999: Face To Face (1985)

One of the longest-lived groups of the punk era, 999 formed in London in December 1976. Led by vocalist/guitarist Nick Cash, a onetime student at the Canterbury College of Art under the tutelage of Ian Dury and a former member of the pub rock units Kilburn and the High Roads, the band also included guitarist Guy Days, bassist Jon Watson, and drummer Pablo LaBrittain. After dispensing with a series of names -- including 48 Hours, the Fanatics, and the Dials -- 999 quickly established themselves as a popular fixture on the London punk circuit, issuing their incendiary debut single, "I'm Alive," on their own LaBrittain Records in late 1977.

G.B.H.: Cruel & Unusual (2004)

By the early 21st century, G.B.H. had been thrashing away for two decades. And as evidenced by a pair of EPs issued around this time, 1998's Punk as Fuck! and 2001's Punk Rock Ambulance, the group hadn't lost any of their youthful fury.
With both releases out of print (which were each split releases with Billyclub), the Idol label combined all the G.B.H. tracks from each release, and reissued them as Cruel and Unusual in 2004. Half studio tracks and half live tracks (recorded in Leeds, England during 2002), standouts include the Rancid-esque "No," the murky "Last of the Teenage Idols," as well as a blitzkrieg reading of the early G.B.H. classic "Time Bomb." G.B.H. continue to stick to their guns (and original musical path) on Cruel and Unusual. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

Toy Dolls: Singles 1983-1984

Long-lived punk outfit Toy Dolls formed in Sunderland, England, in October of 1979, originally comprising singer Pete Zulu (born Peter Robson), guitarist Olga (Michael Algar), bassist Flip (Philip Dugdale), and drummer Mr. Colin Scott. Within a month, and after just a handful of gigs, Zulu left the group, the first in a seemingly endless number of lineup changes to follow in the coming years; with new frontman HudOlga agreed to assume vocal duties, and the remaining Toy Dolls continued as a trio. By the time the group's debut single, "Tommy Kowey's Car," followed in mid-1980, Mr. Scott had exited the lineup as well, with a procession of drummers filling in before the arrival of Teddy Toy Doll (aka Graham Edmundson) toward the end of the year. A handful of compilation tracks including "She's a Worky Ticket" and "Deirdre's a Slag" (a potshot at Coronation Street star Deirdre Barlow) further cemented Toy Dolls' absurdist leanings, and following the exit of Teddy Toy Doll the group tapped drummer Happy Bob (aka Robert Kent, who had previously teamed with Olga in the Showbiz Kids) as his replacement, issuing a self-financed, self-titled EP in September of 1981.

P.A.W.N.S.: Power and Wealth Need Slaves

P.A.W.N.S. (an acronym meaning Power And Wealth Need Slaves) is frenetic, funny and tight, playing unusual punk music with amazing tag team female/male vocals and a sound like Crass hitting the Avengers with X’ s van. This band out of Santa Cruz writes satirical songs about technology, hypocrisy, religion, consumerism, suicide, war and the daily grind, among other things. This new CD gives an excellent near-political summation of what the fuck is wrong with the world today, (namely the USA) without taking any of the fun from their near perfect rock musicality. P.A.W.N.S. are a hard working band with heart and brains. Don’t be afraid. Consume, you guilty bastards. This band will leave you with a knowing, full smile.

VA: Gabba Gabba Hey - A Tribute to the Ramones (1991)

Given how tremendous an influence the Ramones had on punk, new wave and alternative rock, they were certainly well deserving of a tribute album. Triple X delivered exactly that with 1991's Gabba Gabba Hey, which finds no less than 22 rock acts providing Ramones covers. The collection falls short of being fabulous, although it's well intended and often fun. The CD's most interesting cuts range from Nixon's rockabilly-ish remake of "Rockaway Beach" and L7's Joan Jett-influenced version of "Suzy Is A Headbanger" to the Flower Leperds' snarling take on "Commando." Pigmy Love Circus gives "Beat on the Brat" an inspired heavy metal makeover, while Blast's version of "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue" bridges the gap between punk and psychedelic hard rock. A few of the tunes are forgettable, but on the whole, this is an enjoyable, if a bit uneven, tribute to one of punk's pioneering outfits.by Alex Henderson

The name Oi Polloi is a pun on the English loan of the Greek phrase hoi polloi (Greek:Οι πολλοί) which means literally "the many", but is extended to mean "the masses" or "the common people". Oi! refers to a form of punk music.

