THE OPPRESSED: Skinhead Times 1982-1998 (Double CD)

The Oppressed is a Welsh anti-fascist Oi! band that was formed in 1981 in Cardiff. Most of the musicians in the band's various lineups were skinheads. Throughout the band's career, the members (especially vocalist Roddy Moreno) openly expressed opposition to racism and fascism; in their lyrics, interviews, on-stage comments and other actions. In 1989, Moreno visited New York City and met many members of Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice (SHARP) members. On his return to the United Kingdom, he started promoting SHARP ideals to British skinheads. The band has also had ties to other anti-racist groups, such as Anti-Fascist Action.
The band's lead singer, Roddy Moreno, is a Cardiff City F.C. supporter.

COYOTE SHIVERS: 1/2 a Rock & Roll Record [EP]

He's funny, he's talented, and he's as punk as they come. Why is he not more popular??? As I watch MTV w/ a down-turned grin, I see bands like Sum 41, Good Charlotte, and Avril Lavigne gaining heavy airplay... yet Coyote isn't even heard of by fans of them, or by many punk fans. Why is this??
Punk is such a cliched term today. It has become more of a style than a type of music or lifestyle, and as disappointing as that is, it's the truth... and may very well be the reason that Coyote isn't that well-known. He has too much talent, too much humor, and too much pinache for the normal rock fan to appreciate. However, if you are one of the few people left that enjoys good music, try this, fans of Richard Hell's Television and The Ramones especially. "Secretly Jealous of Kurt Cobain" is an incredibly amusing song about wanting to kill himself to become famous like Kurt, and "Plus One" is a sort-of tribute song to The Ramones final show, as well as an invitation to an un-named girl to join him... those are personally my favorite songs, and this is personally one of my favorite albums at this moment. --- Megan Lyon

HOOKERS: Satan's Highway

Ok folks. Let me start by simply saying that if you do not own this album you are one deprived fool. In fact I feel for you. This baby hasn't left my cd changer since I got it many months ago. This is quite simply one of the most intense, hell-raising, high voltage punk n' roll albums Ive heard in the past few years. It's raw, it's gritty....it just plain and simply will kick your feeble little ass. For simplicity, lets just refer to the Hookers sound as "maximum overdrive." I'm on a quest to make this an actual musical term, especially with the resurgance of pure rock n roll in its most raw, aggressive form. The album starts out with the title track "Satan's Highway." Ferocious. Agood preparation for the onslaught that follows. The best tunes are the title track, "Hometown Slut," "Baby You'll Regret Me," "Welcome The Beast" and "Soul Taker" ( which happens to be my personal fave ). But ALL of the tracks are good. The only track on this whole album that I sometimes find myself pushing the skip button on is "Back Alley Trash." But hey, 12 out of 13 is still a 5 star album in my book. Folks, do yourselves a favor and GET THIS ALBUM NOW! I can't say enough good things about these guys. It's hard to believe that Nashville Pussy are so widely recognized and the Hookers are going unrecognized by many. The Hookers are SO much better in every way....( though I must admit, I would rather look at NP's guitarist and bassist than The Rock N' Roll Outlaw ).Be sure you seek yourselves out a vinyl copy as well. You'll have fun spinning the record backwards and listening to all of the supremely evil and horrendous messages they backmasked into the album. Just dont ask me what those messages are, cause if I told ya I'd have to kill ya...... --- Mike Rutherford

SONNY VINCENT: Parallax in Wonderland

Wayne Kramer on guitars , Captain Sensible on bass and the TESTOR's former Sonny Vincent on vocals.. nothing more need to be sayed about this album.. If you have a brain..GET IT FAST!!!

Biography (All Music Guide)
Native New Yorker and lifelong rocker Sonny Vincent is a testament to the spirit of music. Living illegally at age 13 in a girls' dormitory, playing guitar and singing by age 14, and in and out of reform schools not soon after, Vincent rocked harder before he was 18 than most people do in a lifetime.
Sonny Vincent founded the Testors in 1976, a group which served as an incubator for his burgeoning talent. A two-guitar outfit featuring a drummer without cymbals, the trio made up for their lack of seasoning with a surplus of attitude. Eventually, they added a bass player, wrote songs with three chords, and embarked on an American tour with punk stalwarts the Dead Boys. In 1980, after an intense period of performing and violence -- often at the same time -- Vincent was committed to New York State's Windale mental hospital. But soon he was back in the Big Apple, dabbling in filmmaking and multimedia art. Vincent left the city in 1981 and relocated to Minneapolis, where he promptly started a band. Sonny Vincent & the Extreme released a few singles and did some touring; they also suspended action for a few months so their fearless leader could serve an eight-month term in the gray bar hotel. read more >>>

