Chuck Molgat, Exclaim Magazine

Deadbolt - Hobo Babylon

Deadbolt is a rock band from San Diego, California, U.S.A.. They describe themselves as "The Scariest Band in the World". The band often features two bass players who are called "The Wall of Thunder." The band originally formed in 1987 as a trio featuring guitarist and vocalist Harley Davidson, bassist and vocalist Robert "RA" MacLean and drummer Les Vegas. Vegas eventually left the band. Vegas' departure is chronicled in the song "Po' Boy" on the album Hobo Babylon. Other current members of the band include bassist Gary "3rd Degree" Burns, and drummer Bad Time Charlie. Former members of the band include The Phantom (bass and guitar), Tank Johnson (drums), Claymore Mines (bass), The Coroner (bass), Coffin Boy (bass), and Moose Cutter (bass). Vocalist/guitarist Diana Death occasionally contributes.
Deadbolt's music combines surf rock, goth, psychobilly and blues sound with unusual and offbeat lyrics, a style the band dubbed "voodoobilly." Besides the release of several CDs, the band has toured both North America and Europe extensively. Harley Davidson currently resides at Disgraceland, a palatial shack located near the Mission Beach Jack-in-the Box. The band is known for it's use of power tools during their live sets, and it is customary to be showered with sparks of red-hot metal during their live shows. Three members of the band were also in a short-lived offshoot group called The Strangers 1800, which performed music from Spaghetti Western films and TV westerns and released one EP, When Men Were Men and the Sheep Were Scared.

Cryptic Slaughter - Money Talks

The American thrash metal band Cryptic Slaughter first was born in the summer of 1984 by three guys named Les Evans, Scott Peterson and Adam Scott who were between 14 and 17 years old and met through their love for soccer which they all played. Another soccer player named Bill Crooks joined in the fall as school started. Soon Adam was kicked out since he started missing rehearsals, probably a result of his parents disliking of him being in the band, both being teachers and wanting something else from their son. They first appeared to the world in 1985 with their "Life In Grave" demo tape. Shortly after the recording of their album "Stream Of Consciousness" vocalist Bill Crooks and drummer Scott Peterson decided to leave the music business and the band broke up. However guitarist Les Evans and bass player Rob Nicholson recruited new members and continued for some time. In September 1985 they played an important show with DRI, Descendents and Excel (September 13th, 1985 in Sun Valley at the Sportmen Hall). The next morning Les Evans had a package in the mail from Brian Slagel's lawyer with record contracts for the Metal Massacre compilations and full-length LP. In May 1989 Evans relocated to Portland, Oregon, where he reformed Cryptic Slaughter with a new line-up. However, after touring in the autumn of 1990 the band broke up again. A new reunion took place but in January 2003 Bill Crooks left and not much has been heard from them since. The "Conviction" and "Money Talks" albums were re-released in 2003

Cryptic Slaughter - Speak Your Peace

Speak Your Peace is the fourth and final album from crossover thrash/hardcore punk band, Cryptic Slaughter. It was released in 1990 on Metal Blade Records and follows 1988's Stream of Consciousness. Actually, the band had split up following the 1988 album and remaining member, Les Evans, relocated from California to Oregon and reformed with three new members – including former Wehrmacht drummer, Brian Lehfeldt. The resulting album was quite a change in style for the band, moving from their hardcore punk roots more to a crossover thrash sound, complete with quirky rhythms and melodies. The band again split shortly after this release.

Young Heart Attack - Mouthful of Love

One of the most important things that a band can do is come up with a good name. It may seem simple, but it can determine whether a band sinks or swims. Good band have sunk due to a bad name, bad bands have flourished with a good name behind them. Young Heart Attack is a good name for a rock band. The album cover has a Flying V guitar on the bonnet of a Ford Mustang, which is supposed to look menacing, bleak but most of all delinquent. I think this is the same feel that the band themselves are trying to achieve. Young, delinquent twentysomethings who could not give a damn about, well, anything. It works on some levels, but the amount of effort that has gone in shows that they do care and that they are not the delinquent, rebellious filth that they perhaps think they are.
That said, what we do have is a rock 'n roll album that, despite only lasting half an hour, has enough energy to fuel the neon lights of Las Vegas, and so much so that you'd be able to see the lights from space. The energy that I talk off eeks and sweats from the songs and it's infectious almost to the point of annoyance. I must have played Starlite 10 times before I heard the rest of the album properly. The album has bite, attitude and swagger, but rather than James Dean, it's a high school impersonator since the excellent production on all the songs takes away some of the rebellion.
The opening, title track opens with a very familiar guitar riff and explodes from all directions as the riff loops and loops until the singers come in. This is where Young Heart Attack have the upper hand on many (not all) of their peers; two singers. Lead singers Chris Hodge and Jennifer Stephens duel and vie for microphone space like two banshee hounds on heat. It is this competition for the mic and the consequent confidence they take from each other that gives them something else. Starlite, Mouthful Of Love, To The Teeth - the songs when this duel fest is most apparent - are by far the best. The numbers where Chris takes more of the singing duties feel slightly less in comparison.
Draw comparisons from where you like, because there are many (the intro to The Who's Wont Get Fooled Again being the most obviously ripped-off part). Bands like The Darkness are compared to AC/DC much too readily; YHA have more grounds than most for comparison, but I think that with their spiralling guitar riffs, banshee singing, high production levels, The Datsuns, rather than The White Stripes or Led Zeppelin, are the yardstick by which to compare. As the seething guitars pound your speakers, one thing feels apparent in this music - how much fun the band seem to be having. Nowhere is this heard more clearly than in the break to MC5's Sick Of Doing Time. If you want a part of the fun, explore this album.