H2O: All We Want (2002 - EP)

New York City hardcore band H2O began as a group of friends headed by Sick of It All roadie Toby Morse, who would perform a song called "My Love Is Real" at shows where there was no opening act. Crowd response encouraged the band to give music a serious try, and their initial membership featured Morse (vocals), Rusty Pistachio (guitar), Eric Rice (bass), and Max Capshaw (drums). H2O's ability to write catchy, melodic riffs while retaining hardcore's full-throttle rush, as well as their straight-edge sensibility and obvious love of hardcore originators like Minor Threat, got them a following along the East Coast. After a European tour in 1995, Capshaw left the band, and ex-Outcrowd members Todd Morse (guitar; Toby's brother) and Todd Friend (drums) joined. H2O opened for such bands as the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Rancid, and No Doubt, and their self-titled debut was released in 1996. Their second album, Thicker Than Water, was issued by Epitaph in 1997; it featured new bassist Adam Blake (ex-Shelter). F.T.T.W., the band's third album, was released in 1999. Two years later, the band signed to MCA and issued Go!. The All We Want EP appeared in fall 2002. by Steve Huey

Anti-Cimex: Criminal Trap (1986)

Anti-Cimex were a Swedish hardcore punk band that got together in the early 1980s. They were one of the first bands to define Scandinavian D-beat. The second 7" they released, Raped Ass, is considered to be a genre defining Scandinavian D-beat record. In 1986 they released a mini-Lp (12") called "Criminal Trap". (This 12" is also included as a bonus on the "Absolut Country of Sweden" CD). At this time Jocke had got tired of the band and they asked Cliff if he wanted to join the band but he said no, and the rest of the band members got tired of the problems and it resulted in the band splitting up.

OI POLLOI
Carson (2003)
Label: Nikt Nic Nie Wie
Format: EP
Ripped: mp3 (128kbps)
HHA Rating: 8,0
pw = hangoverhard.blogspot.com

Oi Polloi's first studio recording was a demo entitled Destroi the System, which is believed to have been released in 1984 or 1985. After the now defunct music weekly Sounds gave their previous home-recorded demo a favourable review, demand increased for gigs further afield. A second studio demo, Green Anarchoi followed before the release of the first vinyl offering, Resist the Atomic Menace. The line-up of the group has starred an impressive fifty members since their formation, making up the countless incarnations of the band. The band is currently based in Scotland.
Attacking world leaders and multi-national companies with humour and anger in different languages Enlarge Attacking world leaders and multi-national companies with humour and anger in different languages.
The band holds a political view which some call ultra-hardline ecologism, with the motto "No compromise in defence of our earth". They support direct action in defence of the environment, and endorse resistance against racialism, homophobia, fascism and imperialism. They are considered by many to be one of the premier faces of anarcho-punk. They have recently started singing in Scottish Gaelic and use the language in day to day communications. They see the use of Gaelic and other endangered languages as important to maintaining the biocultural diversity of life. They recently toured Europe with Seattle-based punk band Mill a h-Uile Rud who sing entirely in Scots Gaelic. Singer Ruairidh has recently become involved in Gaelic television and has appeared as Moses on a Gaelic comedy programme. Despite what some believe, the band did not start out as a "skinhead band" but was in fact formed by a bunch of teenage schoolkids who played their first gig at Stewarts Melville College in Edinburgh in late 1981. After numerous other gigs in the Edinburgh area and the recording of the group's first cassette demo "Last of the Mohicans" on a home hi-fi, drummer Stu "Doccy" Dunn left to become a karate instructor and was replaced by Muz who later recorded with the Apostles. Apostles and Political Asylum original drummer Chris Low also did a stint on the kit for a time while various other one time Oi Polloi members went on to play in such varied bands as Disorder, Exploited, Gin Goblins, Newtown Grunts, Moniack and In Decades Decline. Drummer Murray Briggs who played on several of the band's 7" records as well as the "Fuaim Catha" LP now plays in Scottish Indie band Aberfeldy along with brother Riley who himself had a brief spell as Oi Polloi guitarist back in the '90s. Brian Tipa was instrumental in writing a great deal of material for the band in the mid-1990s. He was a member of the American band Blownapart Bastards, who later formed Uwharria, and now plays in Robotnicka. David 'Rat' Connolly was the guitarist through much of the early years, playing his last gig and album in 1991. Rat wrote the music for classic songs such as Pigs for Slaughter and Boot down the Door, he went on to become an Archaeologist and Middle Eastern adventurer. Former bass player Calum Mckenzie (92-99) has since relocated to the US and now plays in the NYC based thrash/punk band Death Mold.
The name Oi Polloi is a pun on the English loan of the Greek phrase hoi polloi (Greek:Οι πολλοί) which means literally "the many", but is extended to mean "the masses" or "the common people". Oi! refers to a form of punk music.