EPOXIES: Epoxies

Discharging a ferocious batch of punk rock tunes propelled by powerful signs of new wave and pop, the Epoxies categorically offer a daring punk mixture. Formed in Portland, OR, in 2000, the band features a five-piece lineup commanded by vocalist Roxy Epoxy alongside Shock Diode (bass), Viz Spectrum (guitar), Doctor Grip (drums), and Moxie Static (keyboards, vocals). The single "We Are Sold Out," the group's first record issued via the Seattle-based Dirtnap Records label, confirmed the crew's inventive aptitude and audacious tunes, opening the way for the recording of their first album. In March of 2002, the Epoxies presented their self-titled full-length debut, again through the Dirtnap logo, confirming their recognition within the punk rock scene way beyond their state frontiers. The band next released Stop the Future on Fat Wreck in May 2005.— Mario Mesquita Borges, All Music Guide

ADOLESCENTS: O.C. Confidential

Reunion albums can be tricky. All too often, in worst case scenarios, it becomes obvious the band just doesn't cut it anymore. This is not the case with O.C. Confidential, the first Adolescents album since 1988's Balboa Fun Zone. Fans will be pleased with this particular lineup as it features original members Tony "Reflex" Cadena (vocals), Steve Soto (bass), and Rikk Agnew (guitar), rounded out by Frank Agnew (guitar), and drummer Derek O'Brien from Social Distortion. These 13 songs are a bit slower and more melodic than previous releases and a few are blatantly political: "Hawks and Doves," "Lockdown America," and "Guns of September." The band isn't spitting out Orange County punk with the energy they were once known for, nor are they simply rehasing the style of their early-'80s single "Amoeba," which was an underground hit via the Rodney on the ROQ radio show. O.C. Confidential plainly gives an honest representation of where the Adolescents have been since 1988. Thankfully not rehashing hardcore cliches. ~ Al Campbell, All Music Guide

RIVER CITY RAPISTS: Love Hurts

Holy Shi-ite!
Can't believe people are selling this CD for as much as $100!!!
I'm flattered to death but I've got plenty left to sell for $15 post-paid.
Story is that my partner & I @ Junk Records never realized that the cover artwork was kind of a tilted swastika formed by 4 chix legs. Although we never condoned censorship at Junk for any of our artists, this would have never flew if we realized it at first. Back cover artwork was controversial enough (pregnant chick smoking and drinking a bottle of brandy) but the Motards already did it on their first Empty Records disc.
So our counterpart at Nitro Records, Brian "Dexter" Holland's (singer from the Offspring) label who used to manufacture and distribute Junk, figures it out and puts the word out to all of our distributors that it's not gonna be available since Nitro is refusing to release it. Basically, none of the big chains got it but all of our Mom & Pop distros did, so ya woulda had to buy it at an indie records store back then.We also pressed 1000 on pink vinyl but that's all gone. So hit me up at my e-mail address if ya don't want to pay thru yer noses! --- Lou Screw "Lou Screw"

THE DRAGONS:- Cheers to Me

1990: Mario Escovedo and Kenny Mochikoshi Horne are in a local San Diego punk band called M-80. By years end, they decide that they want to go in a more Rock 'n' Roll direction, so they wrote ten songs and put an ad in the San Diego Reader. First to answer was bassist Steve Rodriguez. The three auditioned drummers and James Barczak completed the first Dragons line up.
February 1991: The Dragons recorded a five-song demo and a month later they played the South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival in Austin, Texas. Later that year, they recorded another five-song demo and returned to SXSW(1992) for a second time.
August 1992: The Dragons release a 12 song vinyl LP "X" in Spain on Impossible Records.
August 1993: The Dragons set out on their first regional tour of the Southwest ending with another show in Austin, TX. When they returned they parted ways with drummer Barczak. A few weeks later, at the San Diego Independent Music Seminar The Dragons met up with Jarrod Lucas, who kept asking Mario to buy him drinks, which lead to an audition and
job as the new Dragons drummer. Jarrod is still 'beatin' the skins' for The Dragons to this day of course, and the Jack 'n' Cokes are still flowin' too!
September 1994: The band returns to the studio to record the 4 song "Los Maricones de Rock" 7" EP on Pop Tones records, released in early 1995.
Spring 1996: The Dragons record and release their debut CD Pain Killer on local label Scam - O - Rama, run by their long time pal Ted Tarris (Inebria-Ted) of Flipside fanzine. Some of the tracks on this underground classic are still main staples of the bands live set to this day.
August 1996: The Dragons release a track on the Keep The Beat compilation on Hairball 8 Records. That winter finds The Dragons on their first Northwest Tour, highlighted by an appearance at one of the legendary Incredibly Strange Wrestling shows in San Francisco, >>>>> http://www.thedragons.com/