Workin' Stiffs - Dog Tired and Then Some

San Fran street punk. This re-issue of the legendary, out-of-print debut includes new (old?) takes of hits from some early vinyl EPs also. It's quick, frenetic hollering; the verses and choruses are right there in your face. You are able to revisit the roots of some of the punk scene here and see why it took hold. Of special note are the bonus tracks, which offer two earlier versions of songs from the debut. "1974" and "New Man" are presented in their original versions, and, well, it's very hard to pick which ones of each that you'll enjoy more. It's always a treat to hear the evolution of a song, but here, you get to hear the raw, untreated versions, and they rawk. If you have/had a Mohawk, wish you ever had one, or just like the San Fran TKO street punk scene, this is a disc for you. Posers, get a listen of this for the real deal. (BW)

V.A. - Not So Quiet On The Western Front (Remastered)

No, it ain't the music of back-woods hillbillies or lonesome cowboys out on the range, but it's no less authentic or expressive of a unique moment in American culture. Perhaps we are still too close to this era to recognize what a spontaneous and authentic musical phenomenon took place in the days before hardcore punk became mired in its own cliches and formulas. I myself was a part of this scene, and my band, the Church Police, is one of the 49 groups from California and Nevada that fill this CD. Not all of the bands, but many, were what I call "suburban subdivision bedroom bands," because that's where we played some of our best music and, in a few cases, where some of these recordings were made.
It's hard to imagine a compilation that could have done a better job at representing what was happening in the punk scene at the time. There are a few of the big name S.F. bands, the Dead Kennedys and Flipper, that were main players in that era, but they don't dominate the collection (though Flipper's cut is probably the longest.) Instead, what strikes me most vividly now is the fresh sound and brashness of these bands. It's kind of funny listening to them, such a blend of hyped emotions, serious anger and alienation, but tempered by irony because most of the bands knew that they really weren't gonna go anywhere as far as a "career" was concerned. We were as interested in getting into the shows for free ("put me on your guest list!") and maybe winding up the night with 25 or 50 bucks in our pockets after all was said and done. You gotta love the spontaneity and craziness that these kids brought to their music. It would be incredible to have a reunion of these bands, not that too many of them are doing much with music these days, I imagine. I don't listen to a whole lot of underground hardcore these days, but if you want a top-notch sampler of the "real stuff" I recommend this without reservation.

Couch Of Eureka - Year of The Zombie

Chris Colland of Couch sez: We are from Eureka! (duh). A burned-out industrial town on the coast of North California. We formed in the summer of '93 and since have been on many '93 and since have been on several small tours, had many personal crises, put out a few recordings, lost a drummer and gained his cousin, amongst other things. More recently we have added the suffix "Of Eureka" to the name Couch for several reasons. When we formed we needed a name to play shows and that's as good as it got. Especially with the ever increasing list of one syllable bands, We soon realized we didn't like the name. Helping us along with the name change was the band Couch from Ann Arbor Michigan with the same name threatening legal action upon seeing our debut 7". TA MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT, NEITHER OF US HAD A COPYRIGHT ON THE NAME COUCH AND SINCE THEN COUCH OF ANN ARBOR have broken up and we changed our name anyway. Oh well...
This record is taste of zombie action, some sweet sharp teeth in your neck. Derailed pop music from the last frontier of culture on the west coast, Eureka California. This is an arresting and engaging melodic catastrophe. The Couch of Eureka span the musical spectrum with noticeable influences such as the Replacements (check out their cover version of -I'm In Trouble') and the Spacemen Three. Produced by Greg Freeman, who has worked with Smog, Pell Mell, and The Thinking Fellers Local Union 242. The vinyl version of this record is limited to 1000 copies, and the CD contains the recordings from this group's debut seven inch ( and has an incredible cover of -Three Girl Rhumba' by Wire). The Couch Of Eureka has created one of the most charged pieces of music in 1996. It whispers like a lover, but bites like an alligator.

Strike Anywhere - Exit English

Though not as groundbreaking as the hype would suggest, Strike Anywhere's Exit English is an inflammatory and always on-the-verge political punk album. Like Avail and Lifetime, Strike Anywhere melds melodicism and hooks to unrelenting hardcore intensity. It makes for a record that is as fun as it is serious -- equal parts pogo punk and agitprop anti-authoritarianism. Songs like "Blaze" and "To the World" sound like an East Coast version of the Offspring circa Smash -- certainly high praise in terms of catchiness. And even if sometimes the band is a bit heavy-handed ("The voices of the people will come down like rain!"), Strike Anywhere plays music that is the arena rock of punk: shout-along choruses ("Lights Go Out"), spiraling riffs, vocal chord-thrashing screams. The only real drawback is that while bands like the Blood Brothers, the Mars Volta, and the Weakerthans are pushing punk music into markedly different (from each other) and strikingly fresh terrain, Strike Anywhere seems to be firmly planted in the moment during 1994 when the hardcore scene finally really embraced melody -- not a bad place to be, but the members of Strike Anywhere have more in them than that.