pw = hangoverhard.blogspot.com

Budget-priced 1995 release on Castle featuring 210 minutesof ska from the '60s, '70s & '80s. Each of the four CDs have16 tracks. The first three are studio recordings; the lastis a live compilation. Features Bad Manners, Judge Dread,The Selecter, Pauline Black, Special Beat, The Loafers andmany others. Comes packaged as four CDs in standardjewel cases within a slipcase. This really is a great deal. It's 4 16-track discs of killer ska from some classic bands, and at a good price. This is the real deal too, it's not what passes for ska today (Reel Big Fish), but the good stuff from the 70's and 80's. It's the best collection I've seen since the "Max The Dog Says, Do The Ska" album. If you're into groups like "Judge Dread", "The Hotknives", "The Riffs", "Natural Rhythm", and "Bad Manners", then this set was made for you. Also, one of the discs is all live. STRIKE ANYWHERE
Chorus Of One (2001)
Label: Jade Tree Recs.
Format: CDEP
Ripped: JA mp3 (160kbps)
HHA Raing: 9,0
pw = hangoverhard.blogspot.com

As much of the country, and punk music, broke into political ambiguity and disinterest at the turn of the century, Richmond, VA.'s Strike Anywhere bucked the trend with Change is a Sound. Unintimidated by the recent "uncooling" of politics, vocalist Thomas Barnett wears his convictions on his sleeve, referencing Zinn, Goldman and historic antifascist movements. The band, meanwhile, makes no secret of its influences, playing melodic, energetic punk in the realm of Avail, Soulside or 7 Seconds. At home in a sweaty basement, a warehouse or a yawning club replete with stage lighting, Strike Anywhere comes with a cynics advisory warning.

M.D.C.
Magnus Dominus Corpus (2004)
Label: Sudden Death Records
Covers: Yes
Format: CD
Ripped: EAC mp3 (VBR)
HHA Rating: 10
pw = hangoverhard.blogspot.com