THE DRAGONS: Live at The Casbah

March 1997: The band tours with Pansy Division to SXSW. One of the highlights being a memorable show with Guitar Wolf on a blistering night in Dallas.
Fall 1997: The Dragons sign with Junk Records and record the album Cheers to Me. Released in 1988, it was the first Dragons' release to get worldwide distribution and major attention. It also holds up remarkably well and remains a classic. Later that year the band
released songs on the Drunk on Rock Vol. 1 CD, the Gearhead Magazine/Lookout! Records compilation All Punk Rods, Staring At The Sun Vol. 4 on Blind Spot Records, and of course Junk Records own infamous compilation, Goin' After Pussy.
April/May 1999: The band records it's 2nd full length release for Junk Records with Jeff Forrest (who also recorded Cheers To Me) at Doubletime Studios in El Cajon. Entitled R.L.F. (Rock Like Fuck) after a tour of the same name by Michael Monroe of Hanoi Rocks, it's the strongest and most straight forward Dragons release yet.
December 1999: On Christmas Eve the band performs an all Rolling Stones set at the sixth annual "Exile on Kettner Boulevard" show at The Casbah Club. Three days later at the same venue, they record "Live at The Casbah" which becomes their third release for Junk Records.

SCREAM: Still Screaming & This Side Up

Though known primarily as Dave Grohl's first band of note, Scream in fact released its finest material years before Grohl's entry into the band. After the primary wave of D.C. hardcore -- SOA, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Government Issue -- crashed noisily to the shore, kids from the surrounding suburbs, attracted by the sound and fury of the city center, began formulating sounds predicated certainly on the first wave, but with enough outsider flair to be considered unique. Scream was one such band, and probably the finest. Boasting the incredibly gifted vocalist Pete Stahl and his brother Franz on guitar (the two later formed Wool), and rounded out by the rhythm section of Kent Stax and Skeeter Thompson, Scream fought their way into the tightly knit in-scene of D.C. hardcore, and were initially greeted with suspicion as suburban rednecks. Indeed, Scream's music borrowed as much from classic rock -- especially on This Side Up -- as it did from Minor Threat's lockstep speed. The band's first release, Still Screaming, shows the band maturing, trying out the fast stuff, testing their feet in the Bad Brains reggae pool, talking about scene solidarity, etc. It's a solid record, bolstered by the Stahl brothers' deft ability to make an ordinary song truly soar with melody. Unlike most other hardcore bands, Scream was never blunt with its music. Of course, this was probably due to Pete Stahl's vocal talent, which was truly showcased on the follow-up, This Side Up. For all its glory -- "Bet You Never Thought" is a brilliantly crafted piece of anthemic rock -- This Side Up has a few duds, like the pointless castoff "Gluesniff." By the time of This Side Up, Scream had found its voice, and that voice owed a lot more to suburban rock than to the elitist hardcore found in the city. A D.C. hardcore classic. --- Patrick Kennedy, All Music Guide

STIFF LITTLE FINGERS: Song by Song (Link Updated!!)

A taut, explosive Belfast-based punk band, Stiff Little Fingers (named after a Vibrators song) had the dubious distinction of being referred to as "The Irish Clash." What must have seemed like a compliment at the time did little to help their career, only because it made comparisons between the two bands inevitable. Granted, there were many similarities: both bands debuted playing revved-up late-'70s punk rock, were politically inclined, featured pissed-off lead singers, had a love for reggae, and possessed a near-palpable sense of isolation and desperation. But as we all know, the Clash offered complexity, panache, and a consistently breathtaking body of work. Stiff Little Fingers, on the other hand, were simply a very good punk rock band. With sandpaper-throated frontman Jake Burns leading the way, SLF did release an auspicious, if badly produced, debut album, Inflammable Material, that featured the band's two best songs, "Alternative Ulster" and "Suspect Device." Both were passionate, ferocious songs dealing with the harsh, deadly realities of growing up in the middle of two decades of Northern Ireland's violence. These songs thrust SLF into the limelight and got them loads of enthusiastic press, which led to a contract with the decidedly anti-punk Chrysalis label in 1980. After that, SLF released a handful of pretty good records (including a terrific live album, Hanx), but their unregenerate fast and loud punk style started to sound stale. In 1982, the band released their most non-punk record (Now Then...), which was greeted by general apathy. In a musical rut, dogged by the facile Clash comparisons, and with punk rock running out of steam, Burns pulled the plug on SLF. --- John Dougan, All Music Guide

DEAD KENNEDYS: (1980) - Fresh Fruit for Rotten Vegetables

A hyper-speed blast of ultra-polemical, left-wing hardcore punk, and bitingly funny sarcasm, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables stands as the Dead Kennedys' signature statement. As one of the first hardcore albums, it was a galvanizing influence on the musical and attitudinal development of the genre, also helping to kickstart the fertile California scene. The record's tactics are not subtle in the least; Jello Biafra's odd warble and spat-out lyrics leave no doubt as to what he thinks, baiting his targets of conservatism, violence, overbearing authority, and capitalist greed with a viciously satirical sarcasm that keeps his unflinchingly political outlook from becoming too didactic. The thin production dilutes some of the music's power, but the ragged speed-blur still packs a wallop, and the hooks cribbed from surf and rockabilly give it a gonzo edge. The songwriting isn't consistent all the way through the album, but classics like "Kill the Poor," "Let's Lynch the Landlord," "Chemical Warfare," "California Über Alles," and "Holiday In Cambodia" helped define the hardcore genre and, thus, must be heard. --- Steve Huey, All Music Guide

DEAD KENNEDYS: (1982) - Plastic Surgery Disasters + In God We Trust (ep)

This is my favorite Dead Kennedy's release. I will side-step the DK's current soap opera for a moment to review this disc. First of all, the Dead Kennedys were probably one of the most well-round, musically talented bands to emerge from the punk scene in the early '80's. East Bay Ray, Klaus Flouride, and D.H. Peligro were some of the best musicians ever to be called punk rock. No one else sounded like the Dead Kennedys. The "In God We Trust, Inc." EP was the DK's nod to DC-style hardcore. Its filled with hyperspeed jams that, unlike much of the hardcore that was emerging, is filled with great riffs and, despite the speed, just a great sense of what makes a good song, not just simple 3 chord verses and sing-along chorus. The jazz into to "We Got A Bigger Problem Now". "Plastic Surgery Disasters" is again filled with hyperspeed thrash, but its also tempered with influences of surf (especially "Moon Over Marin") and spaghetti western music (just listen to "Winnebago Warrior"). The fact that the group wrote much of this album as a whole is probably to a big reason for that. All throughout, Jello Biafra's lyrics are smart and funny. --- Patrick T. Grady

DEAD KENNEDYS: (1985) Frankenchrist

Released after a three-year studio hiatus, this album picks up right where Plastic Surgery Disasters left off. As always, the lyrics are among the most literate and angry in all of rock & roll. "Goons of Hazard" scores the culture of guns and the rednecks who love them, utilizing full-textured hard rock to set the verses. "Soup Is Good Food" lacerates the concept of disposable people in disposable jobs, pairing this idea with repeated guitar riff-based music that suggests a nightmare version of 1960s songs. "Jock-O-Rama" excoriates organized sports and macho attitudes; musically, the outer sections wed rockabilly and hardcore influences, sandwiching a slow middle section that spoofs martial numbers like Barry Sadler's "Ballad of the Green Berets." "This Could Be Anywhere" has critical lyrics about racism and classicism set to music highly reminiscent of the Sex Pistols. "Hellnation" has garbled, wide-range, muckracking verses set to stun-speed punk that recalls numbers from In God We Trust Inc. The excellent "MTV -- Get Off the Air" lambastes the corporate influences on rock & roll; musically, the song exhibits a tripartite structure, using a vacuously poppy opening, a speed hardcore central section, and a mid-tempo rocking finale that prominently features trumpet (a very brief coda reprise of hardcore ends the number). The finest selection on this album (and perhaps in the whole Dead Kennedys' canon) is the anthemic "Stars and Stripes of Corruption." This number also utilizes a three-part construct, consisting here of a hard-rocking midsection flanked by faster, punk-oriented material. The verses here are stunningly detailed, describing what the band believes is wrong with the United States and what the solutions should be. This wonderful and challenging album is very highly recommended. --- by David Cleary, All Music Guide

DEAD KENNEDYS: (1986) - Bedtime for Democracy

This album is the pinnacle of the DKs creative expression. Tight, fast-paced performances are highlighted, and the lyrics on this disc put Jello Biafra among the elite of lyrical genius alongside the likes of Roger Waters, Jim Morrison, Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa, Ian Anderson, Neil Peart. DEAD KENNEDYS: (1987) - Give Me Convenience of Give Me Death