Formed in 1979 and playing their first gig in April 1980 they were one of the three bands in Austin, Texas, who pioneered hardcore punk in the early '80s alongside The Dicks and Big Boys , they were known prior to 1982 as The Stains. Magnus Dominus Corpus (2004) is MDC's 7th full length album with three of their four original members Dave Dictor (also Submissives), Ron Posner (ex-con-ron), Mikey Donaldson (founding member of The Offenders and Sister Double Happiness) and drum sensation Mike Pride (Dynamite Club).
The title is a Latin term taken from the returning Crusaders of the 13th century to term the intense hatred between the clashing Islamic and Christian cultures. Literally corpses of the ultimate dominators. This album debunks the world of George W. Bush, taking to task his utterance of the USA going on a modern day crusade against the Islamic terrorists. The war of good against evil. This album was internally called Millions Of Dea Contractors but out of respect for the foolish dead men's loved ones we went back to the roots of our culture clashes, the Middle Ages and their Crusades.
This 18 song hard hitting release of over the top social and political songs containing the wry wit that has been the trademark of MDC since it's 1982 debut album Millions of Dead Cops. New songs, about George W. and his crooked cronies plans for Destroying The Planet, the idealistic plea for us to Sleep A Little Less Dream A Little More, Poseur Punk about the scene hipsters and their fashion rules , Long Day Short Life about Dave's childhood friend's father's advice after his long work day , and Founding Fathers Terrorists Or Freedom Fighters which suggests we take a closer look at history and what defines a terrorist or a freedom fighter and much much more. BAD BRAINS
I Against I (1990)
Label: SST Records
Covers: Yes
Format: CD
Ripped: EAC mp3 (VBR - 256kbps)
HHA Rating: 10
pw = hangoverhard.blogspot.com

After the first of their countless breakups, the Bad Brains reconvened in 1986 to record this, their undeniable masterwork. Fusing dub reggae and funk rhythms into the mix, and slowing the tempo down enough to appeal to hardcore's emergent metal crossover audience, the Bad Brains created one of the most powerful collections the '80s produced in any genre. On "I Against I" and "House of Suffering," the quartet suffuses traditional Jamaican spiritualism with modern urban concerns, while the soaring "Sacred Love" is guaranteed to send shivers down the spine of anyone with any soul whatsoever. An essential release. --David Sprague

PEGBOY
Live at The Fireside Bowl (2000)
Format: Bootleg
Ripped: mp3 (192kbps)
HHA Rating: 10

Founding Naked Raygun member John Haggerty left the band around 1990 due to the their inactivity. He recruited his brother Joe to play drums, and along with former Bhopal Stiffs members Larry Damore and Steve Saylors, Pegboy was formed. They debuted the same year with an EP, and followed up with a full-length a year later. The band released three full lengths of genre defining melodic post-hardcore before disbanding in 2000. Notably, the EP Fore featured Mr. Steve Albini on bass. (http://www.tgrec.com/bands/band.php?id=16)

SEX PISTOLS
Live at Chelmsford Top Security Prison (1990)
Recording Date: 1976
Label: Restless
Format: CD
Ripped: mp3 (16okbps)
HHA Rating: 7,0
pw = hangoverhard.blogspot.com

Although Johnny Rotten and company failed to amuse the monarchy, the Sex Pistols did manage to entertain 500 or so persons detained at Her Majesty's pleasure with a show at a top security prison in Chelmsford on September 17, 1976, three days before their fabled 100 Club gig and 21 days before signing to EMI. Interesting fact: the Pistols' nice-guy Paul Cook, who began his apprenticeship as an electrician at Watney's Brewers that very day, turned up drunk and proceeded to fall off his drum stool--an event sadly not captured on this mix-board recording. Much audio negligence is in evidence throughout--in fact, Glen Matlock's bass is completely inaudible. Still, this impudent live shambles has plenty of Rotten's lip and cackling menace and--while hardly as essential as Never Mind the Bollocks--reminds us just how nasty it all must have sounded in the very same week the Wurzels, Acker Bilk, and the Bay City Rollers were hogging the U.K. top 10. --Kevin Maidment --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

THE CRIMINALS
Never Been Caught (1997)
Label: Lookout Recs.
Format: CD
Ripped: EAC mp3 (VBR)
HHA Rating: 10
pw = hangoverhard.blogspot.com

The Criminals were an awesome band from Berkeley, CA. It just sucks that they've split and formed different bands. I highly recommend this CD for any fan of The Blatz, Against All Authority, or any other gritty, punk band of the same. All in all, it's a great CD from a great band. Also, check out Burning Flesh and Broken Fingers and Extinct from them as well.