Track for track and album after album, the Dead Kennedys were the most relentlessly political and controversial stateside punk rock band to gain much public notoriety. Originally released in 1987, Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death collects 17 of the band's singles, compilation tracks, and rarities spanning the eight years they played together. This is a wide and deep collection of favorites like "California Über Alles" and "Holiday in Cambodia," but the real reason to pick up this disc is the more obscure and rare material. From 1979, "Night of the Living Rednecks" has hyperactive mouthpiece Jello Biafra relating a tale of being chased by irate rednecks while the rhythm sections jams. Their version of "I Fought the Law" rewrites it into a true-to-life murder ballad, while rippers like "Life Sentence," "Insight," "Pull My Strings" and "Straight A's" are off the map unless you were lucky enough to pick up the original singles or compilations that they're pulled from. And "Kinky Sex Makes the World Go 'Round" is Biafra at his sarcastic best, as he tells of one corporate head instructing another on the economic necessity of a new war. The DKs were a truly important and relevant band, and Give Me Convenience provides 17 livid reasons why. Boy, could we use them now. --Carl Hanni

DEAD KENNEDYS: (2001) Mutiny on the Bay

The first-ever authorized live album by the Dead Kennedys--following decades of bootlegs--is a DKs fan dream come true, as it contains absolutely scorching live versions of 14 of their best and most notorious songs. Whether live or in the studio, the DKs were always real players, easily some of the most accomplished musicians in American punk. Mutiny on the Bay captures their savvy, sophisticated chaos with juicy, startling clarity. Culled from four shows in their hometown of San Francisco in 1982 and 1986, Mutiny features most of their signature songs ("Holiday in Cambodia," "Police Truck," "California Über Alles," "MTV Get off the Air," etc.), all delivered with the deeply sarcastic, politically and socially confrontational élan that crowds loved and the powers-that-be loathed. The sound quality is bracing and brilliant, and captures the band in all its high-flying, punk rock/thrash/surf glory. A time bomb wired from the last, Mutiny on the Bay is easily one of the Dead Kennedys' most essential releases. --Carl Hanni

DEAD KENNEDYS: (2004) Live at the Deaf Club

This is a great CD, which is important to say right up front. If it weren't for the lawsuit between Jello and the rest of the former DK's there would not be any controversy over this recording. Despite the ugliness of that legal battle (irrespective of which side you plant yourself), this CD delievers where MANY 20+ year old recordings do not. It simply sounds great, a not so inconsequential achievement for a punk recording given the paucity of both funds and quality recording equipment typically available to such bands at that time. In addition, there are several unreleased songs on this recording (most notably "Gaslight," which is great) and Jello is in rare form. Sure, there are a few glitches in the performance (there always will be in "true" live recordings; note: Performance glitches, not recording), but this is the last show with 6025, so c'mon! stop with the punk posturing and just enjoy this CD for the rare document that it is. In my opinion, this recording is better than the "Mutiny on the bay" recording, which is also great despite the mudraking that also surrounded it's release. Bands like this do not exist anymore and any bootleg of the Kennedys that you can get your hands on will not come close to touching the quality of this disc. A disco version of "Kill the poor" an early version of "When you get drafted" (Back in Rhodesia) and a cover of the Honeycomb's "Have I the right" make this an essential document that you'd be a fool to miss --- Paul McDonough

SEX PISTOLS: Some Product Carri On Sex Pistols

Some Product: Carri on Sex Pistols is an interview album, an often overlooked curiosity in the Sex Pistols' catalogue, though the record has been reissued on CD even after the group managed to win back control over their band name and recordings. The interviews are mostly presented in a collage style. Highlights include Sid Vicious telling the listener to "Buy my record and make me a millionaire!" and Paul Cook and Steve Jones' hilarious appearance on an American radio show. It also features audio from the band's infamous appearance on the TV show Today which received a number of complaints from viewers due to their use of bad language.
The Sex Pistols were always famous for their controversial and humorous interviews, and with suitably iconoclastic Jamie Reid artwork, this unconventional (and patently unmusical) album managed to climb to #6 in the UK album charts. The title is a pun on the word carrion which means a dead animal, and many sex pistols compilations after their break up referenced the fact that they were not together for very long.
** All tracks are spoken word collages put together by John Varnom from various interviews and radio ads. Additional material includes a snippet from Tubular Bells.
